Just said something on my synagogue listserve to the effect that Israel has hijacked the term “antisemitism” to advance its own interests and silence critics, often at the expense of American Jews, so effectively that Israel gets more support and consideration from much of our political class than we, actual people who live in America, do.

LOL we will see how people respond.

That popular leftist account with a Picrew avatar of a red-headed woman is saying egregiously incorrect things for likes and retoots again.

This time it’s “Joe Biden obviously has no plans to tax the rich” when his proposed presidential budget included raising taxes on the very rich, and more significantly, the IRS is aggressively going after rich tax cheats more aggressively than they have since…well, since I can remember.

There’s a lot of “the outcome of X is predetermined because lots of other people are doing/will do Y so it doesn’t matter if I do Z” going on, so people can justify shirking their responsibilities to each other.

This is about electoral stuff but also things like even minimal COVID mitigation and combatting climate change.

Well, yes and no. It wasn’t the House that the John Lewis VRA got stuck in, but the Senate, because Manchin and Sinema (mostly Manchin) preferred to keep the filibuster in place as a CYA measure. https://mastodon.social/@davidbrin/112491210974906425

Someone made a good point on our Synagogue listserve:

“To the extent that we decide we must hold allegiance to the term Zionist as a litmus test in Judaism, I wonder if we might inadvertently be communicating to young adults that their sorrow and anger around Israeli policy might mean there is no longer a place in Judaism for them.”

If you think “overpopulation” is at the root of environmental crises like climate change and you won’t acknowledge that the problem is actually an economic system that promotes relentless resource extraction, consumption, and externalizing costs to the environment, then you need to answer my follow-up question of “how many people do you think need to be genocided and which ones?”

It’s a fair question and you should show you’ve thought through your position.

“Both parties are the same” is really “the right wing has shifted the Overton Window to include the things they want and shut out the things we want.”

Or sometimes the things we want have not had their time in the Overton Window yet.

Pushing the Overton Window in any direction takes time and sustained effort. Once pushed, it does not immediately snap back when power changes hands.

I played a lot of (too much of?) #Fallout 3 and NEW VEGAS from the late aughts through the early 2010s but it’s only on seeing the TV series and replaying FNV that I realized: hey, the worst bastards in the setting are all revanchists, accelerationists, or revanchist accelerationists.

I think it’s because the TV series really hammers the point home in a way that the games maybe don’t, even though it’s a strong through line in the series.

Blocked a self-described anarchist who said progressives are “closeted shitlibs.” Not in conversation with me but while talking to someone else. This person doesn’t even know I exist, probably, but that’s fine, the point is I don’t want us to get to know each other better.

You can take a person out of the reactionary right wing but that doesn’t mean you take the reactionary out of a person I guess.

“Most of the people arrested at the campus protests were not students or faculty” is an oft-repeated (by police and media) lie that is debunked over and over again by students and faculty participating in (and getting arrested at) these protests. Almost all the people getting arrested are students and faculty.

The purpose of the lie is to prevent us from facing the reality of what’s being perpetrated on our kids and their teachers.

I get the strong impression that even if a lot of people on Fedi think that drawing a red line on and pausing military aid shipments is some kind of trick, the government of doesn’t think so, and is doing the typical thing abusers do when they’re denied cooperation that they have come to take for granted: hurting the person who withdrew it from them, or at least anything close to hand.

Some of the attitudes and behavior you see from conservatives and self-described liberals makes more sense when you understand the mindset: dead Jews and theoretical Jews are useful, but actual living Jews with opinions (and we have many opinions!) are inconvenient and difficult.

That’s been a thing for a while and it’s why nobody cares to register Jews’ criticism of Israel, or participation in campus protests. https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/112411881715629556

Today is Bike to School Day so my son and I went to school on our bikes. He still has training wheels and had to walk the bike up some steep sections but he did very well. And I was able to get home in 10 minutes.

I’ll be able to go pick him up on my bike and we can ride home together, since I locked up his bike on the rack at school.

Finally, but this isn’t going to slow Netanyahu’s murder machine down, because if he stops/accepts a ceasefire the absolute ghouls in his cabinet will force a new election, Netanyahu will be out of office, and his goose will be cooked https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/112402992882703683

Seeing a fair number of allegedly anti-genocide no-avatar accounts saying things along the lines of “if we stop giving Israel ammunition they will be destroyed and that’s good” or even “we should stop supplying Iron Dome (and other defensive systems too because Israel’s government will be forced into a peace agreement if Israel civilians are in danger.”

Kind of like how I used to see a lot of no-avatar hasbara accounts saying horrible things.

I had said before that the U.S. cutting off military aid to would not stop what they’re doing in right away for a variety of reasons, one being that the right-wing government really wants to keep doing what they’re doing.

cuts off two shipments of ammunition and orders a fresh assault on ~24 hours later, so what’s happening is even worse than I thought it would be.

I don’t know how many other people remember how much we all hated Senator Joe Manchin back in 2021-2022, but if you think Biden hasn’t done enough on COVID or the climate, Sen. Manchin is more to blame for that than anyone IMO.

He’s the reason climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act got watered down, and also why all the funding for anything related to COVID or the COVID economic crisis expired much sooner than they should have.

“Throw out anyone talking about violence (AKA entryists)” is good advice for any leftist movement that’s not focused on violence. (If your movement is like that, I’m not opening that can of worms today.)

Violence is different from disruptive protest tactics of course.

Entryists destroy thriving movements and organizations, but they’re also bad for situations where you need movement discipline, which is a lot of them.

With regards to pro-Palestine protests, the educational institutions have already hit that point where cracking down on the protests/protesters just makes the protests bigger.

Of course, they are trying to satisfy their mega-wealthy donors and fend off bad-faith right-wing accusations of antisemitism. As long as they are operating in that mode they’re going to keep making the situation worse

I’m happy about this, it will affect someone I know.

Non-competes are probably more common than you think they are and IMO they are a form of worker abuse, because it makes it harder to leave and make a living if your employer who made you sign one treats you poorly.

It’s happening tomorrow I am going to the local Brompton bike store to look at bikes.

I have a bit of dilemma because I want an electric bike with some cargo space but I have very little room in the house so it would probably need to be a folding bike and that won’t carry a lot.

Last year I was worried about what the infiltration and destruction of the DSA by entryists would mean for the broader American leftist movement but now I’m coming to realize it may have worse consequences than I thought.

A lot of leftists on here seem to think that politicians and parties changing their platforms in response to changes in their voter base/the electorate is dishonest or sinister and not normal, or what they are in fact supposed to do.
