Do you know librarians who have created Mastodon instances?

A librarian at my institution is interested in advocating for creating one. It might be helpful to read about other librarians' experiences doing this or the existence of some other cases managed by libraries.

Fantastic -- if super-distressing -- article by Gisele Navarro about the horrible state of product reviews online

The tl;dr is that Google seems to overweight reviews from longstanding big journalism brands ...

... but many of those brands, like Popular Science, were long ago bought up by private equity or conglomerates, then hollowed out ...

... so they now produce crappy articles that are probably lying about their "test labs" to please Google

https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/

Read it! So good

@clive my review process now is:
‘product-name wirecutter’

followed by ‘product-name site:reddit.com’

followed by asking friends and colleagues

We're organizing a small in-person workshop about federated/decentralized social media at Princeton.

https://dsmw.cs.princeton.edu/

We're interested in bringing folks who develop fediverse tech or admins that manage active Mastodon instances. We have some travel funding.

Ping me if interested, and please boost 🚀 to reach more people.

We're looking for suggestions for creative subdomains for a Mastodon server at a university.

The main constraint is that the university doesn’t want to let us use a third-level domain like foo.princeton.edu, but they might be okay with foo.bar.princeton.edu.

What would be a good foo.bar subdomain?

Some ideas:
fedi.verse.princeton.edu
activity.pub.princeton.edu

Any other ones?

P.S. Using mastodon in the domain might not be a good long-term idea because the software might change.

Woah! Someone posted the 1 billionth Scratch project online:
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1000000000

The Scratch online community has come a long way since it started as a master's thesis project!

Here is one of the first mock-ups of the website I did around 2005, inspired Flickr and some other "web 2.0" websites of that era

Do you know anyone looking for a postdoc to turn their research into broadly adopted tech? This (social) entrepreneurship fellowship at Princeton comes with a $120k package.

I’d be excited to be the faculty sponsor for someone working on social computing systems, specifically on improving the labor conditions of gig workers or on social AR.

Applications are due July 16

S7E1 of HBO's Silicon Valley:

Richard Hendricks of Pied Piper discovers that the foundational technology of Pied Piper has been built entirely on OpenAI's tech stack. With Sam and his team's departure from OpenAI to Hooli, Pied Piper's entire operation is at risk. Richard scrambles to save his company from collapsing.

The twist comes when it's revealed that Erlich, in his quest for revenge against Richard, had infiltrated OpenAI's board with the specific intention of destabilizing Pied Piper.

What’s an interesting 12-week -related project for computer science undergrads? 🧑🏽‍🏫

I’m teaching a class for Princeton undergrads in the Fall 🍂 and I want to give them an option to work on a project focused on either building a system, or studying something about how people use the Fediverse.

Setting “mastodon.social” as the default on the main Mastodon mobile app kicked a can down the road and turned into a keg of gunpowder 🥫➡️🧨

It might have solved a UX problem (instance selection) in the short term. But it introduced an exponentially harder sociotechnical problem: scaling moderation.

Instead, we should:
a) increase the number of smaller and well-moderated instances.
b) turn instance selection UX into a productive type of friction.

these days Google Scholar usually knows about my publications having been made publicly available before I do, and so I just update the list of publications on my web page based on it.

I think back in the day, I would post papers on my web page because it would take too long for them to appear on the official sites, and they'd be paywalled and hard to access there.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jbigham the most surprising gscholar updates for me are patents. For some reason my previous employer decided to submit over 50 of those in recent months and it feels like my gscholar is being spammed. Also all of them are in all UPPER CASE so it’s even more jarring.
