I’m beginning to think the cultural chasm between Americans is NOT between super-rich/average-poor, left/right, atheist/religious, conservative/progressive, power holders/ordinary citizens.

More & more evidence shows the gap to be between those who break with absolute impunity every damn law & moral value they come across - and the rest of us who “do the right thing” 99.9% of the time because it IS the right thing, who pay taxes legitimately owed, who struggle to satisfy our debts, do our jobs, care for those dependent on us, and actually care about others’ welfare.

The differentiation seems to come down to shitty people and non-shitty people, no matter what other factors are in play.

I struggle with the shitties getting ALL of the media’s attention and weighing the rest of us down with their scummy, sleazy, evil antics, especially when (I believe) they are a minuscule minority.

bageler,

@cynblogger I think of it more as a difference in where you draw your community boundaries of who matters to you. Just yourself? immediate family? neighborhood? church? state? outside those boundaries, fuck 'em. I think the typical affinity group size is shrinking.

Management set up a form encouraging students to fink on us during next week's systemwide faculty strike in the California State University. They'll then use that to withhold our pay for the week. But that won't stop us. ✊💪

    How many cumulative programmer-hours have been utterly wasted on adding very mediocre AI features to every app imaginable which rarely actually helps you?

    I’m thinking of putting off that work-a-day feature request like “Autocomplete should work for name or email address, not just email” and instead we get months of effort for a garbage integration that you try once for novelty.

    Welcome to 2024 y’all. ;)

    @mkennedy Learning new skills/technology isn't a waste, but it should be appropriately timeboxed and prioritized so it doesn't detract from urgent business goals.

    It is 2023 and of all the silly smart devices built with IoT none of my appliances are smart. Not my dish washer, stove, washing machine or thermostat. This really should change and I am a bit surprised this nut has not been cracked. I’d love to be able to adjust the temperature with a voice assistant or an app. I'd also like to get a notification on my watch when the dishes or wash are done. I'd also like to know if a burner is still on after 10pm.

    Yes, I know there are smart thermostats and some smart appliances, but the status quo is that even in very new apartments all of these appliances and thermostats are dumb and outdated. It should be the norm that Bluetooth and WiFi is built into these devices like it is for portable speakers have now had for years.

    The EU made USB-C a requirement. Why not also do the same with thermostats and appliances? I'd install a smart thermostat so easily if it has a USB-C connector. Other appliances could require Bluetooth which is just wireless USB.

    @bageler@sfba.social avatar

    @brennansv my laundry machines are semi-smart - they can report on what they are doing but I can't start them remotely. I'd like to schedule them to run at off-peak power times, and I'd like that a lot more than the notification I get that my clothes are done. LG FWIW

    Uptick in patients with "respiratory illness" vs. confirmed over the last week. Uptick is NOT the flu. Might be useful to track this again, if other tracking measures break. Hump on the left was mostly "A" influenza... this new one, unclear. RSV also shows up on this chart when it's mostly kids. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm

    What is the Hello World of generative ?

    IE: how simple can it get? Could someone write it in a day from scratch in any language?

    bageler,
    @bageler@sfba.social avatar

    @travisfw using existing models there are tons of blog posts on how to do basic apps. Huggingface spaces have a lot of examples

    bageler,
    @bageler@sfba.social avatar

    @travisfw building a generative AI model from scratch is not a single copy/paste type thing, and still you're going to use something like pytorch or tensorflow unless you really want to build all the math from scratch too. Even 20 years ago we used prebuilt libraries for the matrix math.
