Not a lot to say about myself. Worked as GP in valleys, then public health something to do with data of health events. Ignored mainly, you're advised to do the same. Meanwhile if you fancy seeing what I'm thinking this is quite a good place happy to be corrected as I don't know as much as I think I do. It's a common male fault. 🤣

Maternity care is in crisis:

Zoe Williams concludes:

'It’s not a story of one bad apple, or one bad chief executive, or one bad institutional culture, or one underprivileged area. In 2022, 80 of the country’s 193 maternity units were deemed unsafe by the Care Quality Commission. That definitely wasn’t the austerity promise, not even in the small print: creating a country not safe to give birth in'!

One more dimensions of the Tories wrecking of the NHS

@ChrisMayLA6 it's also part of the tick box approach healthcare. If you train professionals to act as providers of care/advice to individuals tailored their needs, but then insist that they deliver (bog) standard care aimed at a mythical Mean patient, then as day follows night the probability that any person receive excellent care is very close to zero. So costs rise as outcomes deteriorate.
Healthcare is complex and humans keep it safe, if permitted to; procedures may prevent them doing that.

@cstross my small town has a thriving high street umpteen coffee shops, plus Fromagerie, an ice cream parlour and numerous restaurants, and a greengrocer and three butchers, two bakers! Plus the usual chains. We walk to town most days, to see what's going on. Unfortunately housing is expensive so young people are driven away. Would love to see housing drop in price. But I'm old and decrepit so no one cares what I thin. 😆

Scientist and animal/human health workers are worried, but the public is told ‘nothing to see, nothing to worry about, move on’.

The massive power of agribusiness is threatening the world we live in and also (for those who don't really care), our health by incubating new and dangerous illnesses.

epistatacadam,

@Wen I expect their intensive inhumane feedlot system of mass produced beef is almost certain to reduce animal health and the density of the 'herds' almost guarantees any infections will pass swiftly through the herd.
And their given hormone supplements to grow faster.
Why anyone thinks US beef is good, totally baffles me. The pollution it causes is enormous. Free ranging big herbivores are an environmental plus, but force fed dense collections are a disaster waiting to happen.

Tomorrow morning the Home Office starts to round up the migrants they expect to try to send to Rwanda... I saw round up, but actually they're expecting to pick up (some of) their victims when they attend regular/scheduled meetings with officials.

These currently 'free' migrants will then be detained ahead of flights to Rwanda.

(again) if the money spent on this viscous & inhumane policy was spent on integrating migrants into British society, it would be much more cost effective!

@ChrisMayLA6 and beneficial to us all. This policy has no merit at all. It costs us tax payers plenty, for which we see no short term or long term benefits. Spending the same to integrate them all would improve public services, and give us both financial and social benefits of unimaginable value. It's an evil policy, born of gross stupidity, and totally without merit.

Fascinating to hear Sir John Bell saying we needed to invent a new branch of the NHS to undertake Community health care.
Funny he forgot to mention that when founded, in 1948 the NHS was a three legged stool, the hospitals (secondary+ care), Primary care, AND community care. The original design was sound, but the focus moved from looking after people, to providing treatment for illnesses, has led to the neglect of both Community care, almost gone now, & Primary care, on it's knees.

Why when the NHS is in crisis does the 'solution' seem to be increased private healthcare, but when the railways hit crisis point, it was finally the state that had to step in...

The solution to constrained funding is not to introduce more suppliers who by their very market character need to make a surplus out of any available funding....

And yes, in Wes' terms... if saying that makes me a middle-class Leftie - then so be it!

@ChrisMayLA6 when will politicians finally realise that a) the staff working in private providers were trained by the NHS and can only do more for private providers if they reduce their NHS work
& b) the policy of reducing beds since 1990, has steadily increased the chance of overload and hence long waits.
    c) Speeding up discharge will make next to no difference as the main bottleneck is getting most patients in not getting them out.

@DrALJONES exactly what US policy was that led to My Lai, which explains why US can find no evidence of breaches of humanitarian law, despite the deliberate repeated attack in space and time on aid workers. They're dead so by definition they must have been terrorists although we knew when they were alive they were aid workers, who helped supply 60% of the food aid in Gaza, so frustrating Israeli policy of starving the population.
Seems to have had the desired effect, stopped that food input.

@DrALJONES my memory is the source of My Lai based on the report into the massacre there, essentially the US operated kill zones in which everyone inside was considered a Vietnam Cong operative or supporter. Here's the Wikipedia entry https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_massacre
"everyone there is VC or VC supporter" is quoted under operation.
The Harrez article is my source for the current Israeli approach.
As then it seems a few soldiers are holding to a higher moral principle & quietly telling the truth.

In an over-stretched system, where the internal market has reduced procedures & patients to economic data (outputs/efficiency etc.) is it any wonder that people do not feel satisfied?

Improving empathy may be the answer, but the lack of empathy is not only a personal issue for & , it has been engineering into the NHS by 'reforms'

It's very hard, if not impossible, to be empathetic when you're exhausted and there are six more people waiting for your attention. All you really want to do is get even 10 minutes sleep. We at least had rooms with beds to sleep in and a mess to try to unwind in. Today's doctors have neither, & are bottom of the pecking order in hospitals, PAs are afforded greater respect, IME.

He overlooked as did his questioner, that HMG has announced it is going to cut taxes for the rich (and has relaxed bonus caps for the best paid, whilst cutting low pay & benefits). Perhaps, the billions to be spent on the rich, could be invested in children instead. That is much more likely to result in improvement in Britain than giving people with too much money, even more.

I wonder when a Welsh hospital will be built so that the easiest way to get to outpatients and for staff to work, will be by rail or bus? Currently they seem to be intent on doing the same as at the Heath. Large car parks, impossible by public transport, and clogged roads. No vision for the future. Clearly emergency transport will need to be door to door, but most people do not arrive by ambulance.... And even in emergencies a surprising number arrive by other routes. Eg. Clapham train crash.
