@mobilizon changes ownership away from Framasoft, but development will continue
An overview of the current work on cross-app podcasts comments with #activitypub
Mastodon.social 'knows' about some 2800 Threads accounts, indicating that the amount of people on Threads who have turned on federation is in the couple of thousands.
Threads has joined the fediverse in an open beta, allowing people from US, Canada and Japan to opt-in to having their Threads post be visible in the fediverse
@fediforum happened this week, with a ton of great demos, a large variety of sessions, and multiple calls and initiatives for more collaboration across the fediverse
The fediverse continues its trend of rebuilding popular large platforms, but with #activitypub. This week two projects were announced to be in development:
Loops, a platform for short-form video
Ibis, a federated version of Wikipedia
also a fascinating paper about the hashtag #asstodon, and much more news this week.
the fediverse gets hit with a persistent spam wave, which indicates the current vulnerabilities in the network to such an attack.
Bluesky opens up for federation, allowing 3p Personal Data Servers to connect to the network. This starts a new period of experimentation and new projects on the network, which will likely impact the AP-fediverse in a variety of ways that are not yet clear
Bluesky has announced that today they have started with federation, allowing anyone to host their own data on the #bluesky network.
In a blog post they announced that anyone can now host their own PDS, framing it as a way to control your own data, and also explaining how it differs from Mastodon.
Bluesky describes it as an 'early access of federation for self-hosters'.
For the last time, Jack did not invent Bluesky, he doesn't own it, he doesn't have control over it, he doesn't run it, and he's not even active over there, after finding out that most people there hate him.
It's NOSTR that's the pro-crypto network. The bluesky developers have been very adamant against incorporating web3/crypto.
Nothing was remotely "made in secret". ATProto has been open for a very long time
Discourse around a potential bridge between the fediverse and #bluesky. The proposed bridge between the networks featured opt-out mechanism, but after an intense backlash by the community, changes towards a more opt-in nature are being made.
Even if I take them at face value, #ActivityPub exists, is widely adopted already, open source, and supported by @w3c. That is not to say that ActivityPub has no problems but there are many hands trying to make it better. I think it boils down to the AT Protocol people wanting to say "My Protocol is Better than Your Protocol!" I also feel (again not a techie) that there is some puzzling block-chainy stuff in the logic of AT Protocol.
@SymbolicCity@fediversereport@theverge@davidpierce I see what you mean but your point is exactly why I liked it as well. I didn't join Mastodon because I was a Twitter user but I was really intrigued by the idea of the Fediverse and am consistently surprised by its versatility across platforms.
New: #Bluesky opens network, making it a massive hit in Japan
Bluesky's network grew by 50% in the last two days, adding 1.5million accounts since dropping the invite codes. The surge of popularity and interest seems to come mainly from Japan, with large popular Japanese accounts coming over.
Bluesky also talks more about their plans to make money, and how they will start with federation this month. With that, bridges to the #fediverse become possible.
Small note: if you check feeds like 'Discovery' and wonder what the hell I'm talking about with all these Japanese posts: make sure that all languages are checked in your settings. AFAIK if you are not Japanese it is most likely turned off by default, making it that you don't see posts in Japanese.
Starting today, Bluesky will not require invite codes anymore and anyone can join the network. Later this month, the team will roll out an "experimental early version of federation", allowing other people to run their own 'Personal Data Server' (PDS).
The #Lemmy developers host an AMA, talking about decentralisation, platform identity and a roadmap
@nodebb talks about how they are thinking about what federating forums actually means, and how their implementation of #ActivityPub will look like
Project Tapestry by @Iconfactory is a Kickstarter to build an App that gives you a single chronological feed from a variety of sources, such as #mastodon, #bluesky and #rss
I'll be at #FOSDEM this weekend! Would love to chat with anyone who is involved with fediverse stuff in some capacity, so hit me up here or @laurenshof if you want to meet up for a coffee or a chat.
@fediversereport@laurenshof oh damn! I was thinking about going but if I would have known you were gonna be there I might have tried a little harder. I don't think I can make it now
