My guess as to why there are so many mentally ill people in Gotham:

The Joker and Harley Quinn fall into a giant open vat of chemicals in a factory that make them "crazy". So, I'm assuming working by the fumes of said open vat of chemicals for a long period of time would have a similar effect. All of Gotham problems have to do with poverty and infrastructure as usual.

I certainly can't speak for all movies, but I think that in at least some cases (probably the best cases) that distance is intended to symbolize more than just wealth.

Beyond that: easy short-hand? Really driving home the point?

@RickiTarr It does make me wonder though: are there good examples of a similar energy being brought to a scene with a different setting? Say, two brothers eating hot pockets on paper plates on opposing ends of the coffee table? Shot in a way that really exaggerates that distance.

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

@RickiTarr This is definitely a thing. I've noticed it most with my own mother, but also her sisters. Often it just comes in the form of detailing a story of whatever difficulty they are having, and the expectation is that the listener should volunteer to help.

@RickiTarr I did point it out to her once and told her that if she needs my help with something, she needs to just ask because I'm not good at picking up these sorts of social cues.

    Last month I bought some Sennheiser momentum 4 headphones. Today one ear up has experienced some sort of defect I think with the ANC. Heard a weird pop while listening to music, followed by static sort of sound. Now that static comes in every now and then and there is a noticeable pressure difference between the two ear ups, most noticeable with ANC at full strength.

    Finally heard back from their support yesterday. They of course first suggested resetting the headphones. I had done this initially when the issue first arose, with no resolution, so I was going to just ignore it. But I figure, what the heck, no harm in trying it again. So I pulled out the headphones and put them on and... The difference in pressure was gone. Played some music through them, everything sounds fine and no static.

    So whatever the problem with the ANC was is gone now. 🤷‍♂️

    RE: the Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless headphones.

    I spoke too soon. Once I actually try to listen to something on them for any length of time, the issue eventually comes back. That is frustrating. I hate intermittent issues, it's often difficult to get the manufacturer to even admit there is a problem if they can't reproduce it immediately.

    Warranty claim submitted.

    I did something to my right foot late last week. Thought it was just a typical soreness, made myself walk through it on Saturday. Sunday brought some serious pain, and yesterday morning it was so bad I could barely stand.

    So I called out yesterday and spent the majority of the day laid up with my foot elevated.

    This morning it's feeling a little better, enough to work. Still trying to avoid putting any undue strain on it.

    Welp, it's been over a month since anyone interacted with this account, and it's a pain to come in and manually post on spoiler days, so after 4+ years of posting every day, I'm going to shut down for a while. Ping me if you know of a way to automate posts with content warnings. Or maybe somebody could help me make a Discord bot instead, since that seems to be where most of the action is lately.

    @WOTCalendar I'm not sure that's really an "official" app. Looks like it's maybe developed by @David. The content warning does seem like an odd omission.

    Of course it's also odd that it's still (!) missing from the stock Mastodon UI.

    Looking at the API to post a status, there doesn't seem to be anything about scheduling a post that would prohibit the use of a content warning. I've scheduled one to post in a few minutes with a content warning, so I'll see if there was a problem with that.
