I tried to call a suicide prevention hotline, but all they were interested in was gaslighting me. Damn. Oh well. I knew I was on my own here anyway.

Was worth a shot.

Makes me glad I didn't slit my wrists. That leaves too much time to save me and jam me into a looney bin.

Just wondering--are any of you real? Are there any real people in my world yet or am I exclusively writing to cops and agents?

infectious shade
that cajoles you

At that tree.

and I’m working

Public policy and health in the Trump era via The Lancet

“Trump exploited low and middle-income white people's anger over their deteriorating life prospects to mobilise racial animus and xenophobia and enlist their support for policies that benefit high-income people and corporations and threaten health.”

I need something to do.

For the absolute first time in my life I'm not filled with surging emotions. Today is like a tabula rasa for me, and I'm hoping to build on it.

I've been stuck in autistic burnout since I was 8yo. The only hobby I ever had was picking through rolls of pennies to pull out the wheatbacks, for one summer as a preteen.

I really could use something to do that isn't computer based. I have books, but want something more active.

Suggestions?

What do people read?

I was an avid reader of fiction when I was a child. Novels about challenging issues or strange fantasy worlds. In many ways reading was an escape to a safe place, but those books were also places where I could learn about how “people” worked. How they thought, felt & behaved. The diversity in those things.

I loved The Little Princess and The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, because they were about children who were different & how they coped. I loved The Chronicles of Narnia because, although quite dated now, the girls had real adventures alongside their brothers. There was a series of books about witches, good & bad, which I loved but can’t remember the titles or author.

I loved Ivan Southall’s books, where tweens & teens faced dangers, often without the support of adults. (Marsden’s Tomorrow when the War Began is reminiscent of Southall.)

And as an adult, I still like youth & YA fiction, probably for the same reason, because I’m still learning how humans work. I also like adult fiction, but the naivety of youth fiction appeals.

And TBO, I read much more non-fiction than fiction nowadays. Obviously there’s the Autism & ADHD stuff that is currently dominating my reading, but also social commentaries of all sorts, by feminists, sociologists, etc.

If you liked the Narnia books, you might try Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series. It's about a male protag, but has a strong female love interest.

For nonfiction, "Means of control : how the hidden alliance of tech and government is creating..." by Byron somebody looks good.

Bear in mind, I was preteen when I was reading those books. In the 80s. I'm autistic and always thought sex roles were stupid; that's why I liked the Elionwy character so much. I really am curious what a modern woman who is sensitized to that stuff would think about the way he uses her character.

Anyway, here's a modern funny show that plays great games with sex role tropes:

Realized yesterday just how much neurotypicals infantilize us.

The biggest outrage people have with me and my store is “taking advantage of people with disabilities”

That’s essentially saying autistic adults aren’t capable of making our own educated decisions on what we’d like to buy, and I’m some bad person “selling people with autism things they don’t need.”

Ridiculous nonsense.😒

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer

I hate to come off sounding like a republican but are autistic people buying what you sell? It's been shown that we're less susceptible to marketing than the average monkey. If we're buying what you're selling, that kind of answers your critic.

I forget who, but some comedian criticized another one and a third, talking about it, said the first should have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

This is punching back after 50 years of mainstream grift. Cory plays economic observer:

"You know: supply and demand. ... The employer has overheads (rent on the shop, inventory, advertising and administration) that they have to pay out of their end of that surplus. But workers also have overheads: commuting costs, child-care, a professional wardrobe, and other expenses the worker incurs just so they can make money for their boss."

I wish economists would stop bullshitting about some crazy "invisible hand" and just whack their own selves off. The world would be a lot happier if they didn't do their wanking with the central banks.

I seem to have a theme today, but that "safety" is illusory. They are not safe. I recently spent some time aimless in South Africa, and when I first got there the cabdriver I asked to take me to a hotel with an open room took me to the white section (I am). The fear there was overwhelming. I left the next day. Out in the 90% of the country that is Black (or black? They never left Africa...) Anyway, it was a LOT more chill outside the white enclaves.

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell

Even aside from the whole dying biosphere thing, which fucks them only somewhat less than everyone else, hoarding "safety" is naturally counterproductive to it. That's why the French invented the guillotine, and the people at the top are far, far too aware of this now. It's one of those windows in history where we can make change. Lets do our best to make the most of it.

Interesting history of the quote with which I was going to close:

“[Ford said] ".. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur. "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@actuallyautistic

"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford."They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going in for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in.”

“Vapes were sold to governments & communities around the world as a therapeutic good: a product that could help hardened smokers kick the habit.
If vapes are therapeutic goods then it is entirely appropriate that Australia should regulate them as therapeutic goods, instead of allowing them to be sold alongside chocolate bars in convenience stores, often down the road from schools.
One in 6 high school students, & 1 in 4 young Australians aged between 18 & 24 are vaping.”

Truly and honestly, I have a great time here, because you all make it great. You boost, you reply, you encourage, and inspire! It is crazy to me that I get to talk to people from all over the world every day. I get to be friends with people I'll probably never actually get to physically meet. ICQ was sold to AOL and became AOL IM. Removing the "find me a single-serving friend" function caused me to abandon, but I can understand why your boss wouldn't want you to be able to socialize on his time.
