I don't get the genre of T-shirts and bumper stickers that are Wives proud of their husband's jobs.

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I don't either. What about husbands doing the same.."Proud husband of a doctor" "Proud husband of a housewife"?

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr And what about this one, then: "Proud spouse of a feminist"? That's pretty non-work.

The Florida Supreme Court has overturned the 6 week abortion law and at the same time, allowed a constitutional amendment enshrining abortion to go to the voters.
I hope to god the women just swamp this so the Republicans will drown.

Nothing?

Anything over 0 is true speculation because Trump Media lost $58 m in 2023:

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@LeftistLawyer Modern economics is literally making the justification for slavery and poverty at the expense of human capital for the few who own property and have power.
A good example of that was the recent (yesterday) article the NY Times did on the sugar fields of India and how Coke & Pepsi, as well as the Indian government, prove this theory:

It's called corruption and he's in line for a SC seat if Trump wins?

Can someone please explain why, on a planet with 5 billion too many people and , declining birthrates are a problem?

I'm at a loss.

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@LeftistLawyer Because the governments, billionaires and corporations need more bodies to sell more products to-and you will find that nobody in those three areas gives a shit about climate change and they're the ones denying/encouraging it. They're actually destroying the world for their ends but blaming us for not having enough babies to use in doing it.

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kolya @LeftistLawyer Which is why the rise of the anti-abortionists, christian nationalism is also all tied into this conversation of how many people need to have babies. American women are the main target because they're the most visible of 'women's lib' and thus the easiest one to attack with laws that keep their wombs and lives in cages. Also no divorce allowed, etc. All are on the agenda. Women are chattel.

While I feel for the people involved, isn't it time to get rid of the monarchy altogether? It's a vestige of a bygone time when empires were standard. Now all the royals do is open health care centers and make speeches about nothing at all. They can be dispensed with-they have enough money to live off. They don't need any public money. They're the 1%.

Sometimes something is so stupid you just want bang your head on something.

At one point, someone rightly said, Hey, we are giving the police an awful lot of power, they should probably have some kind of oversight.

The police: Sure, we'll get right on that, we'll create Internal Affairs.

The people: Oh, yeah good idea, who is going to run that?

The police: Ummm...well, us.

The people: Hey, that's probably not enough, you can't really police yourselves!

The police: Okay fine, you can make a Citizen Overwatch Committee.

The people: That's sounds great! How much money will we get to run this, and what kind of power will we have?

The police: Ohhh uhh, you're going to have to get volunteers, and you can make suggestions... to the most powerful, and well protected union in the world.

The people: You're at least going to enthusiastically support other people's rights to a strong working Union, right?

The police: Well, the thing is...

Silly Story Time:

My husband has always been scared of spiders. If a spider needed removed I would be the one to deal with it, as I've always admired their work. For whatever reason, spiders love our Bathroom, and there always seems to be one or two in there no matter what hubs has tried to keep them out. So, I started naming them, I called one Henry, and I told hubs that he was really social, because every time you'd sit down on the toliet, he would pop out of his hole and just sit by your feet until you were done, then he'd crawl back. Another one would crawl out by the wall when you'd shower, and I told him that was Henry's wife Helena, and she was kind of a pervert, because she liked seeing people naked, but Henry didn't mind, because he liked them freaky. Whenever we would come out of the bathroom, we started giving updates about what Henry and Helena were up to. One day they disappeared, and we were both kind of sad, but last night hubs comes out of the bathroom, and says, Come look! He points to the wall by the toliet, and there is a little spider, and he says, Henry, he had a son! We are very excited about this development!

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I have/had:

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr My parents did not totally suck, but they weren't great-mother had a lot of issues, Dad took over in many ways, including cooking. We felt loved in spite of it all, and we knew we were lucky that my father did not 'cut and run' even if he had a damn good reason. He was an honorable man who did not desert his family just because he could. Thank goodness for that!

I almost died out there yesterday because somebody needed chicken fingers RIGHT THE HELL NOW.

This big pickup crossed two travel lanes from the left then stopped sideways in front of me when they couldn't get into the right turn lane bc other cars were in it.

Glad my habits of careful driving and paying attention on the road paid off.

I drive with the assumption that everyone else is likely to do spectacularly stupid things, and, well, someone did.

It could have been really bad. ☹️

@arisummerland @cavyherd @thepoliticalcat @isotope239 Interesting discussion. I tested my ability to plan just the last 24 hours-and I was amazed that I put a complicated travel itinerary together that looks workable and good. I've never done this before, and I'll be traveling alone for the first time in my life at 69 to Alaska and back again to Maine. So I'm reassured that my executive functioning is good. I'm sorry when it is affected by outside influences and disease.

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@arisummerland @isotope239 @cavyherd @thepoliticalcat i have written up a preliminary itinerary so that I remember what days I'm supposed to be traveling-I haven't even bought any tickets yet-the Alaska Ferry isn't taking advanced reservations yet, either. May will be the time when I do all the billing and such. My poor credit cards will be very tired..

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@isotope239 @arisummerland @cavyherd @thepoliticalcat Yup..but: this is after having cleared the decks of those 3 credit cards from over $ 7,000 worth of charges over 4 years. By myself. On my job and widow's benefits. I had to become very stringent with my money for this to happen. Good exercise in frugality and planning. PS-it only got this way because my husband chose not to tell me about it. I found out after he died...quite a shock. No money, either.

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@cavyherd @isotope239 @arisummerland @thepoliticalcat I hope not-because I was not blameless in that problem. I spent some of it, but I should have asked questions, of course. Being poor sucks. However, he did have the sense to keep the accounts in MY name so that I could restore my own credit. I was just foolish to let it get that bad. I hated credit cards until i could get my cards cleaned. he was a spendthrift, and I was clueless about it. Not all the bad guy..

fmhilton,
@fmhilton@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@cavyherd @isotope239 @arisummerland @thepoliticalcat Oh, I had a bank account-I just didn't have any money.As I said, being poor is a not a good lifestyle. Many reasons for it, nothing inherently sinful or bad about about it. Just the way life works. But my finances today are 100% improved. I control them, nobody else. there's a lesson in there...
