"What's on your mind?"
oh idk the commercial supercomputers at work are pretty crazy, 3.5+ exaflops & 1.2 exabytes of near-singular compute performance per superpod, many superpods per building, many buildings per site, dozens of sites, and they can all be connected to form a singular supercomputer as soon as someone decides to want it badly enough. What someone could do with zettaflops worth compute power in a singular cluster with terabits of planetary interconnect power? idk play god probably

a poll for Free Software enthusiasts specifically

please only vote if you have strong positive views regarding copyleft licenses for software and cultural works

Can you name several video games you've played and enjoyed that match this criteria:

  1. The game was first published in 2023 or 2024.

  2. The entire game (all source code, art, music, etc) is freely available under appropriate open source licenses (permissive or copyleft)

If the answer is "yes", I'd love to hear about them.

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@aeva pirate solitaire is a solitaire variant available for android in the FDroid Store. It's not much but I've been enjoying it for small breaks or while waiting for something. Also the music loop is nice and the graphics are cool.

Bonus points: was developed with Godot

"Muss man Reis wirklich waschen?"

– "Laut Alexander Herrmann soll man jeden Reis waschen, ja."

alle waschen seitdem den Reis

😅

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

Alright since this is getting a lot of debate and is actually asked on some official tests:

Which form of electricity is more dangerous (assuming the same voltage/amps)?

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@anthropy you can't really compare amps and volt with AC and DC. There are different definitions for what Watts are in AC. Also strongly depends on frequency.

I want to implement a print view for our web shop's cart view, but the table is pushed to the next page if it's too long regardless of the break-inside/after CSS rules. :akko_weary:

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@volpeon yea. I typeset my résumé in HTML and CSS and while "@media" is an awesome tool, print view rendering and especially pagination is still cursed and varies wildly depending on browser

anthropy, to random
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

I sorta low key wish mail services and shipping options would give me the ability to indicate "I am not in a hurry"

Most people I'm sure want their package yesterday, but unless I specifically have a use for what's inside, I really don't care if it takes a day or a week.

I'd rather people don't feel rushed and, don't throw my package about, especially on these black friday type of events, and it'd be cool if I could indicate that somehow, other than not selecting the priority mail options ofc.

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@anthropy can I introduce you to Galaxus?
They have that option 👀
(Also they are a cool platform, though not always the cheapest)

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@anthropy That's the thing I like about Galaxus. If you order something below 30€ they charge you a "small order fee" to prevent people from making tons of small purchases and allowing for more efficient logistics. That way they cause a way lower carbon footprint. Also that incentivises buying local if possible.

Also they are extremely customer friendly: you can see price development, and how often things get returned for either defects or dissatisfaction.

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@anthropy yea, no worries. They are just by far the most customer friendly shopping site I ever used (including bol)

Pixdigit,

@anthropy don't feel pressured, I am just sharing my experience 😅

Wanted to start work again on my programming language. Instead I'm now learning OCaml and it looks fun so far

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@RyunoKi Don't worry, I've already been through Haskell. There are two major problems for me though:

  1. The ecosystem is not good. Incompatible GHC versions galore and dependency management is somehow even worse than JavaScript. Also there aren't as many "real-world" libraries that are still actively maintained.
  2. Way too dense syntax. I don't think I have to explain this one.

Extremely good news:
Researchers were able to recycle a fabric blend (cotton and polyester mixed). This has been impossible so far, as any reactions attacking the polyester also destroyed the cotton.

But here is the thing: it runs at room temperature, with off-the-shelf "household" chemicals, is tolerant to all tested common contaminants in recycled fabric and was easily scalabe from micrograms to grams. Also the residue is able to be turned into polyester again.

I had an idea for an anonymous, authenticated, zero-trust voting system. But probably somebody else already had the same idea. Any cryptographers around who might know?

Pixdigit,
@Pixdigit@layer8.space avatar

@niko for it to work it must be public who can vote, yes. But using a method similar to K-Means anonymity it cannot be deduced which vote belongs to whom
