Just wanna brag that my youngest (13 yrs old) and my middle daughter VOLUNTARILY watched Biden's speech. And, they liked it. :-)

Proud mom moment. 🤟

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

This is interesting. I have always embraced a direct approach ... much to the chagrin of many.

Interestingly, in my experience men are the ones who are incredibly indirect (up until the point that they get angry, then the direct approach comes out). Bosses, co-workers, friends, family members. I've only known a couple of men who were direct.

Maybe it's a human problem more than a gender problem?

A really small, but annoying point about the Trump case (GA) right now ...

It's wild to me that someone who becomes an attorney (where public speaking is an absolute necessity) says "um" as much as the guy in GA right now.

I'm twitching.

(I'm well aware it's not a substantive critique. I just wish this guy were a better speaker on Willis' behalf.)

If you’re the kind of person who can’t handle compromise with people of different views from your own, you are an authoritarian—no matter how progressive you think you are.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet

I know what you're getting at--and agree with the general idea. Though, there's a huge caveat here. It absolutely depends on what ideas you're compromising with.

Example:
I disagree with the guy who thinks all women should be forced to stay home, in pre-arranged marriages, barefoot and pregnant. And, I see nothing rational to compromise with there. This does not make me an authoritarian.

I guess my point is, it's good to be cautious with generalities.

While the article is clear that the interference has been a continuing endeavor for many years ... the title gives off the perception that their interference stopped at some point. Given that a whole crap ton of people don't read the articles ... just the title, it's safe to say that this title is misleading.

Very frustrating (from someone who spent 80 - 100 hrs/wk for years tracking those fake networks)

"Gaslighting: ✔️
Authoritarianism: ✔️
Political dissident: ✔️"

Via Ruth Ben-Ghiat:

Going strong since Mussolini: the tyrant as victim. Now Trump is a dissident persecuted by the "Biden regime."

People found all of the memes of Trump with Jesus standing over him, hand on his shoulder (and similar) funny, if maybe a little weird.

But, it wasn't funny or silly. At all. It was a deliberate slow-burn propaganda campaign ... to lead to this very thing. Hell, he had hundreds of thousands of fake accts amplifying those memes. For a reason.

It's horrendous how much we keep underestimating his few abilities--and propaganda is absolutely one of his strong suits.

He also wanted to let the world know how important he believes himself to be ... while attempting to humiliate her publicly ... for being powerless.

Because, if, for some reason, what she posted was a concern, he could have (seemingly) gone through NASA to have a word with her ... offline. Still ridiculous given she was merely celebrating her position with NASA ... but not nearly as bad as doing this on fucking social media. My god. What a thorough asshole.

I wish I could truly make people understand how much of a cult Conservative Fundamentalism is, and how much it truly brainwashes you. It is easy to say, "How can those people be so stupid, how can they not see?", but unless you've been inside it, you cannot understand how much effort is put into making sure that people cannot understand or see.

VirginiaMurr,
@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr

This is a tough one for me.

I don't view people w/ different beliefs as "the enemy". Never have---never will. I also don't view them as intellectually inferior.

But, I do see some of them as bad people w/ bad character. The line for me is if they are willing to harm others (or allow others to be harmed) in the furtherance of their beliefs. That's the don't-cross line for me.

If they can't see the real harm they cause, then trying to understand them (to me) is pointless.

I think it's a numbers game (not unlike soc. media). The subscriber/active account numbers are everything to these companies.

Quick example of the importance of #'s
-Apple Music made approximately $8.3 billion revenue in 2022
-88 million people subscribe to Apple Music as of June 2022
-Apple Music has more subscribers than Spotify in the United States ...
-Apple Music pays artists on average $0.0076 per listen

A President *JFK) quite literally championed his presence on Chuck Yeager's team

The President sent people to check on him and make sure he was doing okay while he was with Chuck Yeager's team.

YET he still suffered racism. And Yeager himself set the example that the racism was okay.

Within just days of the President's assassination, this eminently qualified, intelligent, kind man was booted out of the program.

Do not tell me DEI isn't absolutely essential.

Trump threatened to LEAVE NATO (not just abandon some of our allies there) multiple times during his presidency.

    I take each as it comes. Some appear nefarious -- insta-block. Others, though, explain in the bio who's running the account (or created the bot). If it's a person I can reasonably conclude is well-intended, then I don't block.

    Caveat: it takes a bit of time to track it all down for assessment. If I don't have the time, I default block. I've learned what may be not the best lesson on bigger platforms ... err on the side of assuming mal-intent.

    Ah, that makes sense.

    Indeed, if there is any hint of duplicity (false communities, for example), then I block as well.
