What I wanted from AI: hundreds of robot servants to automate away all my stupid, repetitive tasks, leaving me free to pursue the life of the mind.

What I expected from AI: self-driving cars maybe, at some point.

What I got from AI: a wrong-answer machine which steals money from me and is powered by burning the rainforest.

Very good read. "That’s what TSMC is really competing with at its Arizona fabs. It’s having to pay a multiple of what it would pay in Taiwan, for workers who are less elite and less passionately committed to the company. This is not an advantage of Taiwanese management or Taiwanese culture — it’s a function of the fact that Taiwan is a less wealthy country than America, and one that has chosen to throw many of its best people into a single national champion company." https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/whos-afraid-of-east-asian-management

Red Lobster was killed by private equity, not Endless Shrimp
A decade ago, a hedge fund had an improbable viral comedy hit: a 294-page slide deck explaining why Olive Garden was going out of business,
blaming the failure on too many breadsticks and insufficiently salted pasta-water!
But – as David Dayen wrote at the time – the hedge fund that produced that slide deck, , was not motivated by dissatisfaction with bread-sticks.
They were "activist investors" (finspeak for "rapacious assholes") 🔸with a giant stake in Darden Restaurants, Olive Garden's parent company.
They wanted Darden to liquidate all of Olive Garden's real-estate holdings
and declare a one-off dividend that would net investors a billion dollars,
while literally yanking the floor out from beneath Olive Garden,
converting it from owner to tenant, subject to rent-shocks and other nasty surprises.
In other words they wanted to asset-strip the company
("asset strip" is what they call it in hedge-fund land; the mafia calls it a "bust-out," famous to anyone who watched the twenty-third episode of The Sopranos)

Literally nothing except scheduling software could drop cargo ship emmissions by around 20%!?

This needs to be implemented on ALL shipping immediately! With global temperatures continuing to rise dramatically, every little bit helps and this is actually a huge benefit relatively speaking.

Do not confuse welfare with Universal Basic Income. If you get $1k in welfare does it make sense to take a $1k job, lose your welfare and end up with the same $1k? No.

If you get $1k UBI, does it make sense to take a $1k job and end up with $2k? Yes.

This is why so many pilots show increases in work.

Talk about silk purses from sow’s ears!

I take my 13yo episodes, some of which we recorded over Skype and sound pretty janky, run them through ’s , isolate the voices and process them through the tool, then re-integrate it replacing the original voices and it actually sounds pretty good.

AI tools have their place (just probably not as information repositories.)

(Needless to say, I don’t have the original master recordings anymore.)

It's been more than 5 years since the great documentary "American Factory" came out.

Did no one at TSMC bother to watch it? This reads like falling into the same cross-cultural traps all over again.
