So, an update on things. #Calckey

  1. I'm very sorry for all of the degraded performance lately on calckey.social. As you may or may not know, we've been testing changes with our codebase, database deployment, ims deployment, and a whole lot more. After a lot of testing and changes, I thought that we were good enough to start opening signups again. Turns out... we're not. As I continue to work on things and start team up with some very smart people who've worked in deployment and scaling systems, we're going to do our absolute best to make sure that we can handle things on all ends, and hopefully get extra hands on deck for day-to-day operations, so it's not all on my shoulders. I was sadly unable to attend to a lot of things yesterday due to being out of town for the holiday, and being in a no-service area for the majority of the day, so I didn't know that there were issues until it was too late. Thank you for your patience as we go through growing pains. A full write-up on what went wrong, the steps we took, and how it's fixed (once it's fixed!) will be made after all this is done. For real.

  2. I did NOT expect this amount of support, interest, and coverage! Hitting 13k from 11k in a little over 2 days across all servers is still boggling my mind. And it's not just calckey.social -- so many other servers are getting new users, and even ~30 new servers cropped up! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. I'll make sure that I do my hardest to make sure you all have a great experience.

  3. As promised, you all deserve a peak into what we've been working on in secret for months. More details to come tonight/tomorrow. Stay tuned. 😉

Users should have been informed immediately that they needed to rotate their passwords. You don't have to give details, but you do have to tell people to do that as soon as the breach happens.

Users should also have been informed as soon as possible that a breach had occurred, again even if you can't give details for whatever reasons.

"Without undue delay" is the language in the GDPR. That seems like a good guideline.

May be interested to hear that Aveta, the community organizer in black tech Twitter has launched a defederated Calckey instance that will be prioritize safety, privacy, and accessibility for minorities.

I’ve been working with her and others and while launched it is still invite only as we address T&S, accessibility issues and how to best grow the platform focused on users.

    Actually effective strategies against to prevent an are difficult, but they start from asking "what will actually help here."

    I maintain that preemptive is ineffective for this and that defederating from those who won't defederate from meta does more harm than good.

    But what will help is thinking about the roadmap and getting there first. What will help is building a robust and thriving community around and other fediverse protocols.

    Meta is looking to implement post importing. That's been a feature request since forever (see https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/177 and https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423 ).

    Secure messaging is another example.

    These are things that if meta implements them and does even a halfway decent job then controls the standard.

    Want to prevent that?

    Get there first or at least have a strong offering on how to do these things out of the gate. Let us as a community control the standards that we use.

    I'm laughing at memes about billionaires who can't pull themselves up to the surface by their own bootstraps, but in reality I'm furious.

    I'm furious I was accused of human smuggling by FRONTEX (European border agency) for being part of a sea rescue operation that saved 1000+ lives of refugees fleeing war & terrorism.

    I'm furious at the money & international effort being spent to rescue these billionaires when operations like ours cost so little and save so many lives, but are punished.

    I'm furious about the money & international effort spent on both the causes of the desperate migration of refugees, and the money & effort spent to block and punish rescuers & refugees alike, and to force rescuers to leave thousands of people to die.

    A couple billionaires drown on an $$$ and ill-advised tourist trip and it's tragedy. Thousands of refugees die and it's punishment for their crime of what? Color of their skin? Location of their birth? The amount of capital they don't own?

    If you're concerned about the billionaires but can't have the slightest amount of compassion for refugees drowning at sea, you're the problem.

    I'm looking at every nation, media outlet, and yes, Billionaire, that gives this amount of coverage, money, and international resources to this rescue operation but contribute to the opposite to migrants fleeing oppression and violence.

    I'm still laser focused on the @pixelfed app, but I now have a lot of experience with React Native and building production Android/iOS apps.

    My goal is to lay the framework and basics for the Kbin app, in the open, and encourage the Kbin community to contribute and steward the direction.

    Ultimately, my goal is to work closely with @ernest and for him to have veto over any changes I make until it's formally handed over.

    It is up and running -- and everything is functioning great!

    However, it is not yet open for registrations. I have a little more configuring to do, particularly with the TOS. However, it will be open and available to more people soon 🎉
