Who thinks that when the economy seriously goes upside down and their assets are worth less than their debts on the assets(which it will soon enough due to Energy cost of Energy and no good oil replacement), people are just going to watch as the bank takes their homes from them?

Hmmm? Would you just watch yourself get put on the street?

There's a reason it's called the "thin blue line." It's fucking thin.

Perhaps we should start calling all us proles the

We already have digital feudalism. That is, the owners of large digital spaces don't do any work themselves, but sit back and let others do the work for them. They don't make things; they steal or buy ideas from others. They don't innovate; they worsen existing services.

They are no better than traditional landlords, except that the rent you pay is most often in the form of subscription fees or subjection to advertisement.

Serfdom is already here.

I’m beginning to get the distinct impression that leftists who care about the environment enough to do actually get off their ass and do something about it are a miniscule minority.

Most seem more interested in virtue signaling their love for humanity while we fill our nest so full of shit our children drown in a boiling vat of it.

And honestly, I think the IDPOL cancel culture just has a lot of people too scared to speak out for fear of being labeled an eco-fascist.

It’s crazy.

There won’t be any people to love in a decade or two if we don’t get our environmental shit together. And it is going to hit the marginalized groups the hardest, first.

We don’t have the luxury of choosing our battles anymore people. We ALL have to be #Class warriors. We ALL have to be #SocialJustice Warriors. And, we ALL have to be #EnvironmentalWarriors

MobiusBlack,
@MobiusBlack@kolektiva.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer I don't think that's fair. I probably do care about the environment. But for about 3 years now I have spent most my professional life operating against the US militia movement, which is it's own unique threat. I don't have the expertise -nor the bandwidth , quite frankly- to do anything environmentalish. The world I live in is pretty dark and I can barely maintain myself as is, I can't be adding more darkness. I'm not the only one that has made such a choice, there are people who are doing good work to fight bigotry, or educate children, or provide medical services to the impoverished, and just can't do much about the environment, not because they don't care, but because they just can't. You're an environmental lawyer so you are especially sensitive to the lack of action, and I get that (I often have to remind myself that not everyone who doesn't work against right wing DVEs are cowards although it feels that way) but you should try to separate the ones who do good in the world on by working on other issues from the ones that don't do anything good at all.

sashin,
@sashin@mastodon.online avatar

@LeftistLawyer @MobiusBlack I don't know how, but somehow we need to work together, to co-ordinate better, so that we can realise all our collective goals from ending poverty and racism to preserving a habitable environment.

    @LeftistLawyer There's also the fact that the USA already has negative population growth. Only thing that keeps the population going up is immigrants.

    People need to understand the importance of community, I think. Even if you deny that children affect everyone, and having or not having them has a big effect on everyone around you, having kids can't just be an individual decision, for a very important reason...

    @LeftistLawyer Modern economics is literally making the justification for slavery and poverty at the expense of human capital for the few who own property and have power.
    A good example of that was the recent (yesterday) article the NY Times did on the sugar fields of India and how Coke & Pepsi, as well as the Indian government, prove this theory:

    @LeftistLawyer I agree it's all theater and Capitalist propaganda, but I'd hardly lay the blame with Hollywood and Madison Ave. They are symptoms, not the root cause. The real culprit is the 1% (& monopolists) doing everything they can to preserve their business models. The well being of humans and the planet be damned.

    It's getting worse because recent changes allowing unlimited money in politics and weakened anti-trust laws are eliminating any checks or balances on their power.

    aburtch,
    @aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

    @LeftistLawyer I would argue that Hollywood and Madison Ave simply take the money the monopolists give them since their businesses also run on profit motive.

    Can someone please explain why, on a planet with 5 billion too many people and , declining birthrates are a problem?

    @LeftistLawyer
    declining birthrates = fewer slaves

    dan613,
    @dan613@ottawa.place avatar

    @LeftistLawyer The problem is the declining population. A stable population wouldn't be a problem. And that problem is an oversized senior population with not enough workers to support them. Japan is the poster child for this, and is trying to automate their way out of insufficient senior care workers. A declining tax base also puts more stress on the declining number of working age people.

    The solution for many countries is to get immigrants from countries with plenty of young families.

    kolya,
    @kolya@social.cologne avatar

    @LeftistLawyer You are comparing 5 billion globally to locally declining birth rates. But the global birth rates are still rising and according to the latest stats will continue to do so much longer than anticipated, ie 10 billion won't be the limit we thought it'd be.

    fmhilton,
    @fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @kolya @LeftistLawyer Which is why the rise of the anti-abortionists, christian nationalism is also all tied into this conversation of how many people need to have babies. American women are the main target because they're the most visible of 'women's lib' and thus the easiest one to attack with laws that keep their wombs and lives in cages. Also no divorce allowed, etc. All are on the agenda. Women are chattel.

    @nosmaharba @LeftistLawyer I've been reading a history of Jamaica. After the slave trade was abolished, but before slavery was abolished, it was no longer cheaper to import new slaves to replace the ones that died, so at least some slave owners improved conditions to the point where their slaves were no longer dying off faster than they could breed.

    @LeftistLawyer A couple of weeks ago, I saw a short clip from an interview with Prof. Tad Patzek, in which he was asked how many people the planet could support in perpetuity if they were living at western developed nation levels of consumption. He whittled the number down as he added in all of the things we do to degrade the planet. His reply was that it was something between 500k and 1.5M, the implication being that we had better change our ways STAT.
