A few people are making more money, most people aren't. With wages basically stagnant and housing costs continuing to rise, really not surprising about the growing number of unhoused people.

And yet somehow, it will be spun that those of us that fall through the cracks are at fault and not the two issues I just mentioned.

@Adam_Cadmon1 had a convo with an acquaintance who has worked with and for religious orgs supporting the unhoused for a decade. He said he believes the root cause of homelessness is the decline in marriage and children in single parent households. I said, don’t you think poverty is the root cause? High housing costs and wages that haven’t kept pace? Inequity? You know, like data from the past few years clearly shows?

Nope. It’s decline of marriage.

Ugh.

@KatM @Adam_Cadmon1 Yes! This! Rosa DeLauro from CT’s 3rd district has been pushing for the child tax credit for years and even this modest payment during 2021 dropped the child poverty rate significantly (and of course it climbed right back up when Congress let the credit lapse). For once we have a fairly simple solution to a complex problem. Just give people more money->see significant positive societal change.

My friends brother just send her a video he took of a manatee* in Rhode Island. I know the ocean is unprecedentedly warm but wow!

*while they can occur up the east coast, normal range is Florida.

The snow plow just went past. It’s not snowing. We’ve had over 2.5in rain in last ten hours + strong winds. School canceled and power outages around town. So many branches down, using snow plow to clear roads. Our second story windows under 6 ft eaves rain covered. Up much of the night as branches hit the roof in continual thuds. It’s 60 °F on December 18,2023 in Connecticut, US.

It’s 75 degrees F here on October 27. Madness. Usually we have at least brief snow flurries by this time. Even the oaks have gone all russetty golden.

Top 2 shelves of the orchidarium, half of these with spikes. A 4 hour project to soak all and do maintenance, plus updating the spreadsheet. Planning to loan the bloomers out for the holidays, then gather them in again once they stop flowering (and before someone accidentally kills them.) Local fedi friends who want to host one, let me know.

Anyone else with a hobby they took up during the pandemic that has become a big part of their life?

This semester we placed four law students at state agencies, one in-house and one at an NGO for around 15 hrs/week. All had flexible hybrid but largely remote schedules. While they liked the flexibility, they found it really hard as the new person to make connections and build relationships. Has led to interesting discussions about what they might expect entering the job market.

CIRCA, where I work, is a university institute that also helps towns in CT assess their climate vulnerabilities and access funding for climate resilience. Other nonprofits like the HVA in this story are helping to close the gaps between recognizing the need and paying for actions to address it. But, we need more: more expertise, capacity, and funding to adapt. A story repeated throughout the world right now.

Oh.

Maybe the weird joint pain in my fingers (now toes and knees) is Lyme disease, not just an over aggressive weeding injury.

And I can get an appointment w/ my dr. on…July 16.

Cool cool cool. That’s my weekend shot figuring out how to deal with this.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

Good news: not Lyme!

Bad news: likely an incurable autoimmune disease. Joy!

@inquiline Runs in the family. Better treatments these days luckily. And kudos to the PA who took me seriously and ran every screen known to science. Even with good health insurance having access to medical care where you are acknowledged and listened to makes all the difference.
