Via Kyle Griffin:

In light of the second Alito flag report, Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin is calling for Samuel to recuse himself "immediately" from cases related to the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection "for the good of the country."

He adds: "The Chief Justice must see how this is damaging the Court and immediately enact an enforceable code of conduct."

@GottaLaff

Because that tact (finger-wagging, essentially) worked SOOOOOO well with Clarence Thomas.

(sorry ... I'm full of sarcasm about this topic. The redundancy of scandals with nobody with power doing a damned thing that is actually effective is just infuriating)

The conundrum worsens if a person accepts the dictate that a monotheistic god is omni-benevolent, omniscient, and all powerful.

The "problem of evil" is insurmountable all the way down to the most basic level--it's existence.

Ahhhh. Philosophy. Good times. ;-)

With Christianity (since that's what I grew up with), I start with Satan (originally an "angel", created by god) as the example. And, since Christianity sets the font of evil at Satan's feet .

TBH, the convos tend to be short-lived either because the person gets mad at the logic or they find my nerdiness about it annoying. 🤣

Nice! Unsurprisingly, you were a smart and thoughtful kid.

That's some intense Democratic finger wagging at Alito ...

I'm sure that will be amazingly effective as a means to convince Alito to recuse himself from all Jan 6 related cases.

I mean, what racist, misogynist, religious extremist wouldn't feel shamed and recalcitrant when his professed "enemies" are finger-wagging him.

(Read: extreme sarcasm)

Yep. It sucks, but makes good sense. If he tried -- with anything other than 100% certainty he can win the argument at the 11th--and then fails, he will tank the case since it will still be in front of her (among other things).

Side-note: my 20-something daughter asked me the same question yesterday, and we had this exact convo 🤣

Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

The people who talk that way are the ones who blame the wives that they have to work so much ... giving them a(nother) rationalization for cheating and/or being abusive.

No exaggeration. No joke. I know too many guys like this. Grew up around it.

(And, the women who agree with the that way of thinking full-on believe that it's their fault that they "can't keep him happy" thus, thus further rationalizing & justifying the shitty behavior of the husband.)

Pundits absolutely do not grasp the fact that Trump's trial's value does NOT rest on whether or not it "moves voters" if he's convicted.

The VALUE is accountability.

The VALUE is a working system of law that functions--regardless of whom the person happens to be or what position that person holds.

Treating it like "no biggie" because voters APPEAR unmoved is great messaging -- for Trump.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@chemoelectric

Oh, I agree, he won't serve jail time here. But a guilty conviction -- on prinicple -- matters for the reasons I stated above (accountability, legal system that can function for all--regardless of position, power, or wealth).

And, yeah ... very much agree on the harsh difference between what journalism theory is vs the end-goal of news outlets.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@chemoelectric

I have the same problem with philosophy (my major years ago) ... the difference between "Cloud" contemplation and putting those ideas into practice is gargantuan. Academic philosophy is incredibly detached from reality ...

(What I'm trying to say is that I understand the connection with academia and its many complications with the real world.)

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@chemoelectric

Love to hear about women in philosophy. I was one of just two women in my program. 🙂

I started as an English major, but via an honors program, became enamored with philosophical ideas as foundational thought and (particularly) the study of ethics, so I switched majors.

Many many regrets. sigh

What does Tony Robbins do except get paid to give motivational speeches? Lol, always found people like that and their faithful converts interesting.

Like the people who tell you if you attend their seminar they'll teach you how to be a real estate investor. Well...are they making their money from real estate investments or from the people paying to attend those flimsy seminars?

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

The people change cuts both ways.

Yes, people can change, but many don't. So, my advice is to rely on Maya Angelou--When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Look for red flags. Don't assume the person will change (e.g., don't think "well, they had a bad day" when they raged at you;, etc.).

To your point, yes---healthy people grow and change (mostly for the better). But, regretfully, that does not apply to abusive people.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

The mistake I made was believing it was a "one time thing" or finding other ways to minimize what was happening. Thinking I was overreacting. I was constantly on the "cup-half-full" side of things.

Really hard lesson learned.

Wish I were an anomaly. But, sadly, I see it happen a lot with others. And it breaks my heart.

For those following the Trump election fraud trial.

Is this really what just happened?

Trump attorney shows Cohen texts between Cohen and Schiller that do not mention the Stormy matter. The attorney then says that these texts prove Cohen did not discuss the Stormy matter in a subsequent phone call.

Missing something here? Does this make any logical sense?

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@mastodonmigration

It seems that the call directly after the texts discussing only some harassment only lasted 1 minute ... so odds are good this wasn't the call Cohen is remembering having with Trump about the Stormy matter.

It doesn't look great.

And, I'm pissed. I dislike Cohen very much, but dammit--he needs to be fully open if he wants to see Trump convicted. Any hint of him lying or deceiving in this case could tank the case.

Here's hoping the prosecutors clean this up on redirect.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@mastodonmigration

Cohen assertively stated that on this very specific call, he spoke with Trump about the Stormy Daniels stuff and that Trump told him to take care of it.

Big claim. Important to connecting Trump to participation in the scheme.

By showing that this could not have happened as Cohen stated, it leaves the jury with a) he maybe doesn't remember as well as he has stated; or b) he's deceiving. Neither are good for the case.

Sorry. Not sure how to more eloquently flesh this out.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@mastodonmigration

  1. The stuff he was texting Schiller right before the call was harassment (not Stormy)

  2. Schiller says "just call me" in response to their convo about the harassment

  3. The call only lasts one minute

-- very logical conclusion is that the call was about the harassment. Not Stormy.

-- and, on a practical level, given that the call was only 1 minute, it's highly unlikely Cohen spoke with Trump at all

Honestly (and as much as I really hate to say it) ... it looks bad.
