At work, we had a designated quiet space. Today I learned they reverted it back to a conference room though we have many, mostly unused. It was an emergency decompression space. When I spoke up about this loss, I was told, “If someone has a problem with bells & whistles they probably don’t belong in a hospital.” They didn’t realize it was me. “Of course you belong here—you’ve been here forever—we all have to suck it up. We’re all burned out.”

"You can't say that. That's language they use to describe hyperactive dogs."

I just learned in a ND FB group that runny egg sandwiches are a common consumable.

I am fascinated AND my toes are curling to hide from extra sensory information.

I love a hot over easy egg to dip my butter diagonally cut toast into… and isn’t this basically a disassembled sandwich? 😶 My toes, which aren’t even involved, disagree. @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos

At least, I am going to take it as a compliment.

Is there any value in pursuing a potential autism diagnosis as an adult, if a person gets along well enough in life and isn't interested in finding community?

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@smeg Difficult to answer. I've known many people driven simply by a desire to understand 'why.' And I'd be very interested to know how this person defines "gets along well enough?" @actuallyautistic

BZBrainz, (edited )
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@smeg @actuallyautistic Many people who did not know me well would have said I got on well enough—a challenging social barometer—and they would have been wrong. Though I'll admit, if I hadn't needed help, had deficits not been perceived by the doctor, I'd have not pursued diagnosis on my own due to stigma and internalized ableism.

BZBrainz, (edited )
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@smeg @actuallyautistic I simply didn't know I needed more knowledge, support, and tools to help myself than I had ever been allowed before. It was inconceivable to me that there were skills I could learn or accommodations I could ask for that could make some parts of life less challenging.

I'm going to throw this out there and it may sound a bit controversial, but keep in mind I have nearly 20 years's experience as an entrepreneur. Is there ANYONE who works with business owners or business owners who don't just regurgitate the same allistic/neurotypical "marketing advice" that's sold all over the groups and "free offers"? Because I'm not seeing anyone doing anything different from the NTs. @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@KitMuse @actuallyautistic While I may see minor differences, I do not see significant differences in the strategies provided, which has been disappointing.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@KitMuse @actuallyautistic If I need something specifically geared towards me as an author, I may look to my mutuals within the newly created Neurodivergent Publishing Conference (NPC) for recommendations/referrals. The best and most actionable advice I have received has come from my and friends/entrepreneurs, who discuss business with me ad nauseam.

February will NPC’s second conference. There is also a Discord that I just noticed and may join.

My writing is a blend of typing and dictating—typing at my 8-year-old Mac when I need to be lost in music, zoomy thumbs while drowning in crowded spaces, and dictating to my phone when I am too restless to hold still. Chronic pain and competing needs heavily influence how I choose to write.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@wizzwizz4 I've tried many times to make this all fit in one toot. I write linearly—this makes compilation easy since I don't jump around the way I do when I casually speak or think. Writing differences get smoothed out in revisions and become less frequent with practice. At times, I may type/dictate in the same session. @writers

It's so frustrating that I can just about function "normally" for a year max and then everything goes to shit, regardless of what I do, what's been happening, etc.

Is this a common Autistic issue?

@actuallyautistic

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@willaful @alexisbushnell @actuallyautistic making a practice of building in buffer & recovery times has been challenging, but some of the better work that I’ve done to reduce the frequency shutdown and meltdowns. Sometimes I knowingly forgo this practice—and pay the cost, but I do so with informed consent. It is so wonderful to hear that you were teaching this to your kid.

I struggle with spontaneous, two-way personal conversations in person and online with people I don't know well and share strong interests with. I'm more likely to read/watch conversation threads on social media than actively participate unless it touches on something I know well. Often I wait too long processing and feel like I miss my opportunity to contribute. I wish that writing opened up this ability to volley!

As a kid, I used to tell people, “I can’t do things too many times in a row.” I decided 2 days in a row was the most I could do any one pleasant or enjoyable extra thing—play a game? Get my favorite particular DQ treat? Somewhere past that threshold was routine & meltdowns if I could not have the same everyday or if I had too much fun. My current personal work is identifying maladaptive coping strategies for meltdown management or prevention. @actuallyautistic

@actuallyautistic @audhd
Writing does open up my ability to communicate in a unilateral direction. Unilateral isn't quite right; my writing is like a cell with a semipermeable membrane. All are welcome to try to enter to create conversation, but by design, only certain things get through and can be used to create.

Tis the season when communal meals stop being texturally sound for me. Chief offenders being stuffing, mashed potatoes, and creative liberties taking with jello…

@actuallyautistic @audhd

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@servelan @actuallyautistic @audhd I wonder how many dishes like that are at communal tables… served just because they always have been. I call the jello desserts “fancy salad” because a friend, in jest, told me that was what it was called in the Midwest—even though I now know she was teasing me, the language stuck.

What is the best advice you have been given?

“In ten years, you will wish you’d started today.”

For me, it’s a powerful piece of advice emphasizing the importance of taking action and starting on the path toward goals. For me, this is motivating and compassionate. It encourages a sense of urgency and persistence, reminding me that the efforts I put in now—even when when progress feels small or it feels hard—will contribute to my dreams. @audhd @Adhdinos

A 13 yo in my life LOVES the series. Does anyone have any modern readalike suggestions? I know a bunch from around the time that series came out but I don't know what the newer diverse ones are out if there are any?

thank you!!

@Amitha @PeteZ @bookstodon @kidlit my only pause about that series recommendation, one of my top 10 paranormal romance/urban fantasy series, is the main character experiences on page SA. I cannot recall which book, but it’s relatively early in the series. It’s not a young adult series and it’s a good trigger warning to be aware of.
