The Lemmy developers held another AMA this week (https://lemmy.ml/post/11023519 ), and in this article I go over some of the answers that stood out to me. They gave answers about platform identity, why decentralisation matters for a healthy community, more details about their roadmap and funding, as well as a whole lot more.
Realistically speaking, what are the chances that Threads' implementation of QTs will influence Mastodon's decision around it and kinda strong arm them into adding them?
I know gargron has indicated that he's not opposed to them so much (and maybe they're on the road map). But the point here is to ask what potential influence Threads can influence over fediverse platforms just by virtue of its size.
While "Relay" sounds better as terminology, as a concept it is a bit downplaying to notion of a BGS, which - to my understanding - is the high-scale component that can be best served by large corporations, and also where having social networking graphs, is a #SurveillanceCapitalism dream.
The massive response to the launch of RSS Parrot, a new tool which allows you to view RSS feeds in your fediverse account, showcases the large demand for better integration of the fediverse with RSS
With a bonus shoutout for all the scuba divers on the fediverse: diveDB is a web app that allows scuba divers to track their dives. The site has now added ActivityPub support, so you can follow all your favourite scuba divers (?) directly from your fediverse app
In this article I take a look at @Framasoft plans for 2024 for PeerTube, with some new information from the AMA from recently as well. Learn more about what makes #PeerTube an alternative, not a rival, to Big Tech, their plans for a mobile app, redesign, and more!
The final weekly update for the year. Thank you all so much for all the support this year, it has been amazing to see the project grow with so much community support!
This update contains:
Flipboard federation
Peertube 2024 plans
lots of quick news links
I'll be offline for the next week to reset and take a break. Fediverse Report will be back next year. Stay tuned, and happy holidays!
New: Flipping the Federation Switch: Flipboard joins the fediverse
#Flipboard has joined the fediverse this week, with the first selection of Flipboard accounts now fully interacting with the #fediverse. I spoke with @mike to learn more.
New: How Newsmast is building curated news and communities on the #fediverse
The UK charity @newsmast has build a fediverse-powered platform for sharing curated news and communities. I spoke with Newsmast to hear their story and perspective. Can recommend checking them out, and give Newsmast a try.
Thank you to all of you who joined the #PeerTubeAMA livestream, this was great fun. Great to see so many people tune in and ask all these questions, thanks a lot!
@fediversereport Thanks a lot Lauren for that AMA session, it was greatly done! For those that were in the chat, discussing visibility / reach, a PeerTube user, @ajroach42 contributed a comprehensive community guide to "local TV", that I really enjoyed, and thought would be a nice addition to what was said: https://communitymedia.network/
