I just noticed that after I take a picture with my Samsung android phone, it automatically edits/adjusts it - most noticeably the lighting, but probably other elements as well. I can't figure out how to turn this "feature" off. Guys I am so tired of technology.

c0dec0dec0de,

@immersfer @shauna what. Dude compares autofocus and shutter speed adjustments to straight-up just pasting in a picture of the moon or using lots of statistics to modify the image entirely!

Just bought the Middle-Earth Shadow Bundle on Steam. It includes:

  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War Expansion Pass
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Modor
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Modor GOTY Edition Upgrade

The price of each of these individual items is $112.96. But today, I’m paying C$8.99.

@atomicpoet I have the base games already, and they scratch the third-person brawler itch pretty well despite not being as fluid as the Arkham games. Also the Nemesis system was fairly amusing.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@j_bertolotti @atomicpoet I liked the added perks or feats that they got, it added a little variety (not that the Nemesis system is unique in doing this). Although over the course of a full play through the taunts get really old (again, pretty typical).

Long-durational thermal storage is coming.

The world's largest thermal storage project is underway in Finland with a capacity of 90 GWh, enough to meet the heating demands of a medium-sized city for up to a year.

@jago @janrosenow big ass cement water reservoir probably lasts a hell of a lot longer than any battery tech we have today. Industry lead-acid batteries can last a long time, but you have to provide a good bit of care and maintenance sampling and adjusting acid levels.

A while back we started to turn many of the library dependencies of systemd from regular ELF dependencies (which you can explore with tools like lddtree or readelf -d … | grep NEEDED) into dlopen() deps, in order to minimize the dep footprint of systemd. The primary reason for this was to make it easier to build small disk images without optional components, in particular for the purpose of initrds or container deployments. Recently, another reason for doing this came into focus:

Last night my boyfriend showed me a TikTok of a young woman pretending to get upset over someone putting a bunch of colored blocks -- squares, triangles, arches -- all through the same square hole. You've probably seen it.

And he was making a point about social conformity, amongst other things, but I became viscerally upset and was crying on the woman's behalf even knowing she was acting and it was kind of a dumb joke, which I felt a little embarrassed about afterwards.

Dumb RPM question: how do you "namespace" packages so that your package named foobar doesn't conflict with a distribution package named foobar?

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@cadey stick all your files in /opt and prefix your (personal or organization) name on the front.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@cadey yeah, sorry, prefix your name on the front of the package name. You can add the package to the yum/dnf installonlypkgs list to avoid uninstalling other packages with the same name, but then you’re asking for trouble later on when one of those packages updates.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

As you may remember from me talking about it once a week, the three things I most want out of a cell phone are

  1. RECTANGULAR screen with NO HOLES OR ROUNDED EDGES ON THE DISPLAY CANVAS

  2. Big bezel/bevel/whatever it's called so I can hold it without activating the touch screen

  3. Headphone jack

I search and search and even for high prices I usually cannot get these things

But the $35 carrier branded temp replacement phone I bought at the Wal-Mart by the airport?

All three

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔

@rysiek they migrate up the privilege gradient after they get some of the wrinkles ironed out, and build up the idea that it’s “okay” to inflict on people
