The re-brand of the Fediverse as "Mastodon" has created big problems -- problems that were both predictable and preventable.
For one thing, the honeymoon period for Mastodon is over.
People aren't willing to ignore its flaws anymore because it's the one alternative to Twitter that has traction.
Now people want creature comforts.
But guess what? Because the entirety of the Fediverse is branded as "Mastodon", people are more likely to migrate to Bluesky than elsewhere on the Fediverse.
Again, I have to re-iterate this: https://calckey.social registrations are closed today.
Nor am I giving away invitation codes.
I know there's lots of demand, but we've been crushed by an on rush of registration requests over the past few days -- and we need to ensure a better experience for current https://calckey.social users.
In the meantime, here's a list of other #Calckey servers:
For the first time ever, I’m torn about whether I should stay on mastodon.social.
Being here has given me a voice I’ve never had, to talk about a topic that I feel strongly about, and I feel I’ve made the world a slightly different place.
But I also wonder if mastodon.social is becoming even more hostile to the rest of the Fediverse.
The creator of Friendica, Hubzilla, and Zot is creating a Fediverse Identity Manager. It is 70% complete.
I don’t know what this will be like exactly. But because @mike is the fellow who’s also brought nomadic identity to the Fediverse, I suspect this will be a big deal.
This makes following a conversation much easier, especially in long threads with many participants.
It's a major usability improvement, and makes Mastodon much easier to use.
https://mastodon.social has comment threading right now, and only on the native web. This feature should be available on other servers and clients with a future update.
See screenshot as an example.
How do you feel about the addition of this feature?
