For new Mastodon users, you likely aren't seeing art and photos fully. Most instances crop images by default, and if you don't want to have to click on images to see them fully, you need to turn off the setting.

Turning off the setting makes the Mastodon experience better.

Go to your settings. Find Post Layout. Uncheck the box next to "Crop images in non-expanded posts to 16x9." Enjoy art and photos fully.

Toyota believes it could make a solid-state battery with a range of 745 miles that charges in 10 minutes.

If this actually happens, it would be amazing. I'd take an electric Subaru Crosstrek with a 750 mile range, please.

As much as I don't like Twitter, I do miss all the calendar sales that it used to drive. I'm down over a $1,000 of income that would have come from Twitter calendar sales. That sucks.

If you want a calendar, you can get it here: https://www.lulu.com/shop/bryan-hansel/northern-landscapes-calendar-2024/paperback/product-2m29j64.html?page=1&pageSize=4

Here's the camping setup that I used on my recent bikepacking trip. I'll need to make a few changes to this if I use it again.

One of the weirdest things in the US is that Supreme Court Justices only need 51 of 100 Senate votes to be put into a lifetime position — earned or not — but officers in the military need 100 of 100 votes to get a promotion that they earned and one nut job senator can prevent the promotion. That's a broken rule that should be changed.

I'd like to post a photo of a newspaper article that the local paper did on my bike ride across northern Minnesota on the Border to Border Touring Route, but when I copy the text and paste it into the alt tag, it's over 5,000 characters too long.

The article is behind a paywall online.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

The Milky Way over a lake in northern Minnesota.

It was hard to believe how calm everything was on the night I took this photo. The reflections were mind-blowing!

"Those who have never seen Superior get an inadequate, even inaccurate idea, by hearing it spoken of as a 'lake,' and to those who have sailed over its vast extent the word sounds positively ludicrous. Though its waters are fresh and crystal, Superior is a sea. It breeds storms, and rain and fogs, like the sea. It is cold in mid-summer as the Atlantic. It is wild, masterful, and dreaded as the Black Sea." - Rev. George Grant, Ocean to Ocean, 1872

I'm looking for a better fitting gravel bike. I currently have a large 2017 Salsa Fargo. It's way too big. I have one of the shortest reach handlebars on it and a really short stem and it still feels too long. The bike store insisted it was the right size.

The new bike has to be more exciting to ride but still able to do bikepacking. Lighter would be good. Space for 45-48 tires. I probably need a top tube of 55cm and shorter reach but a high stack.

Any suggestions?

I just saw this on Threads:

Everyone STOP what you are doing.

Go to O’Reilly Auto Parts website.

Type: 121G in the search bar and hit enter.

You’re welcome.

I'm posting a picture of fireworks because I like them, and I'm an American, and it's Independence Day, and I love my country, my family, my friends, and my fellow citizens.

Unlike many of the posts about the 4th that I've seen today, I'm not qualifying my love of country. I love my country.

Happy Independence Day, America!

Sometimes I'm a total geek. I'm trying to figure out how much power I'm going to need on a potential bikepacking trip.

I've added a lot of electronics to my kit since my last bike tour. All I had on that tour was a phone that I kept off, a coin battery powered bike computer, and a couple of batteries for my camera.

I'm going to carry one or two NB 10,000 battery packs and count on one or two electrical outlets at state park campgrounds.

I must not buy this new Gossamer Gear DCF Whisper tent. If I hold off long enough, their run of 100 will sell out...

... But it is so sweet!

Must not buy it.

The Idaho Stop at stop signs is now legal in Minnesota. It went into effect yesterday.

"A bicycle operator who approaches a stop sign must slow to a speed that allows for stopping before entering the intersection or the nearest crosswalk. Notwithstanding subdivision 1 and section 169.06, subdivision 4, if there is not a vehicle in the vicinity, the operator may make a turn or proceed through the intersection without stopping."

Today's ride was going well until just after this photo. My bike fell over and the derailleur hanger bent and likely the derailleur is messed up, too. I was 11 miles into the ride and well out of cell service.

Then it got interesting.

When I got cell service, I was able to call for a pickup. I was 6 miles from finishing the loop when I got picked up. I was lucky my wife was in cell range.

Lesson learned: using sticks as a kickstand is not a good idea.

I just noticed a new McMansion being built on the hill behind Grand Marais. It's the beginning of the end of the illusion that Grand Marais was surrounded by untouched wilderness. Where there's one new McMansion, there will be more, like a blight upon the landscape.

I've been trying Threads, but I deleted the app last night. It is just too frustrating that hashtags and search don't work. There's no way to find what you want to engage with. It just shows influencers and outrage influencers.

One thing that Twitter was really good at was selling calendars. Mastodon and Threads for whatever reason just don't move the calendars in the same way.

Here's my 2024 calendar of landscape shots from northern Minnesota.

I shot this with a camera that is modified to be more sensitive to the h-alpha spectrum, and that's what causes the purplish glow.
