Sounds depressingly similar to the misogynistic Met police tactics at the Sarah Everard vigil:

https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/5/17/the-misogyny-of-the-anti-protest

> Our reaction to the students who are protesting what they see as genocide in real time speaks volumes about who we are.

I love Ursula LeGuin to bits (in three languages) - the shelf is (part of the) proof. But I never got the excitement about "The Ones Who Walks Away from Omelas".

I know what the story, the metaphor tries to say. But all that I see is how this is a story about walking away. Not stay and change: be the change, start the change, convince the others that things need to be better. But a story about keeping one's conscience clean and walking away. And the injustice left behind continues.

Fragarach,
@Fragarach@mas.to avatar

@vicgrinberg
To me, that story was about, if you can see the injustice in a system, and you feel powerless to change it, you can choose not to participate.
To me, that was the message, that by ignoring an injustice, one becomes complicit in its execution.
I'm quite sure you know all that, but it spoke to me.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

As Fishi Rishi said, it's an historic day. It'll be the subject of essays by future schoolchildren where the Conservative Party removed any doubt that they were xenophobic hate-mongers, trying to appeal for votes to the most bigoted, intolerant and ill-informed members of society.

The greedy data centers are coming

"That tension has been on full display in Frederick County over the fate of 20,000 acres of picturesque farmland, rolling hills and a beloved mountain park. The ensuing debate, which pitted grassroots community organizations against powerful economic interests, offered a preview for how the data center dilemma might unfold across suburban Maryland in the coming years."

Destroying communities for pure greed and AI grifting.

I have no time for the SelfServatives, Starmer has broken every promise he made. The LibDems, though I don't despise them as much, aren't a credible threat - although I plan to vote for Hannah Kitching for Sheffield Mayor.
I'm going to vote Green next time. Not because they have any chance of winning with a not fit for purpose FPTP electoral system, but just in case any of my few surviving remote descendants look back and think "That fucker voted to keep destroying the planet".

Not going to presume to approve or otherwise comment on your personal choice, but I feel it's long overdue that our electoral system should represent the electorate, rather than the sponsors and donors of those being elected. FPTP just doesn't cut it.

Three good things, all on one day,

  1. Bought myself a new e-bike. 50% off because of paintwork damage. Like I could have done myself going home. An Electra Vale Go! if anyone cares. Turns out it's a Dutch bike. A bike made by Cloggies, where 70% of journeys < 5 miles are made by bicycle. Who'd have thought they could make an e-bike that's exactly what I want? Weird!

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

Fragarach,
@Fragarach@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr @hybridhavoc
A long time ago, I said to my wife (of 42 years) about presents for birthdays et cetera, "Look, if you want me to get you something, don't drop hints, I won't pick up on them. Just ask."
Took a while, it seems to be a learned behaviour, but it works fine. She doesn't get ticked off by not getting what she thought she was being obvious about, and we don't have the "why didn't you just say" conversation again.

Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?
