This is 6.6% of the working population in the UK.

"The number of people economically inactive because of long-term sickness has risen to over 2.5M people, an increase of over 400,000 since the start of the coronavirus (-19) pandemic"

"...over 70% reported that they had more than one type of condition"

NOTE: 37.5M of the UK population are working age (16-64)

@justyourluck I'm convinced that unemployment is going to remain low for this reason no matter how hard they try to create a recession. Until governments take the biological threat seriously, there will be fewer and fewer workers available to do work. This doesn't even account for all those who have diminished capacity due to post-acute sequelae but are still able to scrape by at work for now.

The bubonic plague collapsed the feudal system because there were so few peasants left...

I responded in a mean way to a minimizer today, who was trying to tell people that the CFR of acute COVID-19 was 0.0875% while also ignoring the long-term risks. This person tried to tell people they had 3 infections without consequence.

While I know it's mean, I'm kind of convinced this is the best approach. They've bullied everyone else into risking their lives and/or killing themselves or disabling themselves. These people only understand confidence and force. Facts don't work. I think we need to bully back, where appropriate.

Said person either deleted their post or blocked me, not sure. I'm okay with either.

I’ve noticed a difference in people after they have had and it makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

Either they start acting like they are a little drunk - a little more confident, and laughing off mistakes that would have embarrassed them before. Or else they are a little on edge - more easily angered or frustrated.

Both are paired with obvious cognitive changes, like forgetting words and how to do things. It’s scary.

Professionalism is a social lubricant designed to make you and all your co-workers so boring that you have almost nothing to disagree about. It ensures you never speak about anything important and, when you do, it's met with silence and discipline for "unrelated" reasons. Professionalism allows those willing to break the social contract to make horrible, racist, genocidal, ableist, and eugenicist statements unchallenged. Silence is implied approval and bad actors know this. Professionalism is bullshit.

When someone says, "Stop living in fear," I hear a desperate plea, "Everything is fine. It's fine, dammit! TAKE THE MASK OFF! Everything is normal. Things can't be bad! IT'S TOO MUCH! PLEASE TAKE IT OFF! IT'S FUCKING FINE!"

People who've lived a soft life are exceptionally fragile.

I can't help but feel like "lockdowns" were a huge opportunity to reflect on our values as individuals and as a society and that we not only missed the opportunity, but doubled down on the worst parts of the before-times. I feel like we almost got there. Maybe that's why the powers that be so badly wanted us to return to "normal" so quickly.

I think often, now, about how capital has corrupted our relationships. People don't know how to interact without consumption. People don't know how to care for their parents as they age. People don't have their parents involved in raising their own children to a meaningful degree. People abandon their loved ones the second they become ill. Capital wants us mobile and unattached and sad so that we buy buy buy and there's a hole, there, in most people's lives, that can never be filled by the stuff they buy to replace that chunk of their soul.

@philmoscovitch @resuna I was in Alberta at the time, so I can really only speak to their moronic approach (not that anyone really took a serious approach anywhere). In substance, the lockdowns across most of the globe were ineffective because of all the massive loopholes and short duration, IMO. I agree, though. NS and some other provinces did have a more strict approach than the West, from what I heard at the time.

Anyone know of studies on communicating about covid risks, masking, other protections? When searching, ofc there's a wealth of studies about the actual risks and efficacy of precautions, but not about communicating on those topics. Surely this is a rich research area for sociology, linguistics, communications, other fields?

I wonder (and tbh worry a bit) about language used, e.g., asking people to mask "in support of" or "to show solidarity with" higher-risk groups. I wonder if this language could feed the notion that masking is a gesture, rather than a tangible benefit. Is this language effective, in convincing people to wear well-fitted respirators? (Or might it lead to haphazard under-the-nose type masking "to convey support"?) Should we instead be reminding folks of the science of transmission (e.g., asymptomatic spread, the technology of N95s, etc)?

I genuinely wonder what language and arguments are effective in convincing people and achieving goals. Any studies on this?

@another_katt @novid I've thought of this a lot and, honestly, I think we would all do well to learn a lot more about propaganda. After all, it's being used by the other side to convince people that COVID is over. Propaganda is powerful and you have to understand it to de-program its victims.

Also, I found the "Alt-Right Playbook" series on YouTube really helpful for recognizing ad dealing with bad faith arguments

More than three months after suffering from mild COVID infection, men have lower sperm concentrations and fewer sperm that are able to swim, according to new findings: https://www.miragenews.com/mens-semen-quality-drops-long-term-after-mild-1034385/#google_vignette

after an average of 100 days following SARS-CoV-2 infection there appeared to be no improvement in sperm quality and concentration, even though new sperm would have been produced in that time.

Half of the men had total sperm counts that were 57% lower after compared to their pre-COVID samples. The shape of the sperm was not significantly affected.

    Very early thoughts.

    Mastodon:
    ✅ Good community feel.
✅ Longer post length is sweet.
❌ No private messages or group chats.
    ❌ App is so-so.
    ❌ No quote sharing.

    Spoutible:
✅ Very similar to what I'm used to.
    ✅ Threading is very good.
    ❌ App feels slow.
❌ Timeline and notifications harder to use.

    Bluesky:
✅ Very familiar experience with the app.
❌ Not open to all yet.

    Post:
❌ No Android app is a deal breaker.

@TRyanGregory I also make liberal use of the block button here. It's a totally different algorithm and it helps my mental health to weed out the assholes. I rarely interact with trolls at all anymore.

You can make a post private in Tusky by clicking the button immediately right of the paperclip and choosing "direct". That way, the post only goes to people who have been addressed with the (at)name protocol.

Also, the more people you follow, the more engaging your timeline will be.

It seems so ironic to me that a huge chunk of so-called "preppers" were some of the first to doff their masks and declare infection unavoidable. This is literally what they prepared for and they failed at the first available opportunity to avoid a potentially collapse-inducing biological threat.
