Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

@mekkaokereke I am super annoyed that a lot of liberals have accepted beefing up border enforcement as synonymous with “immigration reform” when what we really need is to expand USCIS and revamp processing to fix the kind of problem you are talking about, so people can get legal residency more easily among other things.

“A death certificate would say he died of sepsis from a bone infection, but my friend and I have a term for the illness that killed him: end-stage poverty. We needed to coin a phrase because so many of our patients die of the same thing.”

Excellent essay by a US doctor describing how many of her patients suffer (and die) not from their illnesses but from the wildly precarious economics of their lives

American Medical Association Finally Drops Support of the BMI

IT’S ABOUT TIME

This article also mentions that the onset of “the obesity crisis” corresponds with the thresholds for “overweight” and “obese” being revised downward on the BMI chart. You heard that right, people didn’t really get fatter, they just tweaked the numbers.

@allanb Well, here’s the thing. I am one of those silly vapid Millennials but I’m also a 15-year cybersecurity professional who’s reasonably familiar with issues like tracking and surveillance in America and the threats posed by various state actors.

TikTok isn’t really a spying platform any more than any other commercial social media network, but Meta, for whom it is a serious competitor, would like the public and the government to think otherwise.

Let me repeat myself ONE MORE TIME. I'm a 59 year old BLACK WOMAN. You have a lot of fucking nerve attempting to tell me about the impure Dems. I've been voting ALL MY LIFE for the lesser of TWO evils. This time, you are voting for your OWN FUCKING SURVIVAL. If you don't get that by now, don't talk to me anymore. I'm tired of your privilege to even say SHIT like that out loud.

@StillIRise1963 I have also seen a lot of “oh we are equally oppressed whether it’s Democrats or Republicans in charge” and meanwhile a formerly homeless person I organize with says “which party controls the government determines how much SNAP and Medicaid and housing assistance people get or if they get it at all,” it’s a huge disconnect.

If there's one thing I hope that people have picked up on, it's that they're not just fighting Biden for change, they're fighting decades old institutions which are well connected and funded for change, which is a lot harder than trying to convince 1 person to change their policy.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi This is why people who are like “I wish we had a different nominee than Biden” miss the point IMO. Any other Democratic President and you’re still dealing with the same people, institutions, and baggage.

MisuseCase,

@RickiTarr GMOs. All the things people think they hate about GMOs are things they actually hate about capitalism and monopoly power. GMOs in the hands of small communities and collectives would be an unbridled good that would help preserve diverse and heritage crop strains, reduce dependence on pesticides and herbicides, reduce water use, and feed more people in the face of climate change.

The security community is going through the five stages of grief right now with the xz thing and I think a lot of people are coping with “there are technical measures that could have prevented this”. To move on, it is important to understand that this is not true in the slightest

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@saagar And I see some of y’all saying “but AI can help with reviewing this big codebase.” No, I assure you, it cannot. If humans can’t understand these huge masses of code, then AI (which isn’t really that at all) certainly can’t, because AI doesn’t “understand” anything.

It can maybe find possible compliance/rulebreaking issues, generating many false positives along the way, but not holistic/architectural gaps to be exploited. You need humans to find those.

Once again, the issue is portrayed as a bunch of extremists who took over Israel. This is not untrue, but it hides the fact that before these extremists were anywhere near power, Israel was already systematically dispossessing, colonizing, and brutalizing Palestinians.

Every Israeli I know hates Netanyahu, Israel's messianic far right, settlements, and settlers. And I mean HATES them.

But Israeli society is still overwhelmingly supportive of the war.

1/9

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@raph Not only did Netanyahu and other right-wingers sabotage efforts at a peace process, spread propaganda, etc. but they deliberately inflamed violence and made things worse.

All with the support of American Evangelical Christians, I might add.

This is pretty basic “moving the Overton window” stuff. They’ve been moving it for the past generation.

2/2

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@raph “Jewish Israelis have been like this the whole time” isn’t the full story, either.

Attitudes were different enough in the 90s that Israel had a prime minister willing to work out a peace deal with Palestinians, after all. To stop a peace deal, the Israeli right-wingers assassinated that PM.

Since then, and particularly in the past 20 years, they have promoted these kinds of attitudes among Jewish Israelis.

I don’t know if y’all are surprised by Elsevier letting an -generated paper through supposed peer review and publishing it without it ever going under the eyes of an editor, but I am not. “Most of the people arrested at the campus protests were not students or faculty” is an oft-repeated (by police and media) lie that is debunked over and over again by students and faculty participating in (and getting arrested at) these protests. Almost all the people getting arrested are students and faculty.

The purpose of the lie is to prevent us from facing the reality of what’s being perpetrated on our kids and their teachers.

If you think “overpopulation” is at the root of environmental crises like climate change and you won’t acknowledge that the problem is actually an economic system that promotes relentless resource extraction, consumption, and externalizing costs to the environment, then you need to answer my follow-up question of “how many people do you think need to be genocided and which ones?”

It’s a fair question and you should show you’ve thought through your position.

I am once again asking some of you to remember that it was conservatives, particularly those on SCOTUS, who scuttled Biden’s attempts to forgive all Federal student loans, not Biden (who is still forgiving different classes of student loans where possible).

Of course they bet at least some of you would be silly enough to blame Biden for it because the President is a wizard or something, and it looks like the bet is paying off.

MisuseCase, to random
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

The thing about “I want the Democratic Party to give me a better Presidential candidate than Biden” is that it’s “I want someone who won’t do war crimes to be President, a job that inevitably entails being some degree of war criminal.”

Or maybe some people want a President like Obama again, but he was also a war criminal and on the domestic front he was more neoliberal than Biden.

/1

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

My view that all Presidents are war criminals may give you the wrong idea about my view of electoral politics. We should still participate in electoral politics (not just voting, in every election, but bugging your electeds) because we should not concede or ignore any tool for making demands on power, empowering others, or reducing harm. Participating in electoral politics is one of those tools.
