I need an outside compost thingy for food scraps and dog poop and I live in the desert (up to 115F in summer). Looking for recommendations. Not too big and must be able to contain smell.

Please only reply if you have direct composting experience, thank you.

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@thomasfuchs I presume you know this, but you shouldn't use compost that contains dog poop too grow food.

I swear, so much complexity of my life right now comes from me wanting to be able to graphically draw out an interconnected hypergraph but also have a convenient textual representation of said hypergraph

I'm sure this makes zero sense to people. But ugh. It's so frustrating to have the ideas in your brain and just not be able to really tease them out in a useful way for others

Signed,
trying to figure out how to map "do the platform engineering thing more better" into strategy and architecture

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@hazelweakly ugh yea. Ive explored a few text based ways of generating graphs or similar (mermaid.live, plantUML,tikz...), and they are all kind of terrible. I think part of the problem is that representing the relations between the items is one thing, and saying how you want to display those things is another, and it's apparently really hard to do both well.

Idle thought. What's the maximum number of ligatures you can have in a font?

ASCII is 128 characters. 33 of them are for control, 1 for space.
That leaves 95 printable characters.
95^2 = 9,025 combinations of pairs of characters.

Most pixel fonts seem to use a fixed width per character.

Is there a which could use ligatures to make an even smaller display area?

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Edent you can have ligatures that involve more than two characters: ffi for example.

I want to title my debut book "A Novel" to see if the publishers would put "A Novel: A Novel" on the cover.

(why do they always put "A Novel" on?)

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@amin make it the first in the "a novel" series, so they call it "a novel: a 'a novel' novel"

My BiL asked me tonight if I want to go and watch a double bill of Dune1&2. I said yes. He suggested next Thursday. I said sounds good what time. He said starts at 2030. I said that can't be right as both films with a break would be 6 hours and it wouldn't finish until half 2 in the morning. He said he's already bought the tickets. I check and it is 2030 finishing at half past 2 in the morning. What have I done?

Scmbradley,
@Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@TheBreadmonkey I did this when the third matrix movie came out. They showed all three back to back ending at silly o'clock. It was not a good experience apart from the first couple of hours watching the first film.

    The best kind of typo is the one that invents a new and appropriate word.

    I was just writing something about ranges of integers, and my fingers unexpectedly produced the word 'integerval', which is exactly what one of those is!

    On a previous occasion I was trying to disprove a claim that some kind of thing always gave rise to a countable set, and I found I'd accidentally written about an 'uncounterexampable'.

    Scmbradley,
    @Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @simontatham not a typo, but an apt portmanteau in a similar vein: if you're doing interval arithmetic, where an interval is not thought of as a range but as a value in and of itself, call it an intervalue.

    Lazyweb, I have a video game history question that I haven't found a compiled list of answers for anywhere, but let me ask for your participation in creating it.

    What games introduced the various video game mechanics of the world, and where did that mechanic best shine?

    As an example, I'm thinking "dune 2 introduced RTS unit management that was eventually refined into Warcraft/Starcraft" or "Narbacular Drop introduced the portal gun system that was eventually the backbone of Portal 1 & 2."

    Scmbradley,
    @Scmbradley@mathstodon.xyz avatar
