This could be the connection between Ehlers-Danlos and neurodivergence. (People with EDS, like me, are 7 times as likely to be autistic and 5 times as likely to have ADHD -- also like me.)

I invented my first algorithm in 3rd grade. I taught myself to program at 12. I coded my first neural network at age 16. I was a National Merit Scholar. I have a patent for an application of machine learning to natural language processing. ML has been my special interest for 30 years, and my career for 10. I've been programming for even longer, 33 years on my own time and and 20 in the workplace.

But I don't have a degree, due to mental health and an undiagnosed invisible disability. So I'm not good enough to hire.

Anybody working on a dev project that needs to be deployed on the cloud? The job market is dry right now and they all want cloud experience. I'd be interested in lending a hand on a cloud project to get that experience.

If the value of a person's life comes from being self-supporting or a productive member of society, then every young child, senile grandparent, seriously ill patient, and disabled person currently incapable of work...is worthless. And we all know that's not true. Hell, every one of us will spend time in at least one of those categories. Are we all worthless?

The work we do having any value at all implies there's already a person on the receiving end who matters before any work is done. Don't let them lie to you and tell you that you don't matter if you can't support yourself or be productive. Work matters because people matter, not the other way around.

Pay a person for their work hours, and they will work for hours.

News sites are dying because they don't understand the value of product they are delivering anymore. They think they can charge people to reveal secrets, but we can just get the news elsewhere. What's hard to come by isn't the information itself, but its reliability.

So much for not having a full blown panic attack today.

In addition to being panicky and in tears, I am also furious at the same time. There is no GD reason that a crown crumbling should put my kids at risk for not eating. I fucking hate how our society operates. This is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet, but any little misstep and the floor just drops out. I need a front tooth to get hired. I need insurance to get a front tooth. I need a job to have insurance. So I have to take a big chunk of the small amount of savings I have left in order to pay for a tooth on the hope that I'll get hired despite having an even smaller time window to find a job in. Fuck your private jets and mansions and yachts, you privileged fucks.

Sure, recruiter person, I'll just fabricate experience and put it on my resume because you asked me to... /s

I don't understand these people. Is this a normal thing to ask someone to do? Like, I already said my experience with this particular skill is minimal, so why ask me to put "3 to 4 points" on my resume specifically mentioning it? I'm so not comfortable with that.

I have run out of severance and now I'm running out of savings. It's do or die now, folks. Job offers, job leads, job hunting advice...please send them all my way, and/or boost for reach. Freelancing is on the table, too. Details about me and what I'm looking for, to follow.

Requirements to put in a job description to discourage or filter out autistic people:

  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Strong people skills
  • Good culture fit
  • Multitasking
  • A fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Bachelor's degree or better

I see these things and think you don't want my >30 years of programming and machine learning experience, or my problem-solving skills and comprehensive knowledge that had people mistaking me for one of the team's PhDs, or my solutions that have proven patent-worthy. Your loss.

Groups of people aren't infected with guilt or blame just because there are individual bad people numbered among them. We can define groups however we like. So we can literally invent groups that include any combination of people. How does it ever make sense to blame innocent people for evil acts they didn't commit, just because they sit next to someone awful in a category that only exists because we made it up?

Being hyper-abled and disabled are not mutually exclusive. That's why there are terms for people who exist at both ends of the ability/disability spectrum at the same time. "Twice exceptional", "idiot savant", "splinter skills", "spiky skill profile"... These are a few of the terms invented specifically to describe such a pattern. Autistic people, in particular, are likely to fit this pattern.

What if moderation were partially decoupled from server administration in the fediverse? What if you could choose one or more moderators or blocklists to "subscribe" to, and then make your own exceptions about specific users or servers to block or allow? Maybe "reports" could be compiled into user-specific block lists, which could then be voluntarily aggregated. Kind of a federated approach to moderation itself...

It seems like this would be a better system, and also would resolve a lot of debate about moderation and defederation up front.

@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

Calling someone an idiot or claiming there is a widespread learning disability that makes most people idiots is pretty ableist. If they're wrong, or they're jerks, that's probably the thing you should focus your commentary on.

Idiot is a slur that implies some degree of learning, intellectual, or developmental disability, and is often used to other non-disabled people by painting them as having such a disability. This cements the mental habit of treating such a disability as a form of inferiority, and of dismissing the views of those who are perceived as having such a disability. You are tearing down a whole group of marginalized people who are innocent bystanders when you use a word for them as an insult for others.

It's the slightly less offensive sibling of the r word. Please don't use it. Focus on behaviors, not abilities.

Defending yourself from genocide does not imply committing a much greater one. Stop the hate. You will have to live with what you've done. Your children will have to live with what you've done. Your grandchildren will have to live with what you've done. That's the legacy of genocide, whether it was committed by instigators or in retaliation. A part if you and yours will die with those you hate so much.

I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but if you know someone who has a chronic health problem, and they mention it to you, that's not an invitation to suggest 20 different quick fixes. Odds are, they've already tried all of them and about 200 more you've never even heard of. It takes energy to swat down superfluous suggestions, and that's something chronically ill folks are often short on. Don't add to it. If we want advice or troubleshooting, we will ask directly.
