Sunak urged to block anyone convicted of sexual offences from standing as MP

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/feb/17/rishi-sunak-urged-to-block-convicted-of-sexual-offences-mp

Formal rules to block relevant candidates will make it easier to ‘weed out the bad apples’, politicians say

Really - they don’t already do that? Colour me surprised. But then I suppose a bit of ‘innuendo' has always been the colour of many politicians.

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen they need compromised MPs as it helps the whips to ensure they vote the government's way. That's why democracy in this country stinks like a dead animal in the midday sun...

"..But then enough farmers voted for Brexit to help win the referendum, enough farmers flew Union flags on their land proclaiming their hatred of Brussels. Enough believed in cakeism. They served their purpose; they allowed the Brexit campaign to pose as countryside-loving patriots. Now that the deal is done, the farming industry just doesn't matter any more."

Jonty Bloom. The New European.

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@RejoinEU @Wen where were the farmers that didn't vote for Brexit? Where were the campaigns to remain with those voices, the problem is the majority of farmers wanted to leave, the ones who didn't kept quiet, that's why it felt like full consensus across the board. Now it appears like they are annoyed because they are losing their money & they were promised more money if we left. Plus Lincolnshire is a massive farming county & a gigantic Brexit county. It's all a real mess...

Give the NY Times credit, they've nailed conservative Britain. See below this is what all Americans think of Britain and we unfortunately get tarred by the same brush. Labour won’t be any better. It’s time to wake up Scotland and fight for our country. WE NEED OUR are ?

I want to upgrade our TV from the existing 1080 x 720p, and I have 2 questions:

  1. Does anyone want a 1080 x 720p Sony Bravia TV (No stand, currently wall mounted)? Free to collect, can drop off if you have limited transport, and might pay for a stand if you need one and are cash poor :)

  2. Can anyone advise me what brand and model (50” max prolly, limited space) we should get? Not looking to spend $1000s. Choice seems to be between LG, Samsung, and Sony. All opinions gratefully received :)

@anathema_device @BobLefridge @aweatherall @thomasbeagle in my experience TCL are a little slow but they do have an android OS which is handy for side loading you favourite apps that are not normally available on smart TVs...

We celebrate raising money more than we celebrate finding customers. Doesn’t that seem ass backwards to you?

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan customers get in the way of making money, if companies could just keep a dark triad between the company, their shareholders and the stock market, who will speculate on the value and then they just get bonuses based on that, I don't think they would ever bother making anything ever again. I guess that's how crypto works...

‘I would tell my family to avoid the Max. I would tell everyone, really,’ said Joe Jacobsen, a former engineer at Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.”

Many younger people have no good reason to believe in the UK so why would they fight for it?
https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/01/26/many-younger-people-have-no-good-reason-to-believe-in-the-uk-so-why-would-they-fight-for-it/
There has been a call made by a serving UK general for the creation of a ‘citizen's army' in the UK. Such is the size of the army that he suggests to be required to supposedly face Putin that conscription would probably be necessary to find the 500,000 soldiers he thinks to be necessary.

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@kim_harding I wouldn't fight for this country, it's a Tory shit hole full of racism & inequality, plus they wouldn't be able to pay most people enough to cover their mortgages/rent whilst in the service, so if people were called up they would come back to nothing, if they were hurt, injured or disabled they would just be spat on by the population & told they didn't deserve any support or benefits, not to mention if they end up with mental health issues, they would just be left on the streets.

@Wen @Fife4Europe as long as people keep bringing it up the bastards don't get a chance to be forgotten, their involvement in the worst peacetime attack on the UK needs to go down in history with a list of the traitors names & their involvement indexed to the lies & articles they put out into the public sphere, who paid them to do it & who their friends were. This ensures that future generations can have the opportunity to read about how lying & money destroyed this country...

As if the scandal was not awful enough, it transpires that PO lawyers used non-disclosure agreements to try to stifle & limit knowledge of the extent of the actions against sub-postmasters.

NDAs have been widely & corrosively used in higher education & other sectors to stifle criticism of senior management, but here they were used to hide the effects of fraudulent actions against sub postmasters & families

The legal profession needs to take a good look at itself!

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 I didn't think NDA's were still enforceable when used to cover up actual crimes?

Vonskinnback,
@Vonskinnback@mastodon.social avatar

@freequaybuoy @ChrisMayLA6 I think as always, you are entitled to free speech, but not from consequences, still a complete breech of human rights & it is very rare to hear of an NDA being used for anything else other than to protect wealth & power, there should be a legal requirement for an NDA only to be signed off by an independent adjudicator, where they have to tell them why they want it & what it will be used for, rather than currently where they're done in the shadows.
