It wasn't yet 08:00 when I started drowning in articles explaining thunder and other meteorological phenomena, prompted by a question from my son while he was having breakfast, about whether thunder was positively or negatively charged.
This day is lost, I'm telling you.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@gharbeia IIRC the top and bottom of the cloud become oppositely charged as convection circulates water droplets, and sometimes hailstones up and down within the cloud. Can't remember which is positive or negative.

Lightening strikes the ground from the base of the cloud, or from one part of the cloud to another area with opposing charge.

Thunder is the rush of air returning to the space it vacated due to the heat of the lightning current ionising the air.

That's remembered from school so 🤷‍♂️

I have had a new laptop for a day, and it's shit-hot!

Clearly aimed at gamers but the best spec I could find for development.

I went #Lenovo #Legion9 (max), rather than #Dell for the first time because the spec, and the fact my last Dell is faulty after 6 years (whereas my previous 15yr Dell is still perfect).

Lenovo support is poor, outsourced, unhelpful and knows less than I do.

Windows 11 was the only option, so no Ubuntu drivers. But ok, except the trackpad so far, USB devices on order.

Yes, refurbs can be excellent value if they meet your needs/wants.

I still have an working ThinkPad T41 refurb that I put Bodhi Linux on.

The #Windows11 setup yesterday shows me everything I've heard and abhorred about #Windows lately. Even after configuring for #privacy #Edge was sending all my clicks home and making this shit-hot laptop sluggish!

Pretty shocking actually. Enter Firefox and Brave [phew].

I'm so thankful for #Linux.

@schmerg I only use it for build and test now for the poor souls who are still in Windows hell.

Chancellor wants to build $1tn 'British Microsoft'

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt plans to raise a homegrown tech titan, but does the UK's investment landscape support that lofty ambition?

I just took delivery of a laptop that came with 11.

After going through setup I felt abused and violated.

Then, doing anything on this top of the range machine was slow, and despite my answering 'privacy' to every option, it appears that every click in Edge is being sent back to Microsoft, slowing the fastest machine I've ever used.

Having installed Ubuntu 24 side by side makes this even more apparent. (I still want for testing).

I pity those who have to use it.

Get out!

🇬🇧 “Demand [for business parks] has waned from occupiers because they need to go back into towns and city centres in order to compete for the employees,” the boss of one commercial property group said. “People don’t want to work in business parks. @1br0wn "choice of ..." 🤔

It's an interesting point. I worked most of my career on two 'business' parks, but they really were parks, not just in name. There were places for picnics on the grass, a volleyball net, large ponds to walk around etc. 'Country park' would be a better description for both. That was how they competed for us then.

What happens when they no longer need to compete? [Rhetorical]

Wasted hours setting up a Windows VM to debug a Windows terminal issue.

Windows 11 just refused to finish the setup…

Windows 10 needed multiple restarts to install all the ADs and spyware…

Then I had to install Git using the browser and click next 10 times… Just to experience that Git didn't work as I would expect. Some problem with linking probably…

I almost forgot how much Windows sucks.

If you are a developer and don't want to use Linux: Please, at least use WSL 🙃

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@mo8it I am building a demo using Tauri which has both cli and GUI UIs depending on the parameters you start it with.

Windows doesn't cater for that.

On Windows an executable is supposed to be one or the other, so if your app is marked as gui don't expect its outout to go to the terminal. And if you force it to, don't expect it to stop accepting input from the user. And if you want to stop that, you will accept it spawning a terminal that will close on exit.

It's like MS don't use Windows.

I was 'Compware' during that period and as a hobby/sideline business wrote and sold QL software, resold software and hardware, and probably saw you at the early computer shows in London or Cambridge. As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a #Mastodon instance up and running that stores media on #IPFS! It was an interesting learning experience.

I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.

This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@deadsuperhero
I expect more of this, not just re #IPFS but as #p2p systems are happening, storage models will change for the better. #Autonomi is the project I'm most familiar with and they have already talked about this and have partners ready to upload their data. They are not yet revealed, but I wouldn't be surprised if replacing AWS was in there.

I'm working on a demo myself in the area of web publishing and browsing, and am very excited about this whole area, so I wish you luck.

One answer to that perennial problem is: don't. Start building with p2p as soon as you can and support those who are building platforms you might use in future, such as .

Once again I get foiled by switching languages. :blobcatfacepalm2:

In Javascript, you have to compare strings with ===, not ==, or else you'll run into type coercion problems, because Javascript thinks 1 == "1" is a totally fine thing to be true. (it's not)

But in Kotlin, === compares identity not equality for strings. But in the JVM, string values are aggressively cached, so === actually does what you want most of the time. Unless your strings come from weird places, like JNI code. Then you get awful non-deterministic behavior that's incredibly hard to debug, but it totally goes away when you use the correct comparison operator == for strings.

sigh I'm not really as good at this whole programming thing as I should be by now.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@cuchaz
Programming is hard.

A skill is choosing systems and tools that make it easier and making meta choices to enable you to maximise your agency in those choices.

I remember the pain I endured learning a decade ago, then looking at [shudder] and hmm.

Then the pleasure that followed learning to use and . You'd have a hard time getting me to use anything else now. Not happening.

My debut Rust project is now part of debian / Ubuntu.

"===" 🤣

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@cuchaz
I've used it previously in the browser and found it worked well.

Since then it's much easier and my demo uses Tauri + Svelte + Rust to target desktop and mobile. My first dabbling with Android so it will be an interesting test.

What things are you waiting for or think aren't ready?

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@dngrs there you go, you didn't even last to the end of the sentence! 😆

Try Svelte and you'll never ask anyone that again.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@cuchaz
Of course it depends on what you value and are trying to achieve, and if what you have works there's less need to change that.

I like new tech, and I like to both learn to use it and apply it, so that creates the opposite bias.

For what I was trying to do though, and indeed for my current demo, I did need WASM (Rust in browser), so it's not just about my preferences. WASM opens lots of possibilities so it is worth evaluating IMO.

Trying it out will help decide when/where to use it.

@nilesh I've been using Ubuntu since v16 and never knew I could install .deb packages with the GUI until, now when I can't 🤷‍♂️ (as I am on 24).

I guess before long I'll be back on Debian.

The good thing is that we can easily leave #Ubuntu behind. Windows and Mac are much harder for people to leave.

I have a new laptop on the way and was forced to accept Windows on it. So maybe instead of Ubuntu I'll install #Debian Mint 🤔
