I collect and have a few hundred now. Curiously I have found a good few recordings of chanted prayer in . Can anyone identify the text on this

These are parts of two blessings for aliyah (part of the Torah service). One is said before a bit of Torah is read and one is said after.

Both of these blessings end with the first words on your clip: NOTEYN HA-TORAH
("who gives the Torah")

Next on your sample is: BARUCH ATA ADONAI, ELOHEYNU MELECH HA-OLAM, ASHER BOCHAR (long bit I can almost get but it's not what I'm used to for the aliyah blessings) (V'DIVREI) (V'HA-) EMET

Asher bochar is from the before.

@BeebsyMcA @phonic_underground
Emet is from the one said after.

I'll get this in front of people who are better at this than me 💖

Would you kindly help circulate the post above? Both for interest, it's such a treasure - an old recording of the aliyah blessings 💖,

EDIT: All sorted, but please do share if the recording is of interest.

(Apologies to everyone I should have @ ed, it's hard to remember full mastodon ones.
Thank you!

I'm so proud that has a instance (https://monyet.cc/)! Looks like the could get a wee more popular with Malaysians. I'm getting a membership stat

@liztai I'm trying out Lemmy too. The topic-orientated framework nominally works better for me but I've not found many active topics I have much to say on, so I mostly read some of what others post.
There are lots of tech and a couple of knowledge management communities too, hopefully some will work for you as well as Malaysia things. Good luck to you and them :)

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@seanbala It will depend so much on what your interests or geography are and how they match with what's on offer. Also how active the communities you follow on other servers are.

I've started on Beehaw.org because of the kindness-focused ethos of their approach. I haven't run into anything that's a better match for me and I really wanted somewhere that felt safe.

Some of the big instances with open reg have been plagued with bot & trouble maker sign-ups. >

@liztai

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@seanbala Lemmy moderation tools are by all accounts very limited, it's still relatively early in development for this big an influx.

So unless there's an instance that's a really good match for you (like Elizabeth's opportunity to help grow a Malaysian instance), finding an instance with a moderation policy which suits you might be more important than geo or interest.

(For now, at least. Likely different as the platform grows.) My 2 p.

Evergreen PSA: Experts in ADHD please talk more to people affected by changes in estrogen levels about how this will affect their ADHD.

The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle if often extreme for emotional dysregulation and executive functioning challenges.

PMS/PMDD/Dysmenorrhea are all more highly correlated with ADHD.

Pregnancy/Post-pregnancy and Perimenopause/Menopause also often cause large scale changes to every day functioning, and PPD occurs more frequently with ADHD.

OFFERING قربان
Gold thread, indigo pigment in gum tempera & egg glair on paper. 55x55 cm.

Completed on the summer Solstice, this piece was based on a dream. The word I chose to transpose it in is qirbān. Among many Arabic words that mean "offering", this one drew me with its etymology: from the root QRB, its literal meaning is “something to bring one closer [to the Divine]”. It’s also an ecumenical word, prominent both in the Qur’an and in Christian rites.

Close-up on the golden circle, which is made from a cross-hatch pattern of gold thread stitched on paper
Close-up on the golden circle showing the threads catching the light with a metallic glint
Side view of the whole painting showing how the indigo motif almost vanishes into the background when seen from certain angles.

i finished the difficult book. i have Caitlin Moran's How To Be a Woman from the library e-system so I think I will just read that and rewatch the happy bits of a Cdrama this week and not going to say the rest ptui ptui ptui

was pleased to finally get myself sorted for access to the e-book system used by the public library (council closed the local branch so borrowing and returning physical books involves expensive buses). it's very mass market-orientated so it's been frustrating. 2nd book from it is sad and difficult, although in different ways from the 1st.
i believe strongly in supporting public libraries but it's gotten so difficult.

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

[edit: mine's about getting kids interested in data science at school]

Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?

emmaaum,

@solderandchaos You can follow groups and hashtags as well as people's accounts. They can be good for finding more to follow.

Yes, he took over the business Twitter acct from me and began using it for his own research interests, which admittedly made it much more active. ;-D

Twitter getting a limit on how much one can scroll might be its death-knell? People keep saying that but like, one of the best things about the platform was that you didn't have any limits on your interactions. I've never heard of such a stupid thing.

Il trovatore is a fantastic work musically. There's no filler musically, just brief moments to catch the breath before it rollicks on into the next gem of a duet or aria or chorus.

i think for my next / , i'm going to watch the happy bits of one i've seen already. cause when the happy ones go sad, they go really sad and i think i've learned enough to know there won't be many exceptions (if any) to this and i need a break from those lows. still better than the high stress of UK/European series.
finish the library book first though. cause i'm not doing well with two stories at a time.

One of the things the START-UP does well and, I am sure, very intentionally, is demonstrating how capitalism disincentivizes developing technology solutions that actually help people with survival needs, because doing that doesn’t really generate revenue/profit.

Like, the team in the titular start-up business comes up with brilliant solutions for assistive technology but it’s not something they can turn into a viable business model. 1/2

@liztai From the article: "Comedies and dramas, which typically require an understanding of more subtle aspects of American life, are understandably less appealing to foreign audiences."
The condescension in that 🤯
Doesn't even consider the possibility that what they make themselves in those genres is just better.

Anyway, thank you once again for opening up this whole other wonderful sprawling complicated world of story to me 💖

Advanced search on the MyDramaList site lets you search by genres, combinations of genres, and other criteria (or double click to exclude some). It's really helpful to getting started. There's a LOT of Chinese drama with supernatural elements.

(This is the page I use to get to advanced search, it's down a bit on the right
