Air pollution in New York City today is at dangerous levels due to the fires in Canada. I went on my usual early evening walk, & the view was alarming. Very low visibility, & a pronounced smell of smoke.

The first picture is the view of the George Washington Bridge around 6pm the other day. The second picture is how it looked today.

There was a story in Gothamist yesterday about this: https://gothamist.com/news/smoke-from-wildfires-in-canada-continues-to-afflict-nycs-air-quality

The same view as the first picture, but now you can just barely see the bridge (which is about a mile away) because thick gray smoke is covering everything in a foggy blanket.

    The skies over NYC are dull yellow, the air is yellow and it smells like a campfire.

    It's cold, an unnatural chill in the air. I think this is due to a wildfire in Canada... but it feels so...

    ...so climate change
    It's creepy.

    Were this to persist, the garden on our roof would die.

    If the mastodon ~community wants to be more welcoming to more people, someone is going to have to do bystander training for dealing with people like this dude. (And the other guys who told her to just block.) He responded to a Black woman’s post about it feeling super white here and went on for like seven posts telling her how to speak and how he was helping her be better.

    By not making this guy’s replies visible to most people bc of federation weirdness, the software plays a role, too.

    @adamgreenfield @kissane @paulkruczynski @trochee Seems to me like the moderation systems here are designed to combat overt hostility, but completely inadequate for tackling ingrained prejudice from oblivious well-meaning racist/misogynist/homophobic fools. And the latter far, far outweigh the former. But to have a functioning system, both problems need to be tackled.

    Via the Writer’s Guild East: Netflix is demanding shareholders approve over $166 million in retroactive executive pay for 2022.

    By contrast, the writers strike ends if Netflix agreed to a contract that would cost the streamer an estimated $68 million a year.

    This evening’s cocktail: The Negroni Spagliato Spritz

    1 oz Campari
    1 oz sweet red vermouth
    4 oz Prosecco (or in this case cremante - whatever bubbly you have on hand)
    Dash Angostura orange bitters
    Orange peel garnish (I don’t have this tonight)

    Very refreshing, with the delicious bitter profile of a classic Negroni, but much lower alcohol content (Prosecco instead of gin), so one can guzzle a few. I think this might be my summer cocktail of 2023.

    @mcmullin @composers @contemporarymusic It’s so useful to have a description of your work ready to go when asked. In my band N to The Power we argued about this for a year, and I finally settled on

    “We’re a ten-piece experimental band from Harlem that sound like a cross between Fela Kuti and Steve Reich. I play mostly electric cello and Tony plays bass clarinet, but we are all multi-instrumentalists.”

    It’s so reductive, but effective!

    Going over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn earlier this evening on the Q train. The light was so beautiful. I don't often post video here, I think it takes up so much space on the server etc but what if an asteroid lands on NYC tonight wouldn't it be a shame that nobody got to see this?

    Looking down the row of seats on the Q train. Orange seats and a lot of chrome. Sunlight is flashing and reflecting off of every surface. The car is fairly empty, and the two closest people are preoccupied. We can see the Manhattan bridge flashing by outside the windows.

    A good interview with David Simon about the writer's strike.

    I have the perception that people who don't work in the media business sometimes think that people who do are overpaid & not necessarily the most deserving of better working conditions. But truthfully it's just a few people at the very top who get paid well, like in any other field.

    I've been a member of IATSE Local 700 Editors Guild since 1985 & I gotta say: unions matter!
