What Makes “Project 2025” So Dangerous

Will the Right be able to implement these radical plans? Is Trump on board? What happened to traditional conservatism? Let’s tackle some of the key questions surrounding “Project 2025”

A thread, based on my new piece:

cpurdy,
@cpurdy@mastodon.social avatar

@tzimmer_history I wish they'd stop calling fascists "Christian" and "conservative", when they are just fascists. Nothing Christian or conservative or evangelical about these people.

This country had a reasonable conservative movement, and a reasonable liberal movement, and (as always) some extremists on either end, and lots of people in the middle who didn't care.

Now, we have moderates (including Democrats) and extremists (Republicans), and basically no one is permitted to not "take a side".

you get a message in Slack with a link to the Confluence doc to prep for the meeting on Zoom, where you take notes in Notion, and track project progress on Monday and then update the Trello and you get to the end of the week and instead of doing fucking anything you've just moved bits of information around in 17 different databases and each one costs $15 a month per user...

@DemDifference It doesn't matter. As long as the choice is betweeen a traitor and Biden, I'd vote for Biden. Even if he were already dead.

Real Americans don't vote for traitors.

@lovelylovely People who vote for Trump do so precisely because he's going to (in Trump's own words) "terminate the constitution". The "we want a stupid, corrupt, and cruel dictator" movement seems oddly out of place in America, doesn't it?

We not-insane people assume that Americans around us are not insane, and every time we are sadly proven wrong.

@Popehat For anyone else who (like me) had no idea what a "CW" was: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-content-warnings-cws-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/

And to Ken, I'd post an image with some grade school Latin in it with no alt text, but I don't know how to do that? 🤷‍♂️

I'm really not sure what's worse at this point: the fact that he's a traitor, or the fact that he's a Nazi who wants to use the power of the United States government to exterminate those who do not worship him. With enthusiastic and violent followers (perhaps as many as 30% of Americans, a similar percentage as supported Hitler's rise in 1930s Germany), we need to prepare for the worst.

... "In Smalltalk, we use a symphony instead of a car horn. The conductor orchestrates the angelic music by sending a message in the form of a baton to each of the musicians, who then in concert produce a melody clean and pure enough for the ears of God himself (or perhaps herself), which then is carried as messages to the pedestrian object, who then can choose to .." and at this point we are crushed by the oncoming taxi.

One of the most conservative Democrats in the House, Jared Golden from Maine, has apologized for opposing a ban on assault weapons in the wake of the deadly shootings in his state. It shouldn’t have to take a tragedy in your own state to come around, but we welcome Rep. Golden in the fight to ban these weapons.

cpurdy,
@cpurdy@mastodon.social avatar

@georgetakei We don't even need to ban these weapons. The problem in Maine is that no license is required to buy one, and you can't get one taken away even if you are psychotic and committed to a mental institution involuntarily for threatening to kill lots of people with that same weapon. Now it looks like the No. 3 Republican in the House, Tom Emmer, is the new nominee for Speaker. This comes after McCarthy was deposed, and Scalise and Jordan both failed to get to 217 votes. Emmer asked for a roll call vote among his conference, and he looks like he is still more than 20 votes short. And look, Democrats would work with Emmer if he would agree to bring the budget and Ukrainian funding to the floor for a vote. But so far, he doesn’t want to dance with any Democrats. A bipartisan solution remains elusive, so the Speaker’s chair remains empty.

For people working on actual privacy-preserving technologies like sandboxing apps from one another and your data, it’s pretty infuriating that Google is steaming ahead with the extreme misnomer “Privacy Sandbox”.

It’s a system that tracks everything you do on your device or browser—the opposite of privacy—then gives a profile of you to any app or site that asks—the opposite of a sandbox.

It’s telling that it’s mostly adtech companies who are on board.
