Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

183231bcb,

@RickiTarr I live in https://transfem.social. The worst part is you have to be careful to avoid getting eaten by a shark. The best part is you can get eaten by a shark.

Requirements to put in a job description to discourage or filter out autistic people:

  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Strong people skills
  • Good culture fit
  • Multitasking
  • A fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Bachelor's degree or better

I see these things and think you don't want my >30 years of programming and machine learning experience, or my problem-solving skills and comprehensive knowledge that had people mistaking me for one of the team's PhDs, or my solutions that have proven patent-worthy. Your loss.

@neurodivergence

183231bcb,

@hosford42 @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence I'm comfortable with ambiguity! If I see ambiguity in math, I ask the author to clarify. If I see ambiguity in anything else, I ask my cat to clarify, and if she refuses to answer then I just assume whoever gave me ambiguous instructions means whatever I want them to have said.

Who is the best Batman villain and why?

183231bcb,

@RickiTarr The only Batman media I care about is Starkid's Holy Musical B@man, so I'll say Sweet Tooth is obviously the best Batman villain.

It's so weird that we are all supposed to be ashamed for burping and farting. I deeply apologize to everyone for keeping my body from literally exploding, so uncouth.

183231bcb,

@RickiTarr I've had students who have been so mistreated by previous teachers/schools that they think they need to apologize for needing to use the bathroom.

Is there a Mastodon client that makes writing threads (sequences of notes) easier? I use Phanpy for desktop and mobile right now.

@dgar People from Trueway can only tell the truth, while people from Falseway can only lie.

Suppose you are traveling and you come to a fork in the road. One path leads to where you want to go, while the other leads to certain doom. At the fork are 16 people, one from each of the 16 logic gate way countries, but you can't tell which person is from which country. You can ask one question to figure out where to go. What do you say?

The Fedipact table showing which servers are blocking Threads is not accurate!

For example, it says that atomicpoet.org is blocking Threads when, in fact, this is not correct. So view this entire site with skepticism.

@fediversenews

183231bcb,

@atomicpoet @tokyo_0 @nm @fediversenews I think the point Tokyo Outsider is making is that your alt-text accuses "fedipact" of misinformation, but the screenshot you show is not of the fedipact website.

The actual Fedipact website is here.

Your OP is a good reason not to trust the site you linked to and to use the official fedipact site instead.

183231bcb,

@atomicpoet @nm @fediversenews @tokyo_0 The table on https://fedipact.online/ does not list your instance. You're talking about the table on an unaffiliated 3rd-party site.

(Which I agree should not be used due to it being unreliable).

This is huge 👏 Mastodon has made it clear that targeted misgendering and deadnaming, as well as promotion of “conversion therapy” content is prohibited. As GLAAD has noted, all social media platforms should do the same.

“Conversion therapy” is also a harmful practice that attempts to change an LGBTQ person’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It’s great to see Mastodon stand up to say that anti-LGBTQ hate has no place on its platform.

What's the status of federation between Lemmy/KBin and Misskey/Sharkey/Firefish/Iceshrimp? I just tried loading several Lemmy and Kbin posts in Sharkey and it doesn't work. I remember having the same issue with Firefish, and I vaguely recall hearing awhile back it was something related to authorized fetch. Have their been any recent developments on that front?

uBlock Origin filter list for sites that contain AI-generated content for uBlock Origin. Useful for scrubbing AI-generated bullshit from Google, DDG, and Bing image search pages.

Edit: I didn't make this! Just seemed useful.

183231bcb,

@faoluin How does this work? Do humans have to add every spam site to the blocklist manually? Is that sustainable given how quickly bots can generate spam? If it's automated or partially automated, how can it accurately determine what sites have generated spam?

Okay fedifriends, please give me advice on buying a game controller.

Some background: I currently play indie games with native Linux support. But I grew up with consoles, and I still think that I'd be more comfortable with a controller for some kinds of games than with a keyboard In particular, I'd like to play precision platformers with a controller. I also think a controller would be good for homebrew made for old consoles.

I have a strong preference for wired peripherals over wireless, and a strong preference for peripherals that don't require their own batteries.

When I sit down to game, I generally want to be able to start playing right away without much set-up. If a game won't launch, I might spend a few minutes adjusting drivers or settings, or I might immediately give up on that game and pick a different game.

Hence, I'd prefer if possible to find a controller that works "out of the box" with a large number of games. I don't want to spend a lot of time configuring button mappings.

So with that in mind, what controller would y'all recommend I buy?

183231bcb, to godot

I want to play a video game adaption of Waiting for Godot made in Godot.

183231bcb, to retrocomputing

I've a question about modern "homebrew" games made for old consoles:

Why is the original Gameboy such a popular target? Itch lists a whopping 6406 games tagged as targeting Gameboy. The second-most popular old console is the NES, with only 1848 games on Itch: less than a third as many as the Gameboy. The Gameboy Advance sits at only 450 games on Itch.

Why? What makes the Gameboy so much better of a platform for indie devs compared to the NES or later consoles?

@antonia To be fair, there is so much variety in that book at least some of hit has to be dangerous, right?

Fun fact: When I was in grad school my algebraic geometry teacher assigned us a homework question that required us to compute the "blow-up" of a "pentagon." He warned us not to Google it to avoid ending up on FBI watch-lists.

183231bcb, to firefox

Fedi, please help me with Firefox and PDFs.

When I click on a link to a PDF, Firefox does one of three things:
a)Display the PDF in-browser, without saving it to a permanent location on my computer.
b)Open a dialogue window asking me where I want to save the PDF.
c)Download and save it in my "Downloads" folder without asking me, and then display it in-browser.

It seems to pick one of these three behaviors at random. I can't discern any pattern.

The thing is, I never ever ever ever ever want it to do (c). If I'm saving a single file on my computer I always want to select the folder manually.

In about:preferences, I scroll down to "Applications," and see I have set PDFs to "always ask." But it doesn't always ask! I've also tried changing the setting to "Open in Firefox", and I get the same result: sometimes it opens in Firefox without saving, sometimes it saves it to my downloads and then opens in Firefox, and sometimes it asks.

What's going on? Why does it switch seemingly at random between these three behaviors regardless of my setting? How do I get it to stop saving things to my Downloads folder without asking?

EDIT: Oh whoops, I forgot to put my system information.
Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1
Firefox Flatpak (currently 126, but it's been happening the same way for a long time).

Can anymany tell me how I'm "supposed" to use end-to-end encryption with XMPP?

As far as I can tell there are three totally different ways to do E2EE:

a)OTR : "[https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0364.html](Not intended to be a current standard), or technical specification, as better (albeit, newer and less well tested) methods of end-to-end encryption exist for XMPP. "

b)OpenPGP: There are at least two different XEPs about it. XEP-0027 is obsolete, while XEP-0373 is "experimental" but hasn't been updated in almost three years.

c)OMEMO: "Experimental" and hasn't been updated in over two years.

Is there a way to do E2EE in XMPP which is neither deprecated nor experimental? What's the "Current stable" way to do it?
