Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

We are working on a solution to ensure our continued presence on your feeds, taking full advantage of Mastodon's identity portability.

And we are even growing the team behind our Mastodon presence, increasing efforts to engage with your comments on our posts.

We are fully committed to being a real part of the conversation in the fediverse.

Interested in our next steps? Follow us as we take on this new chapter.

@EU_Commission It seems as if you are migrating from towards another platform.

Which option are you considering‽ with the plugin enabled‽

Depending on the host, that would be a less expensive option.

@darnell

This is a side issue, but when there's a conversation between a human and a media team of humans, it's interesting to at least get some feeling for who might be "hiding" in the team. In the case of @EU_Commission my guess is the people here tagged 'social media':

https://commission.europa.eu/about-european-commission/contact/press-services/press-contacts/commissions-spokespersons-service_en

are the team behind the @. The profile itself says nothing specific about who manages the messages, how their content is decided (e.g. on an internal wiki, on a cryptpad, or on a git repository).

@boud Many of us don't know who many of the various Mastodon admins are. So... With institutional organizations, social media posts are generally approved by a committee.

benjaoming,

@darnell @EU_Commission the update contains an illustration with a heart and a Mastodon logo, so it seems very obvious what the intention is 😉️

Looking forward to seeing the next step here, it's very promising!

@EU_Commission

You should do a press release immediately to not shutdown the servers, as posted by @EDPS in may and furthermore you should commit to a long time financing the servers, also after the elections. Otherwise all will think you post a commitment now and forget about it after the election.

Be sure there are lot of people out there watching you, handling decentralized open source projects and your response to https://www.edps.europa.eu/press-publications/press-news/press-releases/2024/european-commissions-use-microsoft-365-infringes-data-protection-law-eu-institutions-and-bodies_en .

EU citizens are interested in your decision

@rysiek what are the concerns?

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@andresmh EU instances are being shut down on the 18th of May apparently:

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@EU_Commission FTR - an account on threads.net is NOT a solution, IMHO. The better solution is to use a minimal part of the money you spend on blockchain projects to keep the instance you are on alive. ;)

@EU_Commission Go Europe Go!

Commitment to open systems can only be shown. Talk is cheap. 🫡

@EU_Commission Better than identity portability would be finding a way to keep your current server operating for you and all the other official EU accounts using it.

You do know the monthly costs of running a single Mastodon server are a fraction of the handwaving implied by this single post, do you?

Fitik,

@EU_Commission Thank you so much, open source is the way to go

@EU_Commission This is a heartening promise.

I hope that the final setup will be a server run by one of the EU institutions, with accounts for all the different bodies and - why not - staff of the EU organs.

@EU_Commission Please create channels for all languages of the European Union. Pick up people directly instead of just posting in English.

coba,

@EU_Commission How does your announcement connect with these articles about EU institutions run by the European Date Protection Supervisor to be shut down in May?

https://netzpolitik.org/2024/mastodon-and-peertube-eu-closing-up-shop-in-fediverse-because-nobody-wants-to-run-servers/

benjaoming,

@coba @EU_Commission it's a direct response to an EDPS public announcement from earlier today, which indicated that the project with official EU Fediverse servers would end: https://www.edps.europa.eu/press-publications/press-news/press-releases/2024/edps-decentralised-social-media-pilot-end-successful-story_en

It seems to indicate that the commission will take over. Which makes sense - the project ends with a huge success, so the EU institutions should naturally want to continue the good development.

croydon,

@desperadoduck @vasto How many Mastodon servers can we finance if we stop the EU Parliament from moving between Strasbourg and Brussels?

Sorry, could absolutely not resist 😂
