Mastodon.social is perfect for me because I eat plain potato chips, drink black coffee and drive a Honda Accord

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@rootcompute The first Mastodon server I joined stopped working a month after I signed up.

I thought the best way to make sure that didn't happen to me again was to sign up on the biggest and most reliable server out there.

Reliability can be boring and that's ok.

Obligatory "Holy crap it's cold" post. -9°F, feels like -30°F (-23°C and -34°C). A good day to stay inside drinking hot chocolate and reading a or playing board games.

For my friends in the area, stay warm and be safe. (actually, that applies to anyone, not just my friends in the area)

My 10yo is about to inherit his mother's old iPhone. Does anyone have recommendations for apps or tools that can help monitor his activity? I don't know where to start with this. Honestly, it's a little early IMO, but all of his friends have phones and he's feeling left out. 😐

I admit I know NOTHING about Apple devices.

@Mrfunkedude You're always welcome by me. Feel free to join in the winter storm party here in , where, after about a foot or so of snowfall, we'll be enjoying temps around 5°F / -15°C.

Looking forward to giving the kids an opportunity to try out their new sleds before the severe cold kicks in.

In the 90's, a full grown man who was pretending to be a doctor, wrote a book called Men Are From Mars, and Women Are From Venus. The book simply stated that women are emotional, and men are rational, while writing about his downright abusive irrational treatment of his own wife, and somehow this was a best seller.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr The hosts of the podcast "If Books Could Kill" would seem to agree. Their deep dive on the topic last year is excellent.

What is the most ridiculous question or complaint that you've had from a Customer/Client?

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I had a hotel guest complain to me once about the fact that the hotel lobby wasn't on the street level. It was like he expected to wave a wand and have a work crew magically appear to relocate the lobby of a 1700 room property.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr That reminds me of the time I had to inform someone that no, she did not have a reservation at the hotel, and unfortunately I could not provide a room for her because the hotel was completely sold out for the night (overbooked, actually). Her reply, I kid you not, was "You don't read the Bible, do you?"

"Ma'am, whether or not I read the Bible has no bearing whatsoever on the fact that there are no rooms available tonight at this location."

I’ll bet the 15 Republican governors who just rejected summer food money for kids in their states all describe themselves as “pro-life.” Moments like this are why I always refer to them as “anti-abortion” instead. How is refusing to feed the poor kids you forced into existence promoting life?

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@therobburgessshow I prefer calling them "forced birth advocates." Seems more fitting.

"Pro-life" is a phrase that was created by the forced birth advocates and when media outlets use it, they're letting the forced birth advocates dictate the conversation.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@qurlyjoe @BugFajita @therobburgessshow That works too, and it's certainly applicable, but I don't see the media picking up what you're putting down. 😉

The Wager by David Grann landed on my TBR as soon as I heard about it (long before it was released) and is on Barnes & Noble's "Best Books of 2023" list. Therefore, I can't explain how excited and surprised I was to see the ebook just sitting there available at my library, ready to download. I thought I'd be in line for weeks. Nope... just, "Here you go, enjoy!" I started it in the wee hours on January 1. What a way to kick of 2024! @bookstodon

@Mrfunkedude Whoa, what a blast from the past! I remember Follow Friday from my early days on Twitter. I don't know about other experiences, but in my network it was just people tagging each other with no context... so, more or less a popularity contest.

FWIW, if I made Follow Friday lists here, you'd be on it.

At least once.

Probably with a fart joke. You know, because they're funny.

Every. Single. Damn. Time.

I’m no numerologist, but:

7.8 million ($ foreign governments paid Trump while president) divided by
11,780 (# of Georgia votes Trump illegally sought) divided by
7 (Trump bankruptcies + wives) minus
4 (# of years Trump actually elected to be President) equals
91 (# of Tump indictment counts).

Eerie.

First time I've been inspired to do a "Best Books I Read This Year" list. Here are my favorites from 2023, in no particular order:

Missoula by Jon Krakauer
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel
This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Best. Movie. Year. Ever. by Brian Raftery
Devil In The Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson

Be safe tonight, my friends. Make good choices. 😉 Happy New Year.

I tend to gravitate to set in bookstores or libraries. Once Upon A Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller by Oliver Darkshire is a bit off that mark, but still very good. The author has a dry and self-deprecating sense of humor, and I find myself chuckling at his deadpan delivery. Reminds me a bit of Hugh Grant, if Grant was forced to work with the public. It comes off as "very British" to this American (not a bad thing). @bookstodon

Remember how I posted that our car got totaled a couple weeks ago? We bought a new car partially with the insurance payout from that (well, still used, but by far the newest car we've ever owned). It's a plug-in hybrid, which is completely perfect for our rural living situation! I'm excited.

But WOW, it's the first car I've ever had that's not a beater, and it feels like driving a freaking spaceship. I think I'm going to actually have to sit down and read the owner's manual. Any tips?

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets When reading the owners manual, I recommend finding a quiet, well-lit location with few distractions. (a library might be ideal)

Maybe play some background music to help you concentrate. Highlight the sections that are vitally important.

Hey, you asked for tips...

@bookstodon Is anyone hiding out and reading today? I've started the graphic novel version of The Stand, 'cause nothing says Baby Jesus like an out of control world. 😁 What are you reading, if anything, and did anyone give you books? Did they give you the kind of books you wanted?

My librarian told me that the best week to troll donations is the week after Christmas, when everyone donates gifted books they didn't want.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@kimlockhartga Almost halfway through Song of Susannah (The Dark Tower 6), which puts me close to finishing my extended re-read of The Dark Tower series. I think I started back in January 2022.

The Dark Tower series, of course, exists in the same universe (or at least part of it) as The Stand. Waving to you in Denver from 2 Hammarskjold Plaza.👋

For the third time this year, I had to mark a book DNF. I hate doing that, but I had completely lost interest in the characters and the pace was so. damn. slow.

For me, the balm after a book like that is . Almost always reliable. In this case, I'm continuing my re-read of The Dark Tower series, so I know what I'm getting. Glad to be back with Roland's ka-tet in Song of Susannah. @bookstodon

What can Democrats realistically do between now and next November from stopping the Trump dictatorship from beginning? It seems like we're all just sleepwalking towards a cliff right now...

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@shekinahcancook @therobburgessshow You make good points, but I'm going to respectfully disagree with one of them: "Real policy position handouts with substance, not slogans, in clear simple language."

Policy needs to be able to fit on a bumper sticker or a billboard. The GOP operatives know this, and that's why they succeed.
