This discussion about whether the purpose of Mastodon is to centralize or decentralize social media seems pretty esoteric to me. The purpose is to build a vibrant platform and alternative to Twitter – not to use some particular technology that most people struggle to understand.

Many people seem convinced the attack on the Kremlin was a false flag operation. I have doubts because:

  1. The incident is embarrassing for 's air defense. It's weird to make a false flag operation that makes yourself look incompetent and the enemy look strong.

  2. The Russian media have a pretty calm reaction. It doesn't look like a coordinated information operation.

  3. The claim that the drone was defeated with electronic countermeasures doesn't fit the video.

Can a war between Russia and NATO really happen within the next few years? Recently there have been several warnings from politicians and high-level military leaders. In this video I discuss what on earth they are talking about, and what such a war might look like. And I think it's an important discussion, because the risk is bigger than many people assume.

What a day. The attack by the Wagner group into was a direct attack on Putin's credibility. It may signal the beginning of the end for Russia's president. In this video I share my initial thoughts. https://youtu.be/ZxDykKhCYAA

Russia is in a spiral of escalating repression, but it is nevertheless noteworthy when milestones are being passed. That happened with Prigozhin's plane crash and the arrest of Girkin. With these events, Putin has redefined the rules of how politics are done in Russia. That is my topic in this video.

Bluesky definitely feels like a beta product at this point. Just got an account, and I am pretty underwhelmed. But they have quote posts…

Some people say that if Ukraine's summer offensive is a failure, may have to settle for a peace deal even if it means giving up some territory. This is a problematic argument, because it implies that it is only up to Ukraine to make compromises. I think it's important to consider what 's demands might be for peace too. So here is a short 🧵 about what Russia's minimum demands must be expected to be. 1/6

This may be a good time to remind people that so far the U.S. military aid to has amounted to about $ 135 per citizen. Judging by the public debate one would think it was a lot more.

Biden's speech on and is worth watching. A few quick reflections:

  1. Biden explained why it is in U.S. own national interest to support Ukraine. I think this argument has been taken for granted for too long by the supporters of Ukraine, so it's good to hear it articulated. It's not just about helping people abroad, but because it's important for U.S. itself.

How are the NATO countries doing in reaching the 2 percent goal for defense spending? The slowest to approach the target will be Slovenia, Denmark, and Belgium. However, the supreme underperformer remains Luxembourg. https://icds.ee/en/defence-spending-who-is-doing-what/

I have ventured into the genre of reaction videos. Military analyst Michael Kofman has argued that made a mistake when they decided to fight for Bakhmut, and that it undermined their preparations for the counteroffensive. Supposedly this is one of the reasons why the offensive has not delivered more results. Kofman is an influential figure, so I think it's important to point out that there are weaknesses in his argument. https://youtu.be/rNw4wkkibso

As a rule of thumb I think it should not be necessary in a democracy to use a VPN to do basic research. I am currently in , and I have to VPN out of this country to read what Lavrov has to say about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. 🤨

If the U.S. will play a smaller role in European security going forward, we need to have a conversation about nuclear weapons. The current UK and French arsenals are not sufficient to deter Russia, but the big question is if the solution is to grow their stockpiles, or if more countries need to join the nuclear club.

(The fact that this is now a discussion just goes to show the shortsightedness of American isolationalism.)

I have not noticed this yet. On Twitter I was regularly contacted by journalists who wanted to make a story out of something I had written, but I still have not experienced that on Mastodon. Maybe Danish journalists are slower to adopt new technology. 🤷‍♂️

My top three tips for beginners on Mastodon:

  1. Add a profile picture.
  2. Follow many people. You need to follow hundreds to get a lively timeline. And in the meantime use the local and federated timelines to find interesting stuff.
  3. Don't use the official Mastodon app. There are much better third-party alternatives.

In my latest YouTube video I use the phrase “the people is” several times. This has started quite a discussion in the comments section about whether or not that is grammatically correct. Some people insist it’s always “people are”, while others say that in this case “people is” is the right way. What’s right? Is there a nuance between British and American English here?

To anyone wondering why the West is not making a big deal out of a drone hitting Romania, I have an explanation in this video. NATO believes they have a winning strategy toward Russia, and they don’t want to spoil that by getting distracted from winning.

It really is remarkable that Ukraine managed to destroy two warships and a shipyard in today’s attack. It really shows why it does make sense for western countries to provide long-range missiles. Hopefully U.S. and Germany will soon follow the examples from UK and France.

As a Scandinavian I also cannot help but appreciate the fact that the destroyed landing ship was from the Russian Baltic Fleet. I have escorted this ship through Danish waters several times.

Russian state media continue to push the explanation that the arrested terrorists did it for money. Apparently, the salary for becoming a mass murderer was USD 5400.
They don't mention ISIS with a single word.

On a sidenote, it has always puzzled me that Russians in uniform so often wear masks on TV even in situations where it makes no operational sense. Are they not proud to be associated with their service?
