It’s unconscionable to keep using the SAT. New data show in stunning detail that it does little more than measure family wealth. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/10/23/upshot/sat-inequality.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Im not one for buying generational generalizations (apparently, “but professor, this is all bullshit” wasn’t the right answer in my law school professionalism class on “how to work with boomers” day) - but is there a group of people that don’t suck with scheduling these days? I don’t hang with many 40+ year olds but judging by my multiple DND groups, organizing 20-30-something year olds is an exercise in herding cats.

NPC Creation Complexity

Confession time: I am not overly enamored of "rules-lite" RPG systems. As long as the system is coherent and well-thought out, I prefer it when the system has rules for all sorts of things - from tactical combat to running chases to social encounters to falling damage and so forth. I like GURPS, I like D&D5E, I like Pathfinder...

Some of the most harmful impacts from generative AI TODAY is the harm being done to students (disproportionately hurting non-native-english speakers) by "AI Detectors" that don't/can't/will never be able to do what it says on the tin. I'm much more concerned about instructors and educators hurting students with generative AI than I am about students "cheating".

q: I was surprised to learn that data portability isn’t a given on - something I assumed was intrinsic to the fediverse experience. Is any different? This makes migration in the a much harder question for folks who, at least on mastodon, are able to just jump in and not worry about tying themselves to any instance in particular.

emoryr,
@emoryr@techpolicy.social avatar

@devnull that is supremely disappointing. Data portability is a killer app for mastodon, I’d consider essential for a decentralized service imo. That… hm. Dang.

Ten years ago I was shaken to my core by the revelations. Started studying for the LSAT, applied to law school and set my sights westward to work with the tech advocates at @eff . Not everything went perfectly to plan, but today I’m policy counsel for a consumer privacy nonprofit , sponsoring a bill (S.B. 362) that will let you delete your information from hundreds of data brokers at once - and we’ve just made it through the CA Senate and are heading to the Assembly. Hell yeah.

I am feeling fortunate beyond number to be able to come back to this thread to report that SB 362, The Ca Delete Act, has just been signed by the governor. By far the most rewarding most exciting most superlative anything I’ve experienced in my career. Absolutely buzzing.

We went up against some of the wealthiest tech cos out there. Literally dozens of full time and contract lobbyists. Multiple astroturfing and straight-up lie campaigns. Mobile billboards! But we beat them. Change is a’coming.
