I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

nerditry:
I make mostly (but not exclusively) B&W images (at least for my fine art work). Is it worth using a dedicated monochrome sensor?

Most digital cameras are designed to record color, using a special mask in front of the sensor called a "Bayer filter". This allows color information to be derived from the raw sensor output, which otherwise would just record brightness. But the Bayer filter can also reduce effective resolution of the image a bit.

So what's the tradeoff?

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze @promovicz @reinoudk "It's not like all B&W is the same"

B&W has always been an art form, not just stripping colour. Folk shooting it know about colour saturation vs colour tones. Just shoot an image of a playground painted in primary colours. Use of filters to accentuate blue skies or other colours was/is a thing.

If you use software that converts colour to b&w, there will be an area with filter choice, that allows the person to convert as if the image was shot with that filter.

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@promovicz @mattblaze @reinoudk Ah, got it. Interesting. There is a preview that shows all the colour channels. I guess there would have to be enough of a demand for camera manufacturers to add that as a preview feature. For now, photographers need to do what they've always done when shooting b&w, understand what they are shooting, though at least now they can see if and where they are clipping.

@NanoRaptor It varies a lot by country and poorer countries, with shorter lifespans, really affect overall numbers. Median age of Monaco, for instance, is 56.2. :)

Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

@gedeonm @Eggfreckles Have you ever seen the old tv series, Combat? There is a two-part episode called "Hills are for Heroes." To me, it was the best representation of warfare and what it's like to be in the trenches.

The series itself is brilliant. There is one smarmy episode per season, but, otherwise, such a good series. Most of the actors in it had actually fought in the war, which maybe contributed to their ability to convey war weariness.

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm @Eggfreckles Oh, highly recommend. It is a really good series. The first 4 seasons were in black and white, then the 5th in colour.

Family sues Disney for $50K after man finds fiancee unconscious at the end of Humunga Kowabunga water slide

Those attendants said that they were not lifeguards and would have to find someone to help. Meanwhile, the woman’s fiancé pulled her from the water while that help was on its way.

“Eventually a lifeguard came and said they couldn’t help or touch Plaintiff either and called an ambulance,” court documents state."

@jwz It would be interesting to see the data and actual percentages. I make my own mutes and CWs and they make me happy. I pass stuff unless I'm in the mood for whatever the topic is I've hidden. As for folk who post porn, I am always grateful when they use a CW because there are things I am very happy not seeing.

So "nothing" has to come with qualifiers.

MAGA world, to distract from Spanky having yet more unsecured piles of classified documents: FBI had orders to shoot and kill Spanky when they were excising their warrant to look for classified documents.

CStamp,

@StillIRise1963 I remembered an interview around your last election campaign. A republican attended a dem town hall. She used words like "horrified" when describing people thinking her child had a right to health care and a good education. She could't believe that everyone talked peacefully, without people screaming and acting angry. She made it clear that she doesn't believe she has a right to good things, everything should be a hard struggle.

That's when I realized how broken many are.
