Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr
This is the best thread, ever! 😀

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, USA.

Pros:
Stupendous natural beauty: mountains, lakes, rivers, forests
Plenty of parks
Lots of local family farms (they don't stink!)
Year 'round outdoor activities: hiking, fishing, swimming, skiing, boating, canoeing, hunting
Moderate climate (4 distinct seasons)

Cons:
Fracking industry (natural gas)
Very very Red, politically (locally)
Extremely limited ethnic food availability (unless you count Italian 🤣)

For those losing their heads over today's actions by Judge Cannon, take a deep breath. This was always going to happen. The writing has been on the wall since Judge Cannon was drawn for the case. Getting all worked up about it is only going to make you crazy and desperate. The way we will rid ourselves of this menace is at the polls in November.

For a sober discussion on this topic this exchange today between @Teri_Kanefield and @JonChevreau is highly recommended:

Can DOJ appeal any of this nonsense?

Cold water swimming

http://archive.today/2024.05.14-150341/https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-cold-water-swimming-good-for-you/

Many of us swear by it, but the benefits are difficult to aquantify, trials relatively small and of course most people who indulge are generally fit anyway.

But we love the buzz.

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

Yes, that's key for us too: no wet suits to qualify.

We have a bit of a contest here in NEPA, to see who's the first to swim in our Ely Lake each year. For decades, it seems the elders are winning. For many years my Aunt Marty, who passed away several years ago. Now it's my twin cousins Jean & Joan, who are a year older than me. 😀

If I can get myself back into some physical condition, I might rejoin the fray. 😉

This 💩 absolutely has to stop! ⛔

Once again, I almost commented on/tooted this story when it first came out, and held off because the story I read had VERY few facts.

Turns out my instincts were dead-on correct, again! My own resolution is to be much more vocal about these atrocities going forward: I regret my earlier hesitation. The pattern is too well established! 😢

Got a text this afternoon summoning me to a gathering of the Cousins for Memorial Day at our lake (Ely Lake). I, of course, neglected to take photos (as almost always). But it was wonderful to see everyone, and I had a great time. It's neat how most of us who grew up together there during our summers of the 1960s/1970s (a large clan) have gathered again as permanent residents. And for reference, here's a photo of Ely Lake. 😀
