@Likewise I think Firestarter may have been my first SK book. (followed, IIRC by Skeleton Crew) Middle school me was thinking "It's about a little girl. How scary can it be?"

I was so very, very naive. 🤣

Great pic, BTW!

I never watched the original 1990's series, but agree that this new iteration is a solid watch. Also, it may come as a shocker to those who only know the from the live-action Fox films, but Cyclops is actually cool! 😜

@tannerman Only 10 episodes, though? I feel like the cartoons I watched as a kid (Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT, etc.) had dozens.

I hope more are in the works.

Neil Gaiman ( @neilhimself when he's posting here - which isn't often) is one of my favorite authors, and I'm usually in awe of just about everything he does. It was a cinch, then, that I picked up Unnatural Creatures, an arrangement of short stories that he picked out. So far, all of the stories are good. Surprisingly, I would say that Gaiman's own contribution is the weakest of the bunch, but still entertaining. @bookstodon

I save them for when one of my wholesome post gets a lot of attention and people start to follow me because of it.

I don’t want to give the wrong impression after all.

@RickiTarr My boys (8 & 11) just finished the live-action series and loved it. The 11yo thought he was too cool for it at first, but changed his mind ~20 minutes in.

Now they're watching the animated version.

I'm thinking it's time to move on from my Gmail account. Every day, I become more uncomfortable with the invasive tracking that is part and parcel of this "free" service.

I've had my account for about 20 years. Who else remembers when you needed an invite to sign up? Or the little counter in the corner showing how the storage space was steadily increasing? Seems so innocent now.

I'm afraid this migration is going to take some work. Feedback welcome.

Four years ago , I asked Emily St. John Mandel about her fellow author Stephen King's commentary regarding those who compare coronavirus to events in The Stand. Her reply:

"Sure. Covid-19 isn't like Station Eleven either. We must take the current
pandemic seriously, but you're unlikely to live out your final days in the
company of your fellow actors in a post-apocalyptic theatre troupe."

Working my way through The Bank by Bentley Little. I remember adding it to my TBR in 2020 because I read somewhere that Stephen King recommended it. I'm not sure if I find that surprising or fitting: The Bank is basically Needful Things, 30 years later. If I were King, I might frown at the obvious overlap, but it didn't seem to bother him. He even added a blurb.

Needful Things is MUCH better and it's not even close.

Back in the day my love for movies and my trivia knowledge combined to make me a walking IMDb. My movie watching has declined drastically since March 2013 (when Kid 1 entered the world) and it's hard for me to stay current. That won't stop me from enjoying Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears by Michael Schulman. I'm only on Chapter 2, but already loving the old-school Tinseltown intrigue. @bookstodon

The blurb on the Barnes & Noble website states "Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline’s The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement." I'm not sure I'd go that far. It's good, but I'm almost 2/3 of the way through and still waiting to see how the protagonist got in the situation she's in. I'm sure (I hope) there's a big reveal coming, but I don't get why Cline felt the need to be coy. Seems unnecessary. @bookstodon

@patrickworld Holy crap! That was my first computer. Mom brought it home from her office I think b/c it was replaced by newer models. I played Where In Time Is Carmen San Diego, learned to type, and wrote some book reports on that sweet bastard.

I've never seen a picture of one in the wild until now.

It was "portable" b/c the keyboard snapped into place over the screen and disk drive, and there was a leather handle (I shit you not) bolted to the back.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 😎

At the end of Song of Susannah (Dark Tower VI), Stephen King includes a series of diary entries, purportedly his own but there's discussion among fans if they're real or fictionalized. In one, he writes "Meanwhile, I have an idea for a novel about a lady who buys a picture in a pawnshop and then kind of falls into it."

Help me, fellow Constant Readers: was that story ever written? The plot is not familiar, but sounds like one I'd enjoy. @bookstodon

Over the past few days, I've been blocked multiple times for simple rebuttals to posts that I didn't agree with. There were no personal attacks, just attempts to provide an alternate viewpoint that may not have been considered.

It's one thing to block someone for harassment or offensive speech, but it concerns me to see people so quickly short circuit a reasonable back and forth because they don't want to hear another person's opinion. Have some thicker skin and stand by what you have to say.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@rootcompute Does "profile unavailable" mean that individual is blocking me? Asking for a friend. 😉

Having seen some of this behavior in my mentions recently, I sympathize. I was thinking about replying to someone last night with a sarcastic "I bet you're fun at parties," but what would that accomplish?

I try to apply Wheaton's Law wherever and whenever appropriate.

Remember my friends as you're putting your kids to bed after the game or worried about assholes driving home after too many: the COULD start two hours earlier, which would significantly reduce DUIs and make bedtime a lot easier on a school night. The fact that it does not is a CHOICE made by and TV executives in a boardroom. Those execs probably haven't driven a car at night or put little kids to bed in decades.
