Looking at photos from hiking in the Colorado, US a few summers ago. January is a real challenge; nice to dream about a flower filled meadow.

Omg, omg, omg! I have a makers area!!!

Picked up my beautiful new table this evening and set it up to be my work desk and sewing area. How exciting!

@makershour @sewing

The table with a computer screen, keyboard mouse, tissues, an old Singer sewing machine, a small wicker sewing basket and a large cheese plant on it.

@alexisbushnell @makershour @sewing really nice table and set up!

Fisher had to go to the vet today and found it traumatic so middle child set him up with a blanket and bird TV. He’s been avidly watching for two hours! 🤦‍♀️

Well, I did get the slides done, but missed the fellowship of . It was satisfying though, to read through a project report from a few years ago and realize even when I first started at the institute and didn’t think I knew very much, my work was right on, and subsequent legislative policy flowed from those recommendations (or at least we were all on the same page, had the same ideas, etc.)

I had an "ah ha" moment when thinking about the angry responses to yesterday's blog post.

(This one, if you missed it.) https://terikanefield.com/section-3-and-the-spirit-of-liberty/

First, I'll share a positive response. (Screenshot #1)

(Screenshot #2 was typical of the angry responses.)

About 5 years ago, I took the tact of responding to "there are never any consequences" by listing the consequences.

I figured, you know, facts. For example, see #3

@Teri_Kanefield I agree with you. Democracy is hard. At a combined meeting of my small town’s planning and zoning commission, town council, and other boards to discuss options for increasing affordable housing, several said “We need to make them build what we want” and got mad when I said that’s not how our legal authority works. It’s a university town & developers want to build high return apartments for students. We can make that hard, and incentivize AH, that’s all.

We have an unusual house, built in the 1950’s from plans in Better Homes and Garden. The original home, Four Bedrooms on a Budget is in Missouri, in the middle of the US, very different climatically and geologically than northeastern Connecticut. The stairs down are right in the middle of the floor, with a wooden fence around them, that Fish couldn’t get any purchase on as a kitten, so I wrapped them with rope, inadvertently turning the living room into a giant cat gym.

How many of you just have a random box sitting in the middle of your home, because one of your pets decided it was the best place they've ever sat?

@RickiTarr Always. Several, including box hiking boots came in three years ago AND a satellite egg carton for the toys and treats in paws reach.

For @futurebird an ant plant. The green house has a big collection of ant plants, but sadly, no ants! The research specimen collection however does have a fantastic collection of army ants and their associated guests.

Just got an email from a local greenhouse that fuel costs are too high so they are giving away all their remaining houseplants this weekend and shutting down for two months.

Do I need more plants? Do I??

@shekinahcancook and Orchid World is doing well! I started rescuing orchids at the beginning of the pandemic and at least for the Phalaenopsis, have figured out a good regimen to keep them healthy and blooming.

A few people are making more money, most people aren't. With wages basically stagnant and housing costs continuing to rise, really not surprising about the growing number of unhoused people.

And yet somehow, it will be spun that those of us that fall through the cracks are at fault and not the two issues I just mentioned.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1 had a convo with an acquaintance who has worked with and for religious orgs supporting the unhoused for a decade. He said he believes the root cause of homelessness is the decline in marriage and children in single parent households. I said, don’t you think poverty is the root cause? High housing costs and wages that haven’t kept pace? Inequity? You know, like data from the past few years clearly shows?

Nope. It’s decline of marriage.

Ugh.

IcooIey,
@IcooIey@mastodon.green avatar

@KatM @Adam_Cadmon1 Yes! This! Rosa DeLauro from CT’s 3rd district has been pushing for the child tax credit for years and even this modest payment during 2021 dropped the child poverty rate significantly (and of course it climbed right back up when Congress let the credit lapse). For once we have a fairly simple solution to a complex problem. Just give people more money->see significant positive societal change.

The snow plow just went past. It’s not snowing. We’ve had over 2.5in rain in last ten hours + strong winds. School canceled and power outages around town. So many branches down, using snow plow to clear roads. Our second story windows under 6 ft eaves rain covered. Up much of the night as branches hit the roof in continual thuds. It’s 60 °F on December 18,2023 in Connecticut, US.

I'm usually not such a big fan of Christmas time and I have been trying to mostly ignore big holidays since 3 years.

But, for some reason, this year I'm into it. I decorated early AND I got myself a Christmas gift AND I wrapped it! :awesome:🎁✨

There will be no surprise
for me when I unwrap it but:

Can YOU guess what it is? 👀
