My latest thoughts on the open social web (a term that includes the fediverse but also e.g. BlueSky/AT), and how to maximize its odds of success.

TLDR: Serious marketing, funding for lots of projects, and a full-featured Twitter competitor yesterday!

@davidslifka @spreadmastodon E.g. some recent steps in the right direction: 1) the emerging developer network -- tons of discussions already 2) the reactivation of regular SWICG meetings towards updated standardization 3) I think FediForum also has been playing a useful role as a convener and community builder, and 4) IFTAS.

Next on my wish list: 5) we need some kind of "Fediverse marketers network" to align messaging and run fewer, more broadly supported campaigns involving several projects.

@davidslifka @spreadmastodon Just like described for the women's liberation movement, the current largely structureless nature of the fediverse is very good for some things -- like anybody can get involved -- but not so good for other things -- like accountability, or political/societal impact. Some parallels (like "who appointed you spokesperson??") match 100%.

IMHO we need to build fediverse institutions that help without hindering the good we already have. A tall order, but doable IMHO.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@davidslifka @spreadmastodon I came across this fascinating piece on structural problems of the women’s liberation movement from the early 1970s these past few days. Many of its insights are directly applicable to the fediverse. I wonder whether we will apply its lessons. https://www.jofreeman.com/joreen/tyranny.htm

Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the . 👀

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mastodonmigration @tchambers @rysiek Anybody up for a "Fediverse Marketing Network"? (Or use a less perhaps controversial term ... but it would bring people together who care about where potential new users are, what their mindset is, how to reach them, how to sign them up, in a way that reaches the right goals)

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@rysiek @mastodonmigration @tchambers It could be focused on that. But I think there are larger issues at play, such as 1) what's the "brand" that the user is told to go to get onboarded 2) what does this brand represent compared to other brands present in the mind of the user? 3) How have they heard about this brand, through which communication channels? 4) Who owns it and whose agenda is being implemented here? .. if those are solved for onboarding, a lot of other issues are solved, too.

  1. Leak a few things about your 'upcoming' product.

  2. Wait a few years and watch competitors rush to market with undercooked MVPs to beat you.

  3. Introduce a much more polished product and dominate the market.

The has a business model problem. (Use the term "business" loosely if you like.)

Today's exhibit: Guppe groups is a loss-making project, donations are insufficient, and the developers will need to shut it down if that doesn't change asap. Given all the things they tried already, that seems unlikely.

Lots of projects will end up like this if we don't solve this.

One thing all these platform gyrations have proved to me is that social media is overrated. This whole idea of following people and not ideas or topics is often vapid and always was. We just went along with this "activity stream" model because we were told it was useful and cool. But it's also pretty toxic when not just dull. But we've all been encouraged to become addicted to it. .

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@shoq IMHO there are different use cases that we are all just used to put under the same umbrella "social media" and the same software tools.

Why should the tools be the same for wanting to hear what the extended family is up to, and breaking news from Ukraine?

atomicpoet, to fediverse

just announced their next social media venture: .

Perspectives is a tab that will showcase social media posts in their search results. This will give -- you guessed it -- "perspectives" on current events and other matters as well.

While Google is positioning this generating results from all social media, this also has massive implications for the .

I've been saying for a long time that if we Fediverse developers didn't nail search soon, Google will eat our lunch.

Well, it looks like they've just set down at a table and are studying the menu right now -- because I completely expect that the Fediverse will be present on that Perspective tabs, especially since the Fediverse is now generating 1 billion+ posts each month.

What is the next logical step for Google?

If I were putting on my Google product development hat, I'd push for full text search with near-instant results. This is very easy for Google to do. Their engineers could probably build it fast.

Meanwhile, the Fediverse is practically giving away Fediverse search to Google -- Google is what most people use to find posts on the Fediverse right now.

Are we just going to allow Google to extend their search monopoly into the Fediverse, and without a fight too?

@J12t@social.coop avatar

@chris @jan @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews There is some early-stage talk in the W3C SWICG to add "rights expressions" to posts. So you could say "no indexing" or "use as you wish under CC-By..." with single-post granularity (and suitably UI defaults).

(I don't think that anybody scans robots.txt at the rate necessary to make this viable for posts)

Somebody put all of 's posts so far in one single database.

Did a debrief between us organizers @Dangerangel @Identitywoman and me. By general agreement, we think FediForum was a great success! Lots of good people, being passionate and engaged across the various sessions, far more important topics than could conceivably be discussed -- some people continued discussing even after the event ended -- and lots of follow-up. Some resulted in very specific steps that will move the Fediverse forward.

We will do this again! Stay tuned and in touch!!

@strypey @Dangerangel @Identitywoman don’t forget decent social, which also happened earlier this year online. Imho several events with different focus is a good idea, there’s so much to talk about, learn, and connections to be made.

@evan had the idea of a “ network” earlier today. Pondering this, I think this is a really excellent idea. It brings under one umbrella a whole bunch of other ideas how to move the fediverse forward, and simplifies those a lot. I think we should investigate this …

What about we do a session tomorrow on this? Maybe @davidslifka would join us, who recently talked to some potential funders for things like that I think.

I've finally gone over. Every time these days somebody technical suggests "we could add cool feature X or do something with Y protocol", my first gut reaction, without even thinking about it, is "will this provide the value to the user that the user is wanting and expecting?"

And every single time, the technical proposal needs to be at least packaged very differently than proposed to actually make a difference to the user.

I've become annoying to the geeks I notice. Hopefully less so to users.
