Recently saw many posts with confusions. How , works? Which instance to choose? If everything is decentralised then why do we need separate accounts for every project? How to post from one project to another? etc etc. Yes it’s confusing for me too. I am learning too. But just think, isn’t internet supposed to be like this, a confusing mesh? Once corporations started making it ‘streamlined’ the problem started. We should just focus on finding out our thing from this mesh!

Whoops! Turn out I spread some Misinfo about Lemmy. It's still developed by NazBols and you definitely should stick to kbin if at all possible, but the post I quoted was from someone who hated the very concept of federation.

If wasn't so buggy when it came to livestreams I'd use it as an addition to if I ever went back to . There's no dedicated chat feature either and I'm not sure how many people it would be able to handle if even a few moderate sized streamers started to use it.

I would probably use it for doing live streams for the fact that I can spread awareness of the , but also provide the same content to my viewers from Twitch but no ads they'd have to subscribe to and just suggest donating to my Ko-Fi instead.

Ok, nice little social media experiment, how does the fediverse fare during an earthquake?

A midnight earthquake just hit my home city, which basically never gets earthquakes. Probably no damage at all from this one, but we all definitely felt it, which is unusual for us! (Prob ~4 on Richter scale)

Where did I go first to check if others felt it? NGL, the place I went last time there was a tremor … Twitter. And to be fair, on the top of my feed were posts from people I follow (who aren’t here) that live in my home city, tweeting about it, including links to official reports. This was very nice, as this time I was scared and thought my apartment building might be in trouble.

I quickly check and . Nothing in timelines. Not surprising, I don’t really follow anyone or many that live in the same city as me.

Searching, mastodon’s hashtag search does ok, and surfaces a bot or two that also confirm the quake (@lastquake). But not many people, I’m not really finding a conversation. This is on an instance with ~50k users.

Quicker. Just typed earthquake without worrying about hashtags.

And better results. More people were brought up, which is kinda what you’re after from social media during an event … reassurance. It was also surprising, as calckey has only ~2k users and therefore smaller visibility of the fediverse, but still gave me more connectivity just through search than my bigger mastodon instance.

Which is really an interesting demonstration of how hashtags can be problematic. Plenty of people were reaching out, asking “anyone feel that earthquake?”, they just forgot or didn’t think to use a hashtag, and so couldn’t find me through mastodon. And why would you in a (slightly) nervous situation like that. “Hmmm, is this the best hashtag, do you think people will search for it … I should probably check if it exists first?” … is not a thought goes through your mind.

I basically never visit Twitter since I left, but this was a nostalgic little episode. It was nice to see the fediverse wasn’t really behind big social. Though the lack of discovery facilities on mastodon really did show themselves here.

At the same time the fedivers is reducing my dependency on social media like a substitution. I like it!

Anyone knows how long it can take for changes to my instance to take effect on other instances? I changed the nyame and icon like 12+ hours ago but so far it seems to not have taken effect yet

@SimonJohnGreen @GayCookie maybe the servers are a little slow atm because a lot of new people are joining? Yesterday was some big problem with account transfers and it slowed down.

Right so there are quite a few bits and pieces in that are far from ideal. We now the good, it is time to point out the ugly:

  • Why can't we filter boosts? This renders any timeline unreadable if you follow more than 100 users.
  • Why can't we get help? With mastodon, people see you in the local timeline. You can ask info, but since problem 1 (boosts can't be hidden) means the local timeline is whatever local people boosts more than their own genuine thoughts, they can't see you asking for help.
  • Edit button. But it's coming.

Those are the 3 I've compiled so far. And the boosting issue is really getting on my nerves. SPECIALLY now that I've brought in all my follows/followers.

I can use the Mona App on iOs Testflight to log in to mastodon and calckey accounts at the same time. Easy switching!
