Secure men can't be emasculated.

Secure men don't need to prove their "manliness".

Secure men aren't afraid of doing things differently or accepting a different role.

Secure men aren't worried that people know they like things up their butts.

Chip_Unicorn,
@Chip_Unicorn@im-in.space avatar

@RickiTarr I am VERY worried that people might discover that I like certain things up my butt. I do not think that I would enjoy having a porcupine up my butt.

Do you want to learn German?

Do you like hyper-powered (and hyper-cute) squirrels?

@evrys is creating a website that combines the two ideas: https://sprachy.com .

It's a lot more fun to read than most language learning websites. I've been using it to restart learning German.

And one of the first sentences you read is: Dein Brötchen ist zum Brennstoff für das ewige Feuer meiner Seele geworden. (Your bread roll has become fuel for the eternal fire that is my soul.) Use that sentence seven times, and it will be yours forever.

if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

if you picked 'other', I'd love to hear what you do in the replies!

Chip_Unicorn,
@Chip_Unicorn@im-in.space avatar

@b0rk I use vim about once a month. It's a good command-line editor.

Comfortable? Not really.

Able to use it? Yes.

Use it or don't use it. There are plenty of great editors, including specialized editors for programming.

devinprater, to accessibility

So today, I joined the Fedora Accessibility Working Group meeting. I felt pretty good for a while. But then we started working on the vision and mission statements in Etherpad. I felt really embarrassed. I had never used this before, and I use Chrome like a lot of other people, and like, NVDA was repeating lines or reading the line above where I was, so much of the five minutes we worked on this was used by me to try to find accessibility information. Luckily for next time, I just tried it in Firefox and it seemed to read a lot better. Still though, I just felt so useless there. But it's just the start of this working group, and I hope more blind people come in and contribute. I just feel like I don't hav much I can contribute to this. I mean if Etherpad is like this, where I have to try multiple browsers on a fast-paced meeting, I don't know. Maybe I'm just too slow. I'll have to get used to Gitlab too. I don't know. After that I kept asking myself what I thought I was doing there. maybe other blind people will be better than I am.

Chip_Unicorn,

@devinprater Hon --

If the Accessibility Working Group is that unprepared to deal with blind people, think about the rest of Fedora.

They desperately need intelligent, blind people to tell them what's not working, and make the system better for everyone.

How can a Texas high school put on a production of “Oklahoma!”? School productions should be based on the state assigned at birth.

Lost Harley the cat this morning.

We've had him spread out on a towel downstairs the past couple of hours, took turns telling stories about him, the usual wake stuff, you know.

Kid's been watching over him while I do the work outside. Mad respect to sextons, it's hard bloody work.

Had to come in and do the grim job of measuring him, now having a quick cup of tea before I go back out and widen his grave a bit. Well, a lot really.

The last attempt that I know of to make an artificial closed biological system was Biosphere 2 in the early 1990s. That was a failure.

Have there been any other attempts to make the kind of system that people would need in order to live on Mars?

Friends. I’m seeking advice for my niece.

She’s being asked to take on new responsibilities at her job and wants to be properly compensated. They’re asking her to do Microsoft Access work. Her role isn’t technical and has nothing to do with it. (She’s also a Black woman who doesn’t want to get walked over because of it.)

Does anyone have any advice or info about what compensation looks like for that kind of work? Thanks in advance!

Chip_Unicorn,
@Chip_Unicorn@im-in.space avatar

@markwyner A quick Google search pointed me to https://salary.com . But that is really for job titles and locations.

It might help her know what her total compensation should be, though.

Wow. I talked myself out of a not-great job.

The recruiter wanted to know if I used SQL and Python in my most recent job. The answer to THAT question is: Very little.

He immediately stopped recruiting for that job.

That's perfectly fine. It was an SDE in Testing job, which I'm not thrilled about. The only thing interesting was the salary, which would have been ludicrous for an SDE in Testing job.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder whether some large fraction of product designers actively hate people with low vision. For example, I just had to take a photo and use zoom and image enhancement to determine that this Keurig pod is decaffeinated.

If I were Empress of Earth, I would allow only vision-impaired people to work as product or UX designers.
