I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.

I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozilla’s CEO needs that money.

If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.

Thanks to helpful replies, I have redirected my Mozilla Foundation donations to @servo and @openwebdocs.

Servo is the next-gen browser engine with significant contributions merged into Firefox. It started as a R&D project at Mozilla, but its developers were part of the Mozilla layoff. Its work continues under the Linux Foundation.

https://crowdfunding.lfx.linuxfoundation.org/projects/e98e012f-479e-45d0-8781-4d7f616baa9d

Open Web Docs is the non-profit that took over primary MDN contribution after the Mozilla layoff.

If you enjoy Thunderbird and want to redirect your Mozilla Foundation donations more purposefully, here is Thunderbird’s fund:

(Thunderbird is not relevant to me, as I have used webmail exclusively for nearly a decade. I am sharing for those who stumble upon this thread since it was mentioned repeatedly in replies.)

The organization responsible for .se domains (Internetstiftelsen/The Internet Foundation) hosts an incredible conference on technology and society every year.

This year’s program includes keynotes from @pluralistic and Ann Reardon (debunker of “fake news of the baking world”). Hopefully Cory makes a Mastodon pitch since it’s tragically absent from the agenda.

Just bought my ticket!

There are not enough good “monkey see, monkey do” examples for JSON-LD, even in the spec.

I still don’t ever feel like I’m doing something correctly with 100% certainty and I’ve been designing web APIs in other formats for 15 years.

15 years ago, I married this incredible man. We vowed to support each other’s happiness, not “till death do us part.” We promised to be truthful on if we were better together than apart. We’ve grown so much as individuals. We just as reasonably could have grown in separate ways. We’re still together and deeply in love. He’s the best fieldtrip buddy I could ask for.

Before responding to someone online:

• ask yourself what emotions you feel and examine if they are valid

• ask yourself what outcome you desire and examine if your response is likely to achieve that outcome

• ask yourself if you would consider the response truthful, kind, necessary, and helpful if roles were reversed and you received what you wrote

• ask yourself if you would be ok with your response being the last thing you ever posted online

Please post your videos to places other than YouTube.

YouTube intentionally breaks iOS’s picture-in-picture feature, which frustrates me frequently.

Recent situations:

• I want to just listen to a conference talk while walking. Nope, gotta keep the phone unlocked.

• I am doing a repair and need to compare the video to what's in another app. Nope, YouTube shares the screen with no one. Diva.

Jeremiah, to terraform
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

Terraform remains open-source-enough for me—and there is no viable alternative today—but I am still disappointed in HashiCorp adopting Business Source License as a customer, open source contributor, and shareholder.

I know someone will come at me for saying there is no viable alternative, so preemptively: There is no declarative alternative that’s extensively & officially supported by infrastructure providers, “more” open source, not problematically financed.

Climate change is pushing ticks carrying the deadly CCHF virus to move through Europe. The mortality rate is ~30% within 2 weeks. There is no widely-available vaccine.

I remember seeing billboards my first summer in Sverige saying to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), another virus I had never heard about in the US.

Firefox v120 brings a preview of good privacy features pioneered elsewhere probably because they were too high risk for it do first.

Firefox users in Deutschland can soon enjoy

  1. Cookie Banner Blocker by default in private windows to auto-refuse cookies and dismiss annoying cookie banners for supported sites

  2. URL Tracking Protection by default in private windows to remove non-essential URL query parameters often used to track people across the web

Sverige should adopt the euro and most of its citizens now agree.

We could stop dealing with conversions for tax reporting and paying foreign transaction fees when doing business in the EU. SEK experiences greater value loss and longer recovery times compared to the euro against reserve currencies. Whatever hypothetical benefit of a weak currency to exports has never been realized by workers. Enough already!

This update from SEB (major commercial Swedish bank) is wild.

• During September, inflation was still too high and Swedish krona reached a new record low
• “the great interest rate experiment is coming to an end and the worst interest rate storm over”
• interest rates will never return to the prior levels
• it does not know whether to trust guidance from Riksbanken (central bank) because its predictions 18 months ago were totally wrong

Intercom, the company that pioneered the customer support chat bubble in the lower right corner, decided to stop supporting LGBTQ+ people externally by removing public support of Pride Month and employees internally by killing its employee resource group.

“What’s really tough now is that Pride has got wrapped up, unfortunately, within some circles in kind of more divisive and political issues,” CEO Eoghan McCabe said.

Shame on him.

I need Mastodon and Kubernetes help:

I am trying to deploy Mastodon to a GCP GKE Autopilot cluster. The Helm chart is failing due to container sysctl calls somewhere getting blocked because GKE does not allow them.

I don't know where to look to investigate where these calls are being made to see if I might avoid them from being made. Any ideas?

Getting 42 US states to agree on anything these days is quite difficult, so a consensus to file a lawsuit accusing Meta of having misled the public about the substantial dangers of its products and knowingly contributed to a youth mental health crisis through the addictive nature of their social media platforms is quite something.
