I remember being pretty young and asking my parents—is this it? We go to school every day and then we get a job and go to work every day and this is our lives, forever? Just living each day according to someone else’s schedule, at someone else’s command? This is life?

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

And I just think…a lot of people hold pretty good beliefs in the abstract but it doesn’t occur to them to live as if they were actually true.

Works on larger scale too. Most teachings re: human rights from Nazi Germany were only implemented from 1970s onward, as the earlier generations though the problem with Hitler wasn't the absolute evil (as they explained to the kids) but that he went too far.

Stuff like lobotomies, human tests with permanent drop on quality of life with "cognitively different", separating kids from parents to homogenise society etc. got gradually made illegal at that point.

Reminds me of a reddit-post where a smallish game developer noted that while their game sold a fraction on linux than it did on windows, 95% of bug reports came from linux and almost all were applicable to improving the windows-version. Better yet: the bug reports were detailed and easy to replicate.

So they upkept the linux-version not for the sales, but for the feedback that allowed the improvement on Windows -- which in turn led to sales.

Mastodon is my primary social media, and there’s a lot I dig about it. But if there’s one thing I’d like to change, it’s the way people say THIS IS A CRISIS RIGHT NOW AND IT’S THE MAIN CRISIS AND IF YOU DON’T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW YOU’RE BAD AND WRONG!!!

Know what? It’s your crisis. Do what you think is right. Stop judging others for having different priorities, political or otherwise. Quit putting everything in black and white, absolute terms. It’s exhausting, and nobody can live like that.

Just to air my related pet peeve: US people think they're the world to the extend they don't even bother to put their location on their profile. And if there's something that can be read as location, it's a place that's so "other" that they don't even think it's an even theoretical alternative.

Just the day before yesterday I made an error by thinking someone was Syrian..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "tetra packs" (eg. those small juice boxes; tomato pyree) have aluminium, but those one litre cartons (eg. for milk, juice) do not.

Both manufactured by Tetra, though.

I just told my kid there's only one toy that I still really wish I'd had as a kid.

And, granted, printing a random stranger’s recreation of Han Solo's DL-44 blaster at my office would take over 38 hours.

But, if you account for sleeping and eating, it's basically just a day.

Terminologiaa: silmäluomen poimu, engl. epicanthic fold, on suomeksi yleiskieliseltä nimeltään näemmä rasistiselta kuulostava mongoli(n)poimu. Lääketieteen sanasto suosittaa termiä epikantus, mutta kielitoimiston sanakirja ei taas edes tunne kyseistä termiä.

Onkohan paljon muitakin tällaisia rasistisia termejä, jotka menevät tutkan alle, koska ovat verraten harvinaisia?

Lisään että Wikipedian konservatiivinen linjaus on yleensä hyvä, koska wiki elää vahvasti zeitgeistissä ja ilman vahvaa "paperilähteet ennen webnisivua" -linjaa koko projekti olisi täysin hyödytön. Valtaosa väestöstä kun ei osaa arvioida eri lähteiden arvoja, ja konservatiivisuus mahdollistaa ns. kerman nousun pintaan.

Hadn't heard the term before, so used an image creator to give me a sample image.

This was the only one that didn't have gravel.

Is it anything close?

(Had to try several services, as most said the images were against creation parametres. I do admit hoping that one would have produced a glacial erratic in a suggestive bikini.)

Itse puhun mieluusti paperiseinistä: kyse ei ole pelkästään siitä mitä muut meistä tietävät, vaan mitä me kollektiivisesti teeskentelemme toisistamme tietävämme. Facebook on ongelmallinen "osoitekirjana" nimenomaan koska siirtymä opiskeluverkostosta kaveriverkostoksi ja edelleen sukulais- ja työympäristöverkostoksi on tehnyt perinteisen käytön täysin mahdottomaksi.

Teet oletuksen että vaaleissa puolueet kertovat arvonsa rehellisesti (ja sitoutuvat niihin) SEKÄ että kaikilla puolueilla on samanlaiset mahdollisuudet kertoa arvoistaan ja niiden seurauksista.

Nykuinen tilanne syntyi kun Marin kertoi millainen Kok+ps -pohjainen hallitus olisi,ja sekä Purra että Orpo kielsivät kuvauksen panetteluna. Seuraavasti hämmästeltiin mediassa Marinin ylimielisyyttä.

Vaalit ei riitä, pitää olla myös mahdollisuus uusia vaalit.

Sikäli kun muotoilin asiani epäselvästi, niin kirjoitan toisin:

  • vaalit neljän vuoden välein eivät yksin riitä toteuttamaan "valta kuuluu kansalle".
  • kansa osoittaa kollektiivisen tahtonsa vaalien ohella lakoilla
  • enemmistöhallitusta on lähes mahdoton hajoittaa epäluottamuslauseella sen kerran tultua muodostetuksi.
  • hallituksen kaato tai uusien vaalien vaatiminen lakoilla on demokratiaa

I'm a bit surprised how many times that article calls Mozilla "company" and compares it to Google and Apple.

True, the subsidiary of Mozilla Foundation that develops Firefox is a corporation, but the word "company" (and I just checked few dictionaries) refers to organisations that try to create money, not just stay afloat.

The-end-result is that the writer misses the Foundation's goal for healthy internet as a creator of useful tools, and instead assigns more capitalist motives.

About three years ago we replaced our copper kitchen sink with something else.

I put the copper sink in the basement because I wanted to sell it for scrap.

And then I never did, but recently a friend of mine started doing metal casting, and then posted "Does anyone have scrap copper they don't want?"

So I told him I'd sell it to him at half the going scrap value amount.

And yesterday he picked up the sink, and then melted it into copper ingots. Cool!

Such cruelty and evil.

Not just destroying an ambulance (and thus killing everybody the ambulance could have saved), but the understanding that Red Cross+Crescent has driven ambulances for hundred+ years and it has generally been understood that the more casualties don't end up dead, the better for everyone.

I can't fathom this evil. And still so many who've I thought as decent defend these actions as right and just, silencing those who ask for humanity.

Tämä lienee taloja joista oli joko annettu purkumääräys tai joissa tontinomistaja odotti tulipaloa.

Kuvassa näkyvät rappionmerkit eivät liity köyhyyteen, vaan työn toivottomuuteen.

Kontekstiksi on sanottava että Helsingissä oli tuohon aikaan asuntopula. Ihmisiä asui maakuopissa, pommisuojissa, ja voimassa oli laki joka pakotti tarjoamaan nukkumapaikkoja alivuokralaisille.

Myös lämmitysmateriaalista oli pula. Huoneiden lämpötila oli muistaakseni 15 astetta, mikä aiheutti hometta.
