There should be a tutorial built into git that teaches you how to use git and it should be accessed by typing 'git gud'

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

I think a lot about how

  1. a lot of command line UIs are kind of bad
  2. building better UIs is great
  3. but taking the time to get comfortable with a bad UI has often really paid off for me
  4. I'll often keep using an older tool with a worse UI because it's more stable, or more actively maintained, or has more features, or has more examples available, or my friends use it
  5. it's still important to acknowledge that the UI is in fact bad even if I'm pretty comfortable with it now
Scmbradley,

@b0rk could you give an example of good command line UIs?

Nope as a service: a RESTful API endpoint that accepts a string query as an argument and always responds "Nope!"

It's basically the next evolution of: https://scmb.xyz/nope.html

Related idea: get ICANN to let me administer the TLD ".nope" and then refuse every application for a domain name.

@christianp in fact, I could automate the process by using the above "nope as a service" API

I have this diagram that I want to "deep zoom" into for more detail. It's not that complex or "deep" (yet?) but already showing it as SVG in a browser is "problematic"

I can make the zoom work, but it's really pixelated and crappy until it "rests" at the new zoom level for a while.

Also Inkscape is somewhat grumpy with the file already, even on a decent desktop.

So, obviously I'm using the wrong tools (or using them wrong) -- how should I make this appear on the web?

Using Inkscape:

A screen-recording showing a diagram in Inkscape that is zoomed into for more and more details.

in 2009, on totally homebrew software, The Pirate Bay served 20 million simultaneous peers on 10 servers (20 for the website) for $3,000 a month.

i wonder how much serving 20 million simultaneous users costs netflix. there are ~260 million total subscribers of netflix (of which a fraction are active at a time) and its total operating expenses (which is obviously A Lot More Different Things Than TPB) are ~$7 Billion a year.

the comparison isn't all that ridiculous. netflix is about 10% of all bandwidth, and bittorrent used to be >30% of all bandwidth - of which TPB tracked roughly half.

https://web.archive.org/web/20210801122834/https://gigaom.com/2009/07/19/the-pirate-bay-distributing-the-worlds-entertainment-for-3000-a-month/

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@jonny I think there are two relevant differences. 1 Is P2P infrastructure suitable for streaming video? Not sure it would work reliably. (Counterpoint, don't bother with streaming). 2 not sure the bandwidth comparisons are fair: per user bandwidth is probably much higher than it was in TPB's heyday. (Counterpoint, don't bother with very high def video).

THEIR EXPERIENCE OF REJECTION IS THE ARTWORK

For the last 4 years, the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New Art has been running an installation called The Ladies Lounge. Only people who identify as ladies are allowed to enter. In the lounge, they can sit in luxury and look at famous artworks by Picasso etc, which are not available elsewhere in the museum. They are served champagne and pampered by male butlers. It was meant as a comment on exclusionary men's clubs (which still exist in Australia and elsewhere).

Some dude got upset about it and sued the gallery for entry at the anti-discrimination tribunal. The artist, Kirsha Kaechele, said she was "absolutely delighted" that the exhibit had been taken to court. “The men are experiencing Ladies Lounge, their experience of rejection is the artwork,” she said.

She then turned the tribunal hearing into part of the art as well, by having a group of women observing the hearing dress like her and mimic her every move. They did not disrupt the hearing, and at the end of proceedings they exited the tribunal to the song Simply Irresistible.

Kaechele argued in her defence the Ladies Lounge was a “a response to the lived experience of women forbidden from entering certain spaces throughout history” and promoted equal opportunity.

The tribunal found against the gallery and is ordering them to allow men to enter the exhibit. MONA is removing the exhibit instead.

Fucking love this artist 😂

Scmbradley,

@fullfathomfive this is extremely funny, I love it. It's also a potentially very interesting case study in what art is. Like really unpacking the claim that "their experience of rejection is the artwork" is probably worth a philosophy thesis.

I think what I don't like about the term "enshittification" is that it obscures who is responsible for making things worse.

It's not enshittification, it's the profit motive, and the diverging interests users of products and owners of products.

I'm sure Cory Doctorow (who I believe coined the term) knows all this, and probably said as much in his writing on the topic. But if we just use this shorthand to point to the problem, it makes the problem seem handed down from on high, we are in danger of letting the perpetrators off the hook. It didn't just happen: people made choices that made your life worse because it would make them richer. Fuck those guys.
