tl;dr — Brit. Europhile. Gay.

60, no idea how that happened. Londoner for work rather than inclination. Professionally that would be IT hardware and data centres, but currently unemployed. Will consider all reasonable offers and most unreasonable ones.

Interested in books, SF&F history, physics. Transit/transport. Architecture, especially housing. Dealing with climate change. Politically lefish and small-l liberal. Oddly traditionalist in many things.

Just an everyday story of lawyers conspiring to suppress evidence.

The recipient, Williams, is now a head of legal at the Post Office and responsible for deciding on compensation issues.

You don't have to commit a physical genocide if you can kill a people's culture.

In China, new policies on education and "national language" are eroding the basis of Tibetan culture, according to some families and activists. Increasingly, children from Tibetan-speaking families are sent to boarding school, where all teaching is in Mandarin Chinese.

Also with Uyghurs and other minorities. Beijing's imperialism is insidious, powerful and deeply destructive.

What recourse do you have when the minister for equalities sets out to discriminate against people?

Twenty-five US states (plus Washington, DC), four Australian territories, and twenty-five countries have been cut out of the jurisdictions whose gender recognition processes the UK will honour.

Jackie Higginson organised mass North Sea skinny dip to raise money for Mind but the Department for Work and Pensions said she would be stripped of her benefits because the money raised counted as her income.

Why wasn't it caught by HMRC to count against her tax credits in previous years then?

Only now that tax credits have been replaced by Universal Credit and HMRC by DWP.

Government PLUNDERING public assets.

This is outright theft of community property for the benefit of private owners.

@junesim63 of course it stinks. They can see the end coming so they have cant months to plunder anything they can. No wish to be subtle about it just holding to the belief that any incoming government would observe the conventions and not immediately undo their thefts.

Teacher get paid for teaching.

Authors get royalties on the textbooks used in teaching.

AI training "theft" is because someone is making use of another's art without recompense or permission.

BREAKING: Amazon will be banned from the European Parliament!

After weeks of mounting pressure by trade unions, civil society and Members of the European Parliament, Amazon's lobbyists will no longer be able to access its premises.

@serenissimaj Why do any lobbyists get access to the parliament?

Ban them all.

It is increasingly difficult to see this as anything other than a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice by concealing evidence conducted by Post Office senior management and perjury of some of that management in support of that.

You’d think that in 2024 you’d have an easier way to enter a true minus sign glyph (−) instead of a dash (-) in Linux.

And this isn’t just one for typography geeks either, it’s an accessibility issue.

Imagine you have a minus button in a web form. A screenreader would read it as a dash button unless you used the proper character. (The workaround, of course, is to use aria-label.)

How do you want to access it?

U+2212 is a bit clunky but with so many characters available how do you make a selection and which keystrokes do you assign them to?

I've no real idea myself. Computer keyboards are so damned inadequate for typesetting purposes.
