Sad to hear if this pushes you to be more US-centric. Have loved that you've based from Germany, not just for people, but for législation as well.

@renchap @Mastodon

I'm just hoping this doesn't end up being the first step of many. But time will tell, I suppose. Would hope the German regulators could be reasoned with, but of course simply the fact that this happened must eat some confidence on future.

iju,

@renchap @Mastodon

Just worried that the US-non profit might get pressure from donators from US-legistlation, or that the board of directors start to influence the direction of the development.

Such an easy and cheap way to win hearts when the whole US-led west seems hellbent to accept genocide on the grounds of having orchestrated the whole thing since at least Balfour in 1917.

I think today I’m first time dealing with : My job is perfect for being replaced by AI.

Sure, it will do a much shittier job than I do, but all the problems will be in time manageable by engineering.

Sure, I will pick up new skills and become a director of AI assistants instead. I’ll get paid less and less per line of code though.

But what I do will become a curiosity. Hand-written code will still be needed when the machine does something stupid, but that will be the exception.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@gimulnautti

Perhaps off-topic, but some days ago I had a discussion where the other person stated how for example studying engineering didn't just teach how to calculate (for example) structural tolerances, but also logical thinking, implication being that this was a skill that humanist studies lacked.

Afterwards I started wondering what exactly is "logical thinking" and how does it differ from the more holistic approach taught in the sciences, humanities, and arts?

Melkoinen romahdus.

Sarjikset on yksi lukemisen porttihuume.

Vilkaisin taas twitteriä. Virhe.

½

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@mmin

If you’re on mastodon.social, I would highly recommend that you switch to a different server that protects its people instead of exposing them to a well-known bad actor like Facebook/Meta via Threads.

For alternatives, see: https://fedipact.veganism.social

And remember that Mastodon is not the fediverse. The fediverse is much more than just Mastodon and definitely more so than mastodon.social and Mastodon gGmbH.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@big_louse @aral

Getting large institutional actors on Fediverse is a big part of popularising the platform.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@aral @big_louse

Yeah, I addressed that in my other post:

https://mastodon.social/@iju/112234235808358225

That said, I'd like to say that please don't assume something not directly stated. That's just strawmanning, and it's unbecoming:

https://mas.to/@TechConnectify/112226607795971711

Also: expecting sainthood of mortal people in a complicated world is rather unconstructive. Even as "greater good" -arguments rarely end well.

Question is largerly is TERF-content something that requires defenetration or technological incompatibility.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@big_louse @aral

More like: is internet big because a whitehouse (among other institutional actors) has a webpage? Is email big because whitehouse (among other..) has an adress?

I'd argue yes.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@big_louse @aral

Well, arguably both internet and email became popular when commercial operators were allowed operations in the second half of the 1990s.

At that point Internet had existed half a decade, and email two.

Somehow surprising that a company that's basically (if nonviolently) benefitting from other people's mistakes quote the reason for retirement as was(p) being not in line with their values.

Dare I hazard a guess that German looking people in the current environment might be read as maga-adjacent, and thus the need to distance?

I remember being pretty young and asking my parents—is this it? We go to school every day and then we get a job and go to work every day and this is our lives, forever? Just living each day according to someone else’s schedule, at someone else’s command? This is life?

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

And I just think…a lot of people hold pretty good beliefs in the abstract but it doesn’t occur to them to live as if they were actually true.

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@HeavenlyPossum

Works on larger scale too. Most teachings re: human rights from Nazi Germany were only implemented from 1970s onward, as the earlier generations though the problem with Hitler wasn't the absolute evil (as they explained to the kids) but that he went too far.

Stuff like lobotomies, human tests with permanent drop on quality of life with "cognitively different", separating kids from parents to homogenise society etc. got gradually made illegal at that point.
