Let's put people back in control of their technology. The Fediverse is a good start. Also wondering aloud where we are taking this planet.

just announced their next social media venture: .

Perspectives is a tab that will showcase social media posts in their search results. This will give -- you guessed it -- "perspectives" on current events and other matters as well.

While Google is positioning this generating results from all social media, this also has massive implications for the .

I've been saying for a long time that if we Fediverse developers didn't nail search soon, Google will eat our lunch.

Well, it looks like they've just set down at a table and are studying the menu right now -- because I completely expect that the Fediverse will be present on that Perspective tabs, especially since the Fediverse is now generating 1 billion+ posts each month.

What is the next logical step for Google?

If I were putting on my Google product development hat, I'd push for full text search with near-instant results. This is very easy for Google to do. Their engineers could probably build it fast.

Meanwhile, the Fediverse is practically giving away Fediverse search to Google -- Google is what most people use to find posts on the Fediverse right now.

Are we just going to allow Google to extend their search monopoly into the Fediverse, and without a fight too?

@chris @jan @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews There is some early-stage talk in the W3C SWICG to add "rights expressions" to posts. So you could say "no indexing" or "use as you wish under CC-By..." with single-post granularity (and suitably UI defaults).

(I don't think that anybody scans robots.txt at the rate necessary to make this viable for posts)

One thing all these platform gyrations have proved to me is that social media is overrated. This whole idea of following people and not ideas or topics is often vapid and always was. We just went along with this "activity stream" model because we were told it was useful and cool. But it's also pretty toxic when not just dull. But we've all been encouraged to become addicted to it. .

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@shoq IMHO there are different use cases that we are all just used to put under the same umbrella "social media" and the same software tools.

Why should the tools be the same for wanting to hear what the extended family is up to, and breaking news from Ukraine?

I had a disappointing conversation with a great maintainer last week that want's UX help and is doing EVERYTHING right but still couldn't attract someone.

This is what all of us folk are seeking! A maintainer that 'gets it' and wants our help. The problem? Everyone he interviewed wanted to do a huge rethink of the design, and when it became clear it would be a lot of work, just faded away.

It's not just 'those programmers', it's us too, UXers need to leave ego behind

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@scottjenson Yep, would require a commitment to sustained effort over a longer term otherwise it just leaves chaos in its wake.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@scottjenson Ah, good model!

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@scottjenson Did they all want to do the same rethink, or all different ones? Because if the first, that should ring some alarms ...

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@scottjenson I agree, whoever owns the UX has to own it in the same way the lead developer owns the software architecture. Lots of people can help on a short term basis, but only at the margins and subject to the overall vision and approval of who owns the overall subject.

For code, that might be relatively localized bug fixes; the UX equivalent might be relatively localized CSS or image changes, maybe? But not anything on the level of a major refactor in code or UX. I think :-)

Did a debrief between us organizers @Dangerangel @Identitywoman and me. By general agreement, we think FediForum was a great success! Lots of good people, being passionate and engaged across the various sessions, far more important topics than could conceivably be discussed -- some people continued discussing even after the event ended -- and lots of follow-up. Some resulted in very specific steps that will move the Fediverse forward.

We will do this again! Stay tuned and in touch!!

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@strypey @Dangerangel @Identitywoman don’t forget decent social, which also happened earlier this year online. Imho several events with different focus is a good idea, there’s so much to talk about, learn, and connections to be made.

Public townsquare? Permanent record? Full transparency? Bluesky?

Somebody put all of 's posts so far in one single database.

Note AFAIK everything that happens on Bluesky is public, and can never be deleted. So this is not a bug, this is a feature, according to their architecture.

@evan had the idea of a “ network” earlier today. Pondering this, I think this is a really excellent idea. It brings under one umbrella a whole bunch of other ideas how to move the fediverse forward, and simplifies those a lot. I think we should investigate this …

What about we do a session tomorrow on this? Maybe @davidslifka would join us, who recently talked to some potential funders for things like that I think.

What a totally fascinating graph! Spot the difference!

Seems to me there is little immunity over time, but certainly a great reduction of symptoms! Except when Omicron hit.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jimfenton part of it, certainly, but the magnitude difference is significant. I do assume that all the non mild cases are being counted.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jimfenton I don't really want to buy anything, I just want to know what the people with the money think about the likelihood of default.

Join us if you like. In the right room :-)

I've finally gone over. Every time these days somebody technical suggests "we could add cool feature X or do something with Y protocol", my first gut reaction, without even thinking about it, is "will this provide the value to the user that the user is wanting and expecting?"

And every single time, the technical proposal needs to be at least packaged very differently than proposed to actually make a difference to the user.

I've become annoying to the geeks I notice. Hopefully less so to users.

Open source software is great! You can file bugs and the community works on them and they get fixed!!

Like today, my issue against cloud-init was fixed. Yea!

A mere 8 and a half years after I filed it.

I really don't like anybody putting people into stereotypical categories and then dismissing them because they are in some stereotypical category.

And I don't care what the category is. Every individual has their own story that is worth acknowledging.

That may be a completely lost cause on all parts of the human spectrum.

So a search warrant is now sufficient court approval to send some network packets as a result of which code on somebody else’s computer self destructs? In this case, all for a good cause, but what am I missing? Doesn’t sound like a “search” to me … https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/05/how-the-fbi-pwned-turla-a-kremlin-jewel-and-one-of-worlds-most-skilled-apts/

Only happens when running Mastodon inside a Linux container with recent kernels, which is great for development, but obscure enough I'd be surprised somebody fixed that.
