    392 years ago, the English mathematician and clergyman William Oughtred introduced the multiplication sign ✕ for the first time. via @fermatslibrary.

    Oughtred was the first to use logarithmic scales and sliding by one another to perform direct multiplication and division. He is credited with inventing the slide rule in about 1622. He also introduced the abbreviations "sin" and "cos" for the sine and cosine functions. via @wikipedia

    @Teri_Kanefield @carnage4life FWIW, the Barbie director was on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) with host Ben Mankowitz last night, who was unrolling insights and references between screening a bunch of her favorite movies (e.g., The Red Shoes), and discussing shots and homage and 🤯 (mind blown), the Barbie movie is apparently sooooo DEEEEEP in visual and structural references to classic films that I’ve now just gotta see it!

    Writing a lot for, let's just say, short-form social media, has I genuinely think been good training for writing exhibition labels where I have to cover the most salient points of complex topics clearly and quickly.

    Current challenge: 250 words on both the Emancipation Proclamation and the I Have a Dream speech by a week from Friday.

    @overholt Erm… (a timid, yet friendly hand raised)… there’s a latent ambiguity in “250 words on both” that niggles a bit. You mean “combined” and not “each,” I’d wager. Yet the sentence seems to read correctly either way, eh?

    Also, as I recall there’s been some very interesting and very recent discussion about the Enancipation Proclamation on “black mastodon” that might be invaluable to you. Worth looking into.

    Saw another list of "untranslatables" with the usual suspects (schadenfreude, hygge…). Couple of things:

    —Funny how lists of untranslatable words always supply translations. The words usually just don't have precise, one-word translations—esp if they're culturally very specific

    —Except sometimes they do. Schadenfreude has a little-known English equivalent, epicaricacy, borrowed from Greek & listed in some English dictionaries since the mid-18C
