In personal news, my incredibly talented producer Nicole Zaremba & I took home 2 regional Emmys for Serving Up Science last night!

I’m so grateful to the entire WKAR family. Our PBS series is only possible because - from camera work to editing, lighting to sound - they are truly an outstanding team. It’s an honor to work with every one of them to share stories about science.

This thread is a microcosm of everything annoying about reddit.

Guy posts photo of a spider wondering if it is a "brown recluse" gets a bunch of different answers many repeats, several people calling him stupid for not 'just googling it' a few calls to burn down the house and move.

It's not a brown recluse. Even if it were they aren't aggressive. With a recluse it's fine to move them to a remote location with care.

This spider I would simply escort out the back door.

@futurebird When I go to forums to ask questions, I do it to have (hopefully positive) interactions with people who have the same interest that I do in the subject. As we know, lots of other people just use forums as an opportunity to troll people and generally be miserable human beings. Such a waste of a good resource to use it to be abusive or negative. I left Reddit bc I couldn’t take it any more.

Took an after school nap and had the most disturbing dream about this guy in Brooklyn who called me to come help out with his cat colony. Only it was a Cat Colony. There were cat majors and cat minors and we had to go in deep to find the cat queen...

I don’t own chickens. Or any birds for that matter. And even if I did, I probably wouldn’t dress them up as adorable feathered crossing guards.

But sometimes the algorithms for targeted ads on are so very wrong, they’re simply delightful.

Still, I’m very happy they’re not part of .

If not, I want to make it. Let me know if you want to help.

(Lots of stuff on the web about this, but not for academic events, and it's not a perfect fit. Also lots of stuff that's "top 5 tips" or in blog post format - also not what I want. I want something I can hand to an organizer who was planning an in-person only event and have a hope that they might actually turn it into a good hybrid event. Or for someone who wants to plan a hybrid event from the get-go.)

This Davidoff cigar ad in the window on Madison ave is very disturbing. It also says “Every cigar we make passes through 300 hands, sorry 301” (yuck?) the ads are all about the “timeless” and exotic labor— and then it looks like some horrible banker is gonna cut off this elderly person’s fingers to smoke them— I’m getting baaaad subtext from this. Am I crazy?

Granted all of my great grandparents farmed tobacco so I feel some kind of way about it.

    Perhaps at some point I'll write a thread on my deep concerns about our reliance on Google Scholar.

    For now, though, why on earth does Google Scholar not let you sort your search results?

    You have basically one choice: to see them in "relevance" order—and we're not even told the secret formula used to determine relevance.

    You can also sort by date—for papers from the past year only.

    It's really crazy that a mature tool supposedly designed to serve the community would be severely limited.

    @ct_bergstrom Most things online are poorly designed. We’ve just gotten so used to poorly designed websites that only really poorly designed sites stand out to us. The outrage should be directed more broadly. Nearly everything online is crap.
